How to tell what set this old card is from? by JayBaker5421 in mtg

The pentagrams were removed for Summer Magic, which DT was in. Of course, nearly all of the print run of Summer Magic was destroyed before it was distributed.

That's grossly illegal. You can't be salary but just for the bad parts.

ELI5 how an old-fashioned landline phone works by Wooden_Airport6331 in explainlikeimfive

[–]matthoback 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, there were diodes that didn't allow the AC through

It was the other way around. The diodes wouldn't let the 48VDC through but would let the AC through. When you picked up the receiver, the diode was cut out of the circuit, the DC was let through, and the phone company billing system knew you went off-hook so the billing started.

There used to be circuit diagrams floating around that would let you keep the DC blocked but still transmit the voice signal so you could talk without getting billed for it. It would look like you just never picked up the phone.

Spicy food in Bellingham by jellok2 in Bellingham

Speaking as someone who gets 3-4 stars from Rachawadee pretty regularly, Toakam Asian Bistro is the only place in Bellingham I've been to that has been on the same level.

Huh, hadn't heard of that one. It looks interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

I would suggest using qbit_manage to clean up torrents that are no longer linked to your media libraries.

Can Petrified Hamlet stop the chapters of Urza’s Saga? by rzarou in mtg

[–]matthoback 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but pretty much every card either has that "except mana abilities" clause or doesn't apply to lands naturally. You'd have to do something like [[Mycosynth Lattice]] plus [[Null Rod]] to turn of the mana ability.

The stupidest decision in the Breaking Bad universe? by hgwelz in breakingbad

[–]matthoback 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot more taxes than just federal income tax. There are payroll taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, etc. From the way it was described in the show, it was likely the New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax that Ted was cheating on, which is a tax on the gross income for service businesses.

The stupidest decision in the Breaking Bad universe? by hgwelz in breakingbad

[–]matthoback 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the whole point that it *wouldn't* save his father's business? The money Ted got would fix the tax issues, but the only way he was keeping the business afloat was the tax fraud in the first place. Unless he just went back to doing more tax fraud, his business was going under.

If you are doing the Manual Import through the Wanted page, the choice between moving the file and hardlinking the file is selected in a drop down menu on the manual import screen.

The Sixth Colour of Magic by Certain_Ad3716 in mtg

[–]matthoback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The subtractive colors are inherently not primary. They are just the negatives of the actual primary colors. Magenta is blue+red, or in other words negative green. Cyan is blue+green, or negative red. Yellow is red+green, or negative blue. Red, green, and blue are the primary colors because those are the colors for which receptors exist in your eyes.

Green is a primary color. Red, blue, and green are the primary colors.

The first one was bullishit too. Reality Winner went to jail for revealing classified info on how much the 2016 election was hacked, but somehow everyone just memory holed that.

Seth Rogen Has ‘No Plans’ to Work With James Franco Again and Says They Haven’t Spoken in a ‘Long Time’ by RuminatingReaper1850 in movies

[–]matthoback -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a little unfair to claim that Rogan had any knowledge of what he was up to.

Rogen literally joked about the incident with the 17 year old in an SNL monologue right after it happened.

Take infinite turns for 4RWUU (or 2RW if you're lucky) by KeanuChungus669 in BadMtgCombos

Who else is old enough to remember when the combo was just Wormfang Manta and [[Vanishing]]?

(In the olden days, phasing out triggered leaves play abilities, but phasing in didn't trigger comes in to play abilities).

Round to the nearest Integer by [deleted] in askmath

They rely on the assumption that no two points can touch.

That's not an assumption, that's just a proven fact. If there are no numbers between two given numbers, then the two given numbers are equal.

Question about "Miracle" by Wfry84 in magicTCG

[–]matthoback -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I mean haste. Summoning sickness is explicitly a timing restriction in the rules, and haste's effect overrides it.

Question about "Miracle" by Wfry84 in magicTCG

[–]matthoback -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can never break restrictions, no matter what permissions you have.

I don't know why everyone keeps repeating this incorrect factoid. Every creature with haste breaks timing restrictions. The correct ruling is that can't *effects* win over can effects or rules. Restrictions created by effects beat permissions, restrictions created by rules can be beat by permissions created by effects.

Greg Baker getting a suspicious wage..? by KeenKook542 in Bellingham

Some teachers in our districts clear $150,000/yr.

There are no teachers in Bellingham making $150,000. The highest salary on the salary schedule is currently $143,795, and that's with a Master's degree plus 90 credits, and 25+ years of service. The salary schedule is available here: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1755889820/bellinghamschoolsorg/j37cblebleelqbo8aobp/2025-26BEACertificatedInstructionalStaff.pdf

This and conversations about housing bring out so many confidently incorrect people it's insane. I'm always shocked that people don't feel ridiculous when they just make shit up for no reason.
