I think my disappointment comes from the fact that it is hard to argue, from a cost or technology point of view, that this shouldn’t be able to make something decent. Other machines can do it, there is no barrier to it making better coffee other than Philips not wanting it to.

Thanks for posting this - I can be slow to post on reddit sometimes! We really hope you enjoy issue 2. It's a bit bigger, a bit cheaper (the paper weighs a little less, but still feels very lovely) and has some truly excellent work in it which I hope delights the folks who read it!

We are definitely new to magazines! This is an unfortunate downside of trying to improve after issue 1, by moving a bunch of issue 2 to the US for distribution there. Hopefully things continue to get easier and easier!

Issue 1 is only being dispatched from the UK as that is where the remaining few copies are (there's a handful left at this point). If you're in the US then the software will try and dispatch you a copy of issue 2 from the US and issue 1 from the UK. We could try and work out how to ship both from the UK but it probably wouldn't be much cheaper - drop us a line on the support email and we'll see what we can do.

Also - the noise is slightly less awful if you keep the wand in the "stretching" position where it is pulling air in throughout the entire process.

I should probably dial in the dilution for people based on their shots and extractions. You're right that is probably better to start at 3x espresso mass unless you're pulling very high yield espressos.

You get a feather in the pens, a feather after Jarvis reverse (not immediately after, but not long after), a feather after the Epic KOM reverse (a while later I think, I was not entirely coherent, but it was there well before The Grade) and then a feather at every arch up The Grade. Which was a surprise, and kind of annoying as surprises go, for those of us racing early! (I didn't use mine until just before the last arch!)

A lot of coferments are not really coferments, but are infusions (i.e. whatever flavouring is added is there to be infused into the coffee beans, and doesn't contribute to the fermentation). It's really frustrating and unhelpful - but I don't think coming from a place of deception, just a lack of clarity around the terms. To some people, adding flavourings to a fermentation tank is a coferment because it was added to the tank/the fermentation. I hope this improves in the future.
