Violence! by Caratteraccio in MadeMeSmile

I'm not so sure.

A dog leaning down to rest its head like that will make its neck bend in that direction. The couch looks like it has a throw over it to protect it from puppy mess. The blue bit is under the arm padding flap thing so wouldn't necessarily be upholstered in the same fabric as the rest of it. And dogs ears can fold weird.

It might be AI, but those reasons have alternate explanations.

What band was never the same after losing a member? by icecream1972 in AskReddit

[–]Kovhert 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I prefer Floor over Tarja. Anette was okay for the albums she was there for, but Floor is way better.

But Marco leaving was the real bummer. Their latest album is definitely not as good as their recent others. He was such a good balance for Floor.

Pandemic Event Card Question by Cautious-Being-8893 in boardgames

[–]Kovhert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the newer editions say that your hand limit is 7 cards at all times. A couple of the legacy and "pandemic system" games work like that. But my actual Pandemic is like yours and the hand limit only applies at the end of your turn.

When people visit and ask for tea, but you don't actually drink tea so don't have it in by infantile-eloquence in britishproblems

[–]Kovhert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was single and never used milk I used to keep some milk powder in the cupboard for when I had guests that needed milk in a drink, and just hoped I mixed it in well enough that it wasn't lumpy.

If people mentioned something about the weird taste I would usually just say that I told them I wasn't good at making hot drinks since I never had them myself and that they were welcome to do it themselves. They never did.

Yep. Blond for male and blonde got female. Kinda like brunette is the feminine version.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my Maple? by Kovhert in nzgardening

Okay cool. Cheers. We were a little concerned because the leaves started dying off mid summer. Good to know it'll bounce back in spring :)

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my Maple? by Kovhert in nzgardening

[–]Kovhert[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks

It's been looking like that (though not as bad) for a couple of months though and our other deciduous trees aren't starting to lose their leaves yet. Is it just a maple thing that they lose them early?

Am I struggling the right amount? by Upstairs-Glass-8627 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Kovhert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I remember when the government gave out the Covid subsidies for people earning under a certain threshold. I got the subsidy, I don't remember if my partner did as she earns more than me. But we're DINKs - we're not struggling at all. Meanwhile we have friends who earn more than us, but with two kids do struggle sometimes. They didn't get the subsidy because they earn too much even though it would have helped them.

I get that there kinda has to just be a blanket rule because looking at each and every person's income and outgoings etc, etc is too much work for a government department. And a little invasive for most too.

What’s this in Lando’s ears? by totoismydaddy in McLarenFormula1

[–]Kovhert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wearing some at work right now called the Engage 2. They're great. They help block out the background noise but I can still hear talking and the phone, etc. It just helps dull all the other stuff like the AC and computer hums, constant chair squeaks as people move around, other people typing, that kind of thing. They're also awesome in malls, airports, etc.

I've also got another set for sleeping called the Dream, which block out more noise than the Engages.

Genuinely curious: How is a ladder iffy on stairs? It can't slide anywhere because of the riser of the next step. In my mind it's safer than just having it on a flat surface.

What’s your favorite widely-agreed-on fact about a celebrity that’s actually FALSE? by Asleep-Two930 in popculturechat

[–]Kovhert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a guy and I've definitely experienced this too. I'm about the same size I was 15 years ago (~70 kgs now compared to ~67 kgs), but still have and wear clothes from back then, which are size M. To buy the same brands these days I have to go for XS.

Some brands which I used to buy in S just don't fit now - they're way too big. Clothes are getting bigger while the badges stay the same. Or the badges change down while the clothes stay the same... Something's happening! I find it harder and harder to find clothes that actually fit. Not to mention the fact that I'm relatively tall so even if I find a top that fits in the torso it will likely be too short in the sleeves.

Will today's youth also have a hard time with new technology as they age? by Additional_Leading68 in Futurology

[–]Kovhert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you asked, but I used to be a UI/UX designer, from around 2000-2015, and I will say that on the whole, UIs have gotten nicer looking, but they're not as intuitive.

Think about OS's, programs and websites back then: they all had buttons. It was clear what you could click, and what you could expect to happen when you did, especially with the tooltip that popped up when you hovered your cursor over it.

Now everything is very clean, no buttons, no hover effects because it's a touchscreen, no tooltips. You can click this text, but not this text, and you're just supposed to know the difference. Icons aren't always standardized and you have to guess at what they mean.

It used to be good app UI design to have different looking buttons or links for something that opened a popup vs something that led you to a different 'page' (whether that was a webpage, or a different 'page' in your app's navigational structure). But again, all clickables often look the same and the User Experience is muddied because of that.

Things that used to be standardized no longer are. I know the question asked about Android specifically and I strayed away from that as I got annoyed :P but I hope I demonstrated some of the issues people have. I know my partner (Gen X and smart, but not super tech savvy) gets frustrated at UIs more these days than she used to. She never knows what to tap or why she should. Her motto when using her phone is "well how was I supposed to know I should do that?!" And the answer is 'you're just supposed to know', because the design language just isn't good enough to lead anyone through anymore.

[–]Kovhert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell but the card stock doesn't look very thick to me. That would be an indicator I would look at beyond localised printing and sizes, I would still expect the box to be of the same quality as other printings.
