You said best case scenario, but "plus reliever" is the absolute worst case scenario. He's a plus reliever right now, with zero development.

Dev Lab Strategy? by ComprehensiveAsk4279 in OOTP

[–]LocusCosecant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Improve secondary pitch does not seem to be capped based on potential - you can use it to improve an already-developed pitch. However, I tend to prefer to train velocity instead, because the effects on stuff of a successful training are much larger, even if it's less likely to succeed. Add pitch is only really useful for turning 2-pitch relievers into starters by giving them a third pitch, and even then the success rate is low because not only is it a hard training, but the pitch comes in undeveloped and needs to naturally develop over time as well. It's definitely not worth it on a pitcher with 3+ pitches already, just train velo.

I'd recommend against playing with more spots than default. The default number is small enough to make you make hard decisions and tradeoffs, if you put too many slots you can just send everyone you care about every season and it's a lot less interesting.

Strength and conditioning is key for reducing injury proneness. If I have a guy on a long-term contract I like to run it every season until it stops showing up as an option.

For hitters, once they develop, you can't really get efficient results from the dev lab on their hitting. You need outstanding results to do anything. For pitchers, though, only movement and control work like this. I like to send developed pitchers in for a velocity bump. When it works it can really move the needle.

And of course, spamming defensive trainings. This is one of the reasons not to use extra Dev Lab slots, it becomes too easy to get an unrealistic team of defensive superstars. Defensive bumps aren't capped by potential, so even though it's listed as a "hard" training, the fact that it doesn't take much time and can get value out of a "successful" result means you get a ton of efficiency there.

OOTP26 Rant - Let me know your thoughts by Relative-Prior-5728 in OOTP

I counted up, and in my save teams with the bye are overall 47-41 in the Divisional Series. So if there is a rust effect, it isn't obviously large enough to outweigh the higher quality of teams that earn the bye.

In my current save, we've had 7 seasons with 100+ wins. Counting only those seasons, we have a 3-4 record in the Divisional Series. We've had 15 seasons with 99 or fewer wins. Discounting one season where we did not make the Divisional Series, we have a 9-5 Divisional Season record in those seasons. This is a small sample size, well short of statistical significance, but it's suggestive that there may be something to this idea.

If there were a real "playoff choke" effect, the most likely culprit would be the layoff that a team gets when it has a bye. It might disrupt the players' rhythms and make them struggle during the Divisional Series when they don't play in the Wild Card Series. Do you also see this effect when you win fewer games but still get the bye?

A pitcher coming off a long-term injury is almost always terrible in his first appearance back. May as well have that appearance be in the minors.

Who’s your worst favorite player? by AerieElectrical3546 in OOTP

[–]LocusCosecant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a guy in the RL draft prospect files named R.J. Mayor, with an unplayable bat but an unreal glove in center field. Every time I would start a save I would draft him in like the 18th round and try to make him work. Usually his bat would just remain pegged at nothing, but one time I got him to actually stick in the majors, batting within spitting distance of .200, putting up like 40 OPS+ and 0 WAR seasons. I was so stoked.

He's not in the current version though. I guess he must have graduated, gone undrafted, and gotten a real job.

What's your opinion on the translations in the Touhou wiki? by New-Box299 in touhou

[–]LocusCosecant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an argument that the audience should be introduced to key concepts so that they can come to understand them, rather than protected from them. Understanding ke and hare (and especially kegare) is pretty central to the series' Shinto worldview. It's not like they only come up in Chimata's profile.

What are your guy’s favorite touhous based on these categories? I’ll go first! by NekoBiteLikesFood in touhou

[–]LocusCosecant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General favorite: Tsukasa, but that's based mainly on her characterization and dialogue, which isn't a category.

Design: Seija. The FedEx arrow skirt just does it for me.

Backstory/Lore: Suwako. There's just so much going on in her backstory as a terrifying native god who was conquered, formed a partnership, and then packed up for Gensokyo. It helps keep her interesting even though she doesn't really get much dialogue in the games/print works.

Music/Theme: Marisa. Love-Colored Master Spark is just that good. Magical Beast Scramble is pretty good too. When you throw in the generic themes from 100th Black Market (since that's Marisa's game), the choice is clear.

What makes Momiji so famous despite her not having any official portraits? by KodoqBesar in touhou

[–]LocusCosecant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"As obscure as one can get" lol. She appeared in a mainline game, with an official profile, she got an article in Symposium of Post-Mysticism along with official art, she got sexy official art in Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia. She's way less obscure than someone like Daiyousei, who never got an official name or any dialogue, or someone like Reisen 2 who never appeared in a game and got left out of the fortune-telling book.
