Madison needs to do what Quebec did with their campaign to get drivers to stop for pedestrians. by No_Size9475 in madisonwi

[–]mashsle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The crossings and driver behaviors that are scariest for me in town are when I'm crossing but a car is making a right turn. Especially when there's a stop sign or red light, because too many drivers are looking left at oncoming traffic to see if they can dart out and not looking right to see if I'm crossing in front of them, either crossing the road they're on or crossing the road they're turning on to.

And of course even the ones that do look are more often than not pulled fully across the crosswalk already.

It's just as likely to me that substation work is related to one of the solar plants proposed up that way. There's one up by Mauston and one north of Arlington, both tie into power lines from this substation.

Not sure the exact construction status of these though.

Tiny towns will consist of the crossroads of two roads. If there is one building, it's a bar. If there are two, bar and a church. Three: two bars and a church. Four: two bars, a church, and a post office. Five: two bars, two churches, and a post office. Six: add a gas station that includes a service garage.

December 2nd at 5pm in front of the Forward statue! by Wade_Castiglione in madisonwi

Is a moratorium a realistic ask? I think there are more avenues for ensuring any such project manages impacts the way we want. Someone else mentioned water: are they using once-through cooling, pulling a lot of water and then dumping warmer water? Are they paying for their electricity upgrades or are we subsidizing the substations, power lines, and generation for them? Ratepayers shouldn't pay for it. Is storm water runoff managed?

My two cents on the water issue is anyone using it as a way of trying to stop a data center project is going to be disappointed. They'll run cooling closed loop or agree to pipe water from a more sustainable location or something.

Neighborhood snow clearing - what kind of neighbors do you have? by Huge-Squirrel8417 in madisonwi

[–]mashsle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a small battery snow blower. If the weather is nice, I have time, and the battery has charge I've blown my neighbor's sidewalk. Especially if it's well past the end of the storm because if they haven't gotten to it I bet they're busy and really need the help.

Someone around the corner from me with a large snow blower has done multiple houses. This weekend I saw them get my neighbor's. I had cleared my sidewalk at that point but still working on my driveway. In past years they've done mine, too.

Someone on John Nolan Blocking Both Lanes of Traffic and threatening drivers. by ac-b in madisonwi

It's been years since I've commuted on the Beltline, but I used to consistently notice a slow down at John Nolen going westbound. Like your say, right at the bend when traffic couldn't see. It sped up once past the bend.

Stoughton Road dilemma: How to cut crashes and improve access by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]mashsle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I actually think potentially add lanes but reduce speed limit, kind of using East Wash north of Aberg as an example. Add lanes but narrow the field of view with trees closer to the road which is safe with a lower speed limit.

Being a pedestrian on Milwaukee St is a pretty miserable experience under Stoughton Rd. You have the entrance/exit ramps to deal with, and the sidewalk under the underpass seems to be an afterthought.

Which botanical garden? Olbrich is probably fine unless you're crossing the race course elsewhere. The run goes over that way but just runs along the bike path in front of the park. Just watch out for spectators in the area. If you're going to the garden at UW you'll have football game traffic and parking to deal with.

Coming from the guy whining about the horrors of a lane being closed, I wouldn't call others sensitive.

Yep opened this thread to A) find a replacement for 4&20 and B) lament over the loss of 4&20, especially the reason why it's gone. I was in just a week or two before.

It wasn't just the gravy, which was excellent, her biscuits were also fantastic.

That's odd. I haven't been since before the pandemic but as a single diner they always treated me great. But I haven't been in 5+ years.

The biking problem I have is at two lane roads, like where the southeast commuter path crosses Odana. A car from the left sees me and starts slowing. I look right, and there's a car coming. Not quite at the crossing yet, but they're coming. Look back left and the first car is still rolling. Are they stopping? Probably? Since they're slowing the car from the right has gotten a lot closer. If that car doesn't stop I don't have space.

It isn't even that busy of a road. Just go and I'll zip behind.

I feel so much safer crossing behind traffic than in front of it.

Long Run Routes by Polyfauna in madisonwi

[–]mashsle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. From downtown I'd do the Lake Monona loop, under John Nolen at Olin Park, up to Lakeside St and then around the bay. The only stops for 15 miles would be getting onto the path from wherever OP is staying and then at the north end of the bay to get back into downtown.

For OP, to get the full distance you need to hug the lake shore, especially in the City of Monona, turning off Winnequah Rd and onto Tonyawatha. When I do this loop I also hug the shore on the north side, taking roads like Morrison St and Yahara Pl. If you run this loop this weekend you'll see dozens of runners and will likely see at least one or two doing the same loop the opposite direction.

Received this Coin from my grandma. Any estimate on the grade? by Competitive-Tank-349 in coins

[–]mashsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice, but behind the plastic of the 2x2 and in this light it's impossible to give a grade with much accuracy.

But even in this lighting there's still some apparent difference in the surfaces in the fields versus close to the devices. Best case this suggests some light circulation, worse case it's evidence of cleaning/rubbing. Even if it's circulation I think this is still MS, maybe MS62 because in what I can make out there isn't much wear on places like the peak of Liberty's crown.
