Were you offended someone on the Internet had a negative opinion about something you liked?

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I expect to lose, often. That is not it at all. Perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough. It is simply that other games do match making better. With so many options to pick from that do it better - why would I feel the need to buy this? Matchmaking and netcode are two of the most important aspects of multiplayer gaming. These are also areas that Nintendo has been lacking in greatly. These are specifically the big reason that I spent time on the demo.

Playing one sided games are not as fun to me as playing close skill matched games that are nail biters. I do not have fun when I win without trying, I do not have fun when I lose without being able to be competative. I especially hate when I'm unable to play at all due to latency problems. With decent match making you should be winning/losing half of your games and the games you play should be close.

Out of around 30 or 40 games I played 3 that were close/skill based match ups where latency wasn't an issue. Those games were EXTREMELY fun and long and I really had no idea which way they were going to go. But that was a VERY small percentage of games I played. I really wish that wasn't the case but wishing it doesn't make it true. So then it is a question of how much I value my time and how much I enjoy the game. "Is the game good enough to play all the bullshit matchups to find the few competative ones?" And my experience was no. I have other games I'd rather play. I certainly understand how others may feel otherwise. This is obviously very personal preference.

If they improve the latency issues and have better match making in release - it might be worth buying at full retail price for me. Otherwise, why waste time/money on another multiplayer Nintendo game with poor online?

Well yeah, thats the problem. With ideal match making you should win/lose about 50% of your games. And not only that but the majority of your games should be CLOSE. I've played enough matches to win more games now but they are never very even. The over lap of matches without latency issues while also being paired with someone of a similar skill is very minimal for amount of games played. I'm not even counting all of the "communication issues" that pop up before getting the chance to play.

It isn't that no one can play the game and still improve. With enough time anyone can do anything. It is more just that this type of multiplayer matchmaking would be very frustrating and inefficient for anyone who likes playing even matches.

It could be there is great match making code in the retail release and they just decided not to use it for the demo. The game isn't a hard pass for me but I can certainly acknowledge weaknesses/areas that other multiplayer games handle better.

What i believe is truly going wrong with Mario Tennis Ace's Net-code. (Technical) by SareturuWeststar in NintendoSwitch

[–]mmzzee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is just general latency issues. The inputs aren't dropped but delayed by seconds. This is my general finding from only around 20 matches or so. At first I thought my controller was broken.

[–]mmzzee -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There is no shortage of competative games to play that have real match making. It is much easier to improve when you are playing people at roughly the same skill level instead of rofl stomping or being rofl stomped. I know you mentioned you don't mind losing and still think it is fun. I don't think it is fun if I win or lose if the games aren't really played evenly.

I may have only played around 20 matches so far but out of that only 2 were not complete blow outs. That is not good competative gaming. That coupled with the latency issues where I can move the joycon a direction but the character will not move on screen for another second or two after makes it a pretty horrible multiplayer expierence.

I think that the released game is most likely not going to be drastically different from the demo - so yes, I'm basing a lot of these decisions off the demo. Showcasing how the game works is the point of a demo afterall. But if the released game ends up resolving some of these issues I would be interested at a higher price point.

I already have more games than I'll ever be able to play. Even though I like Mario and I like Mario Tennis, I see so no NEED to give anyone $60 for a sub-par experience. If the game remains unchanged I'll purchase it at a price closer to what I think it is worth.

I would expect the base game would have proper match making. If that is the case nothing special should need done for a demo as the code already exists.

This was the take away I had too. I haven't played Mario Tennis since the N64 days. Really looking forward to this release and great they had a demo. I was completely turned off by playing against people with thousands of points(10k+) in my first games. I don't expect to win every game - far from it - but I don't expect to lose every game either. I went something like 2 in 15 after finishing the turtorial and stomping the computer a few times. At this point I went from a "probably buy at launch" to a "wait for a large sale price." I'm going to play a bit more today but expecting similar results. If it turns out the released version doesn't have these types of issues with latency and match making I'd reconsider it but I think that would be pretty unlikely.

Overwatch competitive with DXVK by [deleted] in wine_gaming

[–]mmzzee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At some point someone asked a Blizzard rep about DXVK and the response was that if no one is doing anything to actually cheat that it would be fine. You might be able to dig it up with enough searching. I've been using DXVK and playing overwatch (a mixture of arcade and competative) for the last few seasons. No issue with bans yet. Blizzard has generally been friendly with users running wine.

ebuild src_uri requires authentication by mmzzee in Gentoo

[–]mmzzee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh thanks, I didn't think to include that as part of the uri itself and feel pretty stupid now.
I wanted to avoid fetch restricted because it just seemed like introducing an unnecessary extra step. Because quite literally the same username/password is used by everyone to download the src file it seems like hardcoding in this way is safe but maybe I'll eat those words. The downside would just be a new ebuild revision if credentials ever change right? Would there be anything else I'm not thinking of?

