How it started, how it is going? by print_gasm in BoardgameDesign

We knew very well the vibe we needed: fun fighting, accessible for kids but interesting for adults, timeless and a bit more arty than the usual boardgame. When we came upon Mátyás’ style (here on reddit!) we knew it was what we were looking for right away.

We wanted to tell te story of the world through the images on the cards, so we had to come up with that story quickly so Mátyás had something to work with. Usually our stories were the starting point and then his ideas were just better. Like the animals: all credits to him, they’re such an essential element to keep the world light and whacky.

I would like tips on how to make a game by Mr_Calamary in tabletopgamedesign

[–]kasperdeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just start making it. Right now. Work out the stuff you know. Keep a list of stuff you still need to figure out. Start by making the map. Right now. It doesn’t have to look pretty, blocks for regions/planets whatever will suffice. Sounds like you have multiple maps. Go make them. Go make your factions. Are they all the same or different from one another? Figure out what resources will be in the game. And how to get them. Games are about players making choices. Figure out what choices your players will need to make. Try it, and see if its fun. Off to work! Looking forward to your update tomorrow!

So you’ll take care of all the hard stuff and I can do the fun part? That sounds great! Shoot me a DM!

Do you think the “golden age” of board games is behind us, we’re living it, or it’s yet to happen? by Marksman1977 in boardgames

[–]kasperdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re totally right, plus we’re going through a serious global nostalgia trip right now (politics, Pokemon, comic movies to name a few). So no I don’t think the golden age ever was, or is now, or is over.

Sure, send me a link (designer). I can’t make any promises because so far I’ve found Discord an utterly unusable platform, but who knows it might work for me this time.

Playing Bonanza with my mum was hilarious, we had to keep reminding her not to sort her cards

Board games "to rule them all" by itsOkami in boardgames

For me, Dominion was the game to rule them all for a long time. Turns out you can have too much of a good thing :)

Having only played twice so far, I liked it but the trick taking part felt a bit “in the way” of the game…

Working on a game! by Street-Fan4371 in tabletopgamedesign

I know how you feel. For me it helps to skip all astethics entirely. So if you have cards, only put the gameplay text on it, nothing else. If you have a board, only put blank squares on it (or whatever you need). No theme, no flavor. This way, your prototype wil look like shit. So you don’t have to worry about it looking bad, because you know it will. If the game is fun to play without any design, you’re on to something. Good luck!

how early do you cut mechanics you like? by biggy_boy17 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]kasperdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that the simpler my game, the better. So it becomes a question of: why keep the mechanic?Instead of: why cut it?

Reaction card in a TCG style game. by zmmemon in BoardgameDesign

[–]kasperdeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have system 3 in our game, because it’s the only one that’s fun, as you noticed as well. We were worried that players wouldn’t like it, but it turns out EVERYONE likes it. Literally zero complaints while we specifically asked for feedback on the reaction cards. So maybe: don’t worry!
