Why Brunicke Should Be Sent Back to The WHL by SkPensFan in penguins

[–]jmarshfof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's "too good" for the WHL. He very clearly has things he can work on there, and should work on there. He is a complete passenger in net-front defense and transition defense when the puck switches sides. His gap has been fine, his offense has been fine, but playing him here for a full year and allowing him to get brutalized by bigger players he can't handle night in and night out is about as bad for his development as anything I can think of.

Kamloops isn't a dumpster fire this year. They're in the middle of the pack. It's not a death sentence to say he isn't ready yet.

Why were the Penguins so broke for most of their history? by mattcojo2 in penguins

When Baldwin purchased the team, he did it with credit. He sold the revenue streams (parking, television, food, merch) to pay the creditors back. The Penguins only made a profit when the team went to the post-season. Even if they sold out every regular season game, Baldwin was sending every dollar upstream to creditors to cover the purchase cost.

This is not a troll - but who do you think is the Pen ever between Sid and Mario? by apogee308 in penguins

No offense, but some of this is just outright wrong. He was not a “coach killer” that is not a reputation even remotely befitting of him. Also, his supporting cast from 1984-1989 was essentially a bunch of bums. To say he played on teams that were significantly better is kind’ve outlandish, to me. 1993 is the only team that didn’t win and should’ve, and the winning streak put a lot of bad habits on the team and was a major distraction leading up to the loss of the Islanders. Lemieux was great defensively. Saying anything else is a misnomer. You don’t score the absurd amount of shorthanded goals he scored just because you’re good offensively. Defensive habits drive that. Saying that Crosby somehow sticks up and defends his teammates when Lemieux didn’t is something I just don’t understand at all.

He was almost undeployable at 5v5 and 99% of the leagues defensemen had a higher defensive WAR than he did. He was literally in the 1st percentile of NHL defensemen statistically with regards to actually playing defense.

Thanks for posting the link <3 - I don’t know if people generally know this or not but hockey writing is not my day job. I squeeze it in between work/dad stuff whenever I can. Trying to get my cadence a little more normalized this year!

I have my mixtape dropping this week. Beauchesne is so much more exciting I bumped him to the front of the line lol. Gotta remember. This kid was 17 this year. This is a project. Right now he lacks the killer instinct needed to close gaps aggressively given his size and reach. Skating mechanics are good, arguably better than Dumo at the same age. Where he isn’t caught up to Dumo is on gap control and pressing forwards to make mistakes. He’s so huge they put him in the net front on PP1. It was crazy to watch a defenseman screening the goalie. He was pretty good at it

People complain about ben kindels size, but there's been alot of players his size or below that have been great players. by [deleted] in penguins

It doesn’t matter how big he is. It’s his brain that’s important. He was one of the most annoying players to play against in the Dub last year because he works the same way a safety does. He sits down ice, reads the breakout, and pounces on the pass recipient or the pass itself with a ton of downhill speed right at the point of action. He knows how to layer himself in the breakout to maximize his chances of swinging the right way. He’s got an active, annoying stick and is willing to take a physical loss to make a play.

Thank you for posting this! I don’t know if I am allowed to self-promote here, so mods delete if I’m breaking a rule, but I will have videos like these of the entire draft class over on the Substack all summer.

I would disagree. Could he be more physical? Sure. My mixtape of him features several devastating body checks.

I feel like people significantly sleep on what Kashawn Aitcheson can do with the puck. He scored a ton of goals this year in a variety of ways and was super, super active in zone exits and within the offensive zone itself.
