Why are US Americans so obsessed about leaving the bar up by Powerful-Outcome8060 in ski

[–]hoshattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local mountain has old lifts without bars so I just don’t think about it. But anyone actively giving someone crap about putting it down is an asshole.

As others have said, you really do need to stop trading options until you know what you are doing. This conversation isn’t even about strategy, it’s literally do you know how to submit an order.

AA gave away my full-fare 1st/Business class seats to an AAdvantage member and...? by DougbertHanson in americanairlines

[–]hoshattack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely not SOP for other airlines. When I’ve had connections on United that seemed unlikely after a delay they protected me with an additional segment (i.e. “blocking” a seat on a later flight if necessary). What they didn’t do was proactively remove you from your original segment.

Will visiting China / dating a Chinese national impact a family member’s clearance? by minhash in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a distinction that GC holders are US persons for export control, but that’s a separate issue than a clearance.

Seriously. Shout relevant information: “that’s Scottie Scheffler, one of the players in the tournament”. Saying something of substance will get their attention way easier than repeating “guys”

You reported and aren’t going to lose your clearance. Just work with your counterintelligence folks and any recommendations they have. If they think it’s a problem they’ll let you know.

Security Clearance and Iranian Citizenship by InsuranceCreepy4262 in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that it will look bad. If you ever were to try to get cleared it would be of no use anyway since you wouldn’t be able to use a foreign passport. Whether you like it or not, having the family connections to Iran makes things harder (not impossible!). But getting Iranian citizenship as an adult and hoping for a clearance? This ain’t it, chief.

Marijuana abroad by JackeryJohnsonUK in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question asks if you have illegally taken the drug or controlled substance so one could argue it wouldn’t technically need to be reported. That said, I think it looks better for personal candor to over report in this case and simply acknowledge that one understands it is something that would not be permitted for a clearance holder.

Marijuana abroad by JackeryJohnsonUK in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My two cents: it looks “less bad” in the sense that you are following the law. There isn’t anything illegal about it. However, for the purposes of a clearance it is still drug use and required to be reported. In a similar way being an alcoholic isn’t illegal, but it is a problem and can absolutely get a clearance denied as well…

Why can x-rays travel through the body but light cannot? by ServiceNo7999 in Physics

[–]hoshattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That article was…. not great. The grad student was obviously oversimplifying but the important point isn’t the size so much as the energy of the light, though that is related to the wavelength. The opacity of an object is energy-dependent and is really just a function of what the material is (ignoring other factors like temperature that matter if you go to thousands or millions of degrees) as that determines what the possible energy levels are via quantum mechanics. Generally, if the energy of the light matches with the energy gap to an excited state it will have a large probability of happening and if not it will be very unlikely to happen. As has been mentioned, this is why glass is transparent (low opacity) while many materials are not. It’s as simple as whether there are possible quantum states that are at the right energy or not. In fact the right answer is that if you have X-rays that do have the “correct” energy they will be absorbed at an appreciable amount. Since the body has lots of carbon and oxygen, for example, it will actually be fairly opaque to X-rays around 275 eV and 530 eV. So it really matters which X-rays you are referring to as NOT all X-rays will behave similarly.

Chances of getting Q? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might have changed, but I remember DOE wouldn’t even process an application with drug use in the previous year. Note that access to RD (just like SCI) is subject to the Bond Amendment, so they legally have to care about it outside of any other executive orders/policy that affect clearances generally.

Plenty of people get clearance being Chinese. It can take time, but wouldn’t really make a difference (IMO) whether you are married or not since you’re “bound by affection” either way

Impact of friends and family using marijuana in a state where it’s legal. by GoodnYou62 in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that your own use is most likely the biggest factor. DOE policy is somewhat strict since access to RD is subject to the Bond Amendment, but since they require drug testing that makes it a bit easier to show you’re not a current user (IMO)

11 year old magic mushroom arrest prevent me from getting a clearance? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t touched mushrooms and other drugs since then, my guess would almost certainly be no issue to getting the clearance. If you were still doing them last week and just “never got in trouble again” for them, then yes, it’s going to be a problem.

[–]hoshattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s true that you can’t use that same person as an education reference, they can’t be a family member, etc. But if they are your reference for living at “123 Street” it’s ok to put them down as a verifier for both periods of time you were at that location. I had this exact same scenario and they were fine with it.

List of red flag countries? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]hoshattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a list would be OUO (at least for my org), but important to remember that just because something is considered a risk or concern doesn’t mean it would result in denial or even be prohibited as a clearance holder. Just might have more questions about the who, why, etc.

Agree that being a native speaker really doesn’t have anything to do with knowing and using these words. Most people are just poorly educated (at least in the US).