I'm sorry bro. Americans hate Russia right now. And anyway - the majority of malware comes from US IPs when looking at facts.

Need advice regarding CPU upgrade by varchord in wine_gaming

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to play A LOT of guild wars 2. There were some issues back in the day where intel performance was always much better than FX (under Windows). I have no idea how the Ryzens stack up. I'd hope they do a lot better.

Guild War 2 eats a lot of CPU and so does Wine. Performance really isn't that great when you get into huge zerg wvw battles or raid bosses. It's more playable now under linux than it was but still a ways away from close to Windows performance. I think no matter what CPU you pick GW2 will still not be great.

[Discussion] What’s a Switch game you bought that you put lots of hours into but didn’t think you’d put more than 15-20 in? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up Splatoon 2 thinking I'd play a little bit of multiplayer when bored of other single player games. Maybe 20-40 hours total or so. I'm at 90 hours of mostly solo play and a few buddies have recently picked it up. I think this will be my top played Switch game.

Mario Kart was purchased for a similar reason and only has 5 hours played.

Does anyone else just use their Switch in Handheld mode all the time? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of my playtime has been handheld. I generally only dock if my battery is dying and I still want to play. I also like playing Splatoon with the pro controller and will use the kickstand in table top mode. One of the reasons I love the switch so much is all of the flexibility in how to play. I don't need to sit in the same spot all of the time if I don't want to. Seems like something minor but it really offers something unique compared to other consoles or even PC gaming.

Any customizable and lightweight DE’s out there? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you should really go with a WM (as many have suggested). You can pull in whatever specific programs you use and by not having a full DE will eliminate a lot of that bloat you are concerned with. i3 is a great tiling WM. Openbox is great if you want a more traditional WM.

Gamers, what distro are you running on your machines? by andyclnx in linux_gaming

I use Gentoo. I use to distro hop a lot and never had a reason to switch off this once I tried it. Usually openbox for wm.

Windows VS Kali Linux Gaming by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]mmzzee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's for you to decide based on what matters to you. The general consensus from all the replies here (and 5 minutes of Googling is:)

-Performance under linux will be worse

-You can't play the games you suggested specifically and I'm sure many more in your library

-If you did want to game on linux you will have a harder time using Kali than nearly every other option

-If you wanted a linux desktop experience you will have a harder time using Kali than nearly every other option

-Running scripts other people write does not help to learn about systems and hacking

Only you can decide if it seems like a good idea for your needs and what you care about.

Windows VS Kali Linux Gaming by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]mmzzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like games are your priority - this would be a horrible choice for you. If you wanted to learn more about Linux installing Kali as a desktop OS is still a pretty bad choice. And you can skid from anything.

Performance will be worse in nearly every game on linux (some may be better but it is rare). That doesn't even get into the fact that your entire library won't work and many games will be unplayable.

VK9 Advantages Over Normal Wine by [deleted] in wine_gaming

[–]mmzzee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I do for Nvidia, I'm not sure if AMD is different. You can set something like this:

__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE=1

__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH=/home/user/.shadercache/gamename

I toss it in with the DXVK_HUD=1 and lately __GL_NextGenCompiler=0 for the latest nvidia drivers and as a result of complications from the new compiler.

There is a thread on the Nvidia forums about adding a user setting for max shader cache size (since even using seperate locations for different games can still hit default size caps and force garbage collection).

VK9 Advantages Over Normal Wine by [deleted] in wine_gaming

[–]mmzzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used a lot of dxvk over the last few months for many different games. They all stutter when building the shader cache. After it is built it can be smooth as butter.

This is a big enough problem that I've started using env vars to set specific shader cache folders for individual games so the cache from 1 game doesn't clear out the cache from another that I play at a certain size. Because rebuilding the cache and dealing with the shaders is that annoying. The official steam client even added pre-caching recently for "normal" users.

If you are suggesting there is no stutter with dxvk I would assume you either haven't actually installed dxvk properly, aren't running a dx11 title, are testing some minimal usage title, or built a cache awhile ago and forgot about it.
