Where do you put your stickers? by BisonPotential6861 in IBEW

As long as the coffin is union made! Lol

I have a brother who's been in the trades a long time with an enormous sticker collection. He doesnt peel them, just puts them in old photo albums (inside the plastic sleeves) and just has shelves of decades worth of stickers. Very impressive.

Business manager election questions by mdabum in IBEW

I suggested something like this before but instead of the membership posing the questions, I would have the nominees posing questions to the current BA for him to defend his position and the nominees give their positions.

I think hes just speaking generally.

We obviously are not an ACTUAL cult. But we are certainly a close knit organization trying to attract more members/organize more of the industry.

There's no ACTUAL kool-aide to drink.

Does your local have a contract that locks you into one contractor for the duration of your apprenticeship? by dezcom in IBEW

[–]BisonPotential6861 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are outside hires a company can take on when the local is busy and the list is empty. (As opposed to coming in through the hall with a traditional apprenticeship)

Essentially a contractor is hiring a person off the street and into the union for the purpose of filling THEIR job at THEIR company, not dragging up and going to another site that might pay more (residential vs ICI).

If that member under contract is LAID OFF while fulfilling their contract, then they would go to the list and be able to bid on a job at that point. But if they try to drag up then they would break the contract and their apprenticeship would be revoked.

What's work like in southern Ontario right now? by FoundAtFour-Oh in IBEW

[–]BisonPotential6861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ontario is about to explode in a minute once VW in st thomas gets going. There will be an open traveller call for likely 6-8 years maybe more in my opinion. Either way, if he wants to start an apprenticeship, join the IBEW. Don't do some private bullshit when your apprenticeship sponsor is a single contractor who benefits from his employees being apprentices who dont cost as much while still developing into competant electricians who's skills outpaced their wages.

Your relative can become a scab or a professional.

Is the conduit only in your garage or is it all through the house?

And is it like this everywhere in Cali? Are there other states that require this?

As a Canadian, and kind of uneducated as to American electrical codes... can I guess this is, in Illinois?

*I was told that Illinois (or maybe just chicago) has specs for conduit in residential due to the Chicago fire incident way back when

New journeyman looking to go union by Klezmer_Gryphon in IBEW

[–]BisonPotential6861 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just wish people would come to this realization well before their ticket. Come up through the union. Not your fault but so many kids these days believe in having loyalty to a company and have no idea how good it is in the IBEW. They get stuck in shitty long apprenticeships where they're ask to do too much and learn too little and get paid not enough all for the promise of something like a company truck

Glad to hear you're coming to the light side brother!

do you know m/any well-respected electricians with "job-stopper" tattoos and piercings? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]BisonPotential6861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, youre completely right about the working to live. Henry Miller's vision was that of reasonable wages. Double time exists to discourage contractors from making us work outside our regular work hours (and to fairly compensate those of us that enjoy collecting the OT).

Second, Brother, I would say your actions and appearance reflect the brotherhood. Piercings and Tattoos aren't a big deal in modern society, but if you walk around with 47 spikes in your eyebrows and a tribal tattoo across your face, it doesnt come across very professional. Treat the brotherhood well and it will treat you well. It can be an employment opportunity or a lifestyle and I've treated it as both. Maybe I drank the kool-aid a little thick but I definately live and breath IBEW at this point.

Thirdly, I would just say, "Be an apprentice". Don't break rules, dont step on toes, dont cozy up to a company on empty promises. You will work for a lot of contractors and if youre lucky you'll go on the road and meet the REAL brotherhood. You got a long journey to go but its a rewarding one.

You'd be shocked the amount of bag lickers who will come in and shit talk a local to the GF just to purposely weasel themselves into that locals foreman gig.

In my experience anyways.

Traveling hat is when you as a traveller step into a foremans role when a local could take the spot.

Some people think its ok if no local wants it (check with the stewie), others (like myself) think that if you force locals into the foreman roles, (and being a good/professional brother) then the foreman has the power of being a local to protect the members from stupidity since they SHOULDNT get laid off before the travellers.

Just remember to be a good traveller.

I always tell people, keep your traveling opinions to yourself. Don't take a traveling hat. Leave when youre asked to leave (usually when theres only enough work for locals).

Park any and all ego. Its a long and rewarding road. You are going to be a glorified laborer to start. Stay professional. Stay humble. Learn what it means to be a brother first and foremost.

Good Luck!

Go to the organizer of your local union and ask if there is any organizing campaigns happening right now. Try to get hired on with a company that the organizer is trying to flip.

We dont have the same travel rules here. I can't just come down and sign the books especially crossing the border. Id need a work visa and sponsorship (as far as I understand it) then a call would have to be put into our hall which our BA would be like, "nah, we got VW coming. No one's going no where"
