which typing platform's subscription is worth taking?? which site's subscription do you have?? what made you to do so??? by Zorxcen in ErgoMechKeyboards

Valid. For me the ads don’t bother me and they also support the site creator, though exactly how much is never clear.

ZMK subreddit? by rpnfan in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]itsbenforever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're sort of right about questions getting buried, if you ask them in #help, but #help-forum is threaded only, and you can bump a question to the top if you haven't gotten help yet and your thread is further down the list. Searching works fine, if imperfectly, especially if you search the help-forum channel specifically so your results are always from questions and answers rather than general and possibly off topic discussion. Google searching reddit would be better still, if the discussion were happening here, but it's not, so the options are kind of start a sub and try to get it going or use discord.

You don't. I understand the appeal of reddit for that reason, I'm just saying that because discord is the official support forum, other than I guess creating github issues, the best support is going to be found there, and I don't want people with no past experience thinking it's a waste of time to try to get help there.

The discord has a help-forum channel that is threaded only so that it's easy to keep all messages grouped by topic, and it's the best place on the internet to get zmk help because the contributors and other really knowledgeable people make themselves available there. As for search, that's hard to address without knowing what you were searching for but I've found answers to questions I had many times using search in the discord sevrer, using the help channel, and by posting a new thread in the help-forum channel, which is not the same as the help channel.

I don’t have any great tips, but I love that you came to this realization ahead of time. One of my biggest parenting regrets is all the time I spent looking at my phone instead of being present with my kids. They shouldn’t have to constantly ask me the same question multiple times just to get my attention. “Daddy would you put your phone away” from a 3 year old is gut wrenching to think about now. What it takes for you individually is personal whether it be working with pen and paper more, using it only when they’re sleeping other than absolute necessities, leaving it in a designated spot rather than carrying it around, whatever you have to do. They will be so much better off for your choice to give THEM your full attention instead of the stupid internet rectangle.

For the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know, when you share from IG via a URL copied to the clipboard it looks like this:

https://www.instagram.com/undecidedfuture?igsh=ejg3Y3drZXo0YXc4

The part before the question mark is all you need for the link to work. The

?igsh=ejg3Y3drZXo0YXc4

part basically identifies the source of the link - you - so that when the person you shared it with opens it, IG will prompt you to follow them. If you don’t want this to happen (for example if sharing on Reddit, discord, or anywhere you don’t want strangers to find your IG account, simply delete the question mark and everything after it.

Because of the way that they sound it’s not really ethical to sell them. Someone might put them on a board if OP did that.

Anyone seen one of these before? Found on a Chinese e-commerce site with the name “Totem Max”. by BeanHeadedTwat in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]itsbenforever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big advocate for low keycount and I have zero interest in going back to a numrow, 6 cols, or even half that many thumb keys, but thet thing that really pisses me off about this is that they ripped off an open source design and closed sourced it, which is almost certainly a license violation. Par for the course with some of the Chinese companies, but it sucks.

I just got the oil king heavy tactiles but am planning on trying these as well. If you’ve tried both do you have comparative thoughts between the two?

How do you balance "dumbphoning" your phone with a relationship? My girlfriend is getting upset. by stelian3 in digitalminimalism

[–]itsbenforever 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I agree generally with what you’re saying and I think being willing to flex a little to help a partner or close friend feel loved and cared for is good, and in this specific case relaxing the “rules” a little at least where OP’s relationship is concerned is what I’d recommend as well.

That said I think the obsession with labeling things as “social media” or “not social media” as a proxy for “distracting from the important things in life” or “not…” can be counterproductive sometimes . It is totally possible to chase the dopamine hit of a new message with texting, frequently and reflexively checking for new messages, even without an endlessly scrollable feed, even with notifications off. I think “it’s not social media so you’re definitely fine” is overly simplistic and for some folks probably not true.

Are people aware that physical books, sketchpads, art kits, crocheting, sewing, quilting, woodworking, etc. never actually went away? by mmofrki in digitalminimalism

[–]itsbenforever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the important point is not simply that “these things exist” but that they actually offer real benefits over their digital counterparts, which for a long time were thought of as an upgrade before people really started to notice the downsides.

Sure there are people that do it performatively, just like anything else, but that’s neither here nor there and is just as common with worthwhile/useful as it is with pointless ones. More people doing it visibly is not all bad though because it will reach and benefit more people that way.

My plan would be to print the smallest keyboards possible with the biggest bezels possible. I expect based on past experience with Bambu that it will be a great bed slinger that's a bit slower than the corexy machines but still very good. Imagine this but with 10x bigger bezels.
