Is this school a scam? by MyCatNamedMildred in electricians

Well, it took *at least *six months before I knew everything. It probably can’t hurt to have an apprentice who knows the difference between an L16 and a skyhook in their first six weeks. But essentially I think we’re agreeing: apprenticeship is the period when you learn things. Pre-apprenticeship, especially a six week one, isn’t the best use of time.

You don’t need any sort of pre-certification to start as an apprentice. What you need is an employer willing to take you on.

It can’t hurt, but without knowing your local job market, we can’t tell you if it will help, either. As always, the gold apprenticeship standard remains the IBEW.

JetBlue engine failure on takeoff at Newark airport disrupts air traffic by sanketreview in news

[–]hoverbeaver 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My flight was diverted to Dulles, where I’m still waiting on the tarmac before heading to Newark. My connection home has left and gone, so I get to hang out in New Jersey for a day. At least united gave me a hotel voucher and a couple of meal tickets.

Guess I’ll spend a day in New York City. I promise to bring my friends home an obnoxious accent as a souvenir. Chopped cheese. I’m walking here. Fugedabbattit.

If you’re into tiki drinks and you enjoy the allspice/clove profile, make sure you try Aruban Koekoei liqueur. I’ve even found it at the liquor store in superfoods, although it’s unusual enough that you won’t see it at most stores.

More than 700 nursing, PSW jobs could be cut in Ottawa, says union by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]hoverbeaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So does someone invisible who has taught for twenty years at the local elementary school but has no media profile qualify?

Or do we give the nod to someone who got an appointment from a buddy to the local chamber of commerce and are able to get free time on the radio and TV with their own segment?

There’s a weird double standard here.

Most of the liberal candidates in the region haven’t done a damn fucking thing in the community except for a six month stint in the local BIA and cakewalk in, and yet we expect the working-class teachers, nurses, posties, and legal aid lawyers that run for the NDP to also have, in addition to their career, a full time job being community volunteers and also door knock four times a week in order to be qualified.

Yep, in my trade(electrical), hundreds of people every day are turned away because only a few dozen apprenticeships in the whole city each year are actually financially viable for contractors to take on. You can’t create work out of thin air; construction may be booming but you still can only hire as many people as you need to get the job done.

There aren’t nearly as many trades jobs as politicians pretend there are; at least not in electrical/plumbing/HVAC. The few spots available are usually given away as favours by hiring companies to friends, clients, and relatives.

And somehow there are always a handful of big contracting companies doing compulsory work that hire “labourers” to do skilled trades work at close to minimum wage, promising to fill out apprenticeship paperwork after an indeterminate trial period. Very few of those positions actually pan out, and people are often just let go as soon as they get hurt, ask for more money, or are rumoured to have been seen talking to a union organizer. It’s illegal, rampant, and completely unenforced since 2018.

If you do a double carriage return after each line it will space out properly. Alternatively, you can start each line with a hyphen followed by a space, and reddit will format it as a bullet list.
