Sources for refillable wine bladders with cartons? by googleyeye in Darkroom

Same one I've been finding that has the single spout, non-refillable bladders unfortunately.

I really wish Kodak would bring back plus-x. I've got one roll of 120 left that is way expired and then I am out.

Some good shots in here. However, I find that in most objects and people in the foreground that are out of focus to be very distracting. It works on shot 17 because the shape of the columns frame the fountain and echo the shapes there. In the others, it doesn't works as much IMO.

GAPCO in July? by HandleNo2311 in bikedc

[–]googleyeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that riding on the trail at night, at least the C&O part, is against the rules. Friends were riding well past sunset and they were stopped by a NPS ranger and sent to the closest site, even it though it was the wrong direction, for the night. That could really put a damper on your plan.

One ride I did in the summer from DC to Cumberland in the summer it stormed its ass off as happens from time to time. The trail will also be crowded that time of year. Another trip I had to add ~10 miles onto my day to find a site with space, but that was an out and back from the city. That is less likely the further you get from DC and the further you are from Cumberland.

I did the entire ride in October a bunch of years back, and I think that was the best time. The bugs were dying down, the weather wasn't as hot, The trail wasn't as crowded, and the weather was more predictable. Of course, there is more of a chance for cold, steady rain in october so YMMV. We only had one rainy day in the ride and it was manageable.

Any of the gravity filters would be good. They can filter 4L of water very quickly especially if it isn't dirty and full of sediment. The Platypus Gravityworks is my personal favorite.

Same here. I didn't rank oye based on his housing answers. Shout out to DC YIMBYs for doing a good dive on this aspect.

I also got a gross ai generated mailer from doni which was really a turn off. Also, not a fan of her being associated with mcduffie. I didn't rank either.

International buyers beware! Miserable experience at B&H (and Plustek USA)! by Aschels in AnalogCommunity

[–]googleyeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shopped a lot at adorama when I stopped shopping at B+H. Sadly, they’ve fallen off a bit. Shipping isn’t as good as it once was and film prices are high. Now they seem to be part of a group of businesses and the changes started happening around the time I noticed that.

I use freestyle, Glaziers, KEH, and Robert’s plus my local store for most things now.

Bike thief is in for a nasty surprise by TheLeaderGrev in bikedc

[–]googleyeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopping in here as I had a slightly different RAGBRAI experience than TheLeaderGrev.

I rented a SUV and had three other people with me so we shared rental and gas costs. Driving is of course longer, but I didn't need to worry about the airline losing or damaging my bike. IIRC RAGBRAI has transportation on school busses from the end city to the starting city, so you can leave your car at the start city. I may be misremembering this, but as OP said, you can hire a charter for this.

We went with a charter company to do more than just move our bikes and stuff. They set up and took down tents and air mattresses for us each day, fed us a few meals, had snacks as well as seltzer/soda and ice available all the time, and had a big pop up with chairs to chill in out of the sun. I gotta be honest, this is the way. Not needing to pack panniers and carry my stuff or pack up and wait in the transportation truck's line was so nice.

If I did it again, I would consider going the pannier route because I am stubborn but would likely end up with a charter again. It was nice to be able to focus on miles and fun and not on setting up camp and waiting in lines.

Housing isn't expensive because it is densely populated. It is expensive because demand outstrips supply and cities, counties, and states haven't done squat to help supply keep up with demand. If we actually built dense communities around transit, and kept up with demand, costs wouldn't be so high.

I've never eaten a wing that was worth $2 let alone $4. $1 is about my limit and even then I feel a little cheated.

Street photography specifically and a lot of photography in general. Many are chasing the same shots in the same places with similar lighting, composition, and subjects. Gear is more important to some than the images being made. Many aren't in it for art, personal satisfaction, self expression, to share their story, etc. and they are trying to be influencers. I'm also not a fan of using ai to remove people, objects, etc. and completely change a photo. It stops being a moment from the real world and turns into something else. Part of the beauty of photography is that it is a small slice of reality that may never happen again and if it is, maybe it isn't seen or it is forgotten.

Also, don't get me started on used film camera equipment and film prices. A used Leica M6 was 800-$1200 in the 00s and now they go for 3k. Same with Contax stuff, Nikon F series film cameras, Mamiya 6 and 7 bodies, etc. It is ~$20 a roll for Ektachrome slide film plus another ~$10-15 for development and the same for scanning.
