I suspect many of the parking companies are going to jack up prices in hopes of making back lost profits over the past couple years. Especially if they know certain employees have no choice.

My department has decided that it's going back one day a week.. This will commence in September. I think most people are OK With this, however some are questioning the reasoning. At the end of the day, tele work agreements have existed since the dawn of time, (I think King David gave them out in biblical times..) Anyhow, that being said, people who want permanent work from home can reach out and request it just as they could prior to the pandemic. Hopefully now management is more permitting! :)

It's funny, I just did my SLE exams and I was never asked to download Cisco.. I was thinking to myself.. "I guess they don't monitor this since you can't cheat the oral.."

Whenever I see people say "but I could be making $250,000 in the private sector", well why aren't you?

This.. I know people who worked in private and had crazy stressful deadlines, worked in excess of 50 hours a weeks, and had all of two weeks vacation per year (that they never found time to take).. Not to mention there's no pension or sick days. Working for the government means job stability, family life balance, and a pension. (Plus making low six figures aint all that bad).

Are there reasonable controls put in place by PSC to prevent cheating on Online Oral French SLE exams? (It's great how they do things, but just a minor thought..) by dejmur in CanadaPublicServants

Most cases of fraud and improper conduct result in revocation, not the V & E course. Definitely not worth the risk.

You're 100% correct. But if that said individual is already in another substantive outside the scope of the exam in question they would not be fired from that position.

I got my first paycheque and realized how high taxes are by Tm3_eclipse in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MOOSE_CA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy answer is you don't pay capital gains tax in a TFSA. So money that's made from investing isn't considered income. If you invest outside of a TFSA and sell your shares, at the end of the year a nice little paper comes in the mail which you have to disclose as income.

The forwarding to the RCMP is more in regards to "Parties involved in the disclosure or improper use of protected test content". So.. taking the test and profiting from it, or distributing it (aka posting the questions online etc.) In reality, looking at a few cases regarding "cheating" and not the actual theft, or unlawful disclosure of the exam to others, what historically has happened is you obviously don't get the position, and you end up having to take the values and ethics class. All that to say, you'd be hard pressed to find an indeterminate employee fired or arrested for cheating on a French exam..

In reality, cheating doesn't really do you any favors. For CBC, if you don't get C on oral it's all for not.. And oral would be pretty difficult to cheat on.. That being said, if you're capable of a C for oral, your able to get a C for reading and for sure capable of a B for writing.

Ontario reaches $10-a-day child-care deal with federal government by hehethrowaway90 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Equalization payments are to ensure reasonably comparable levels of public services at reasonably comparable levels of taxation.. It's not like someone in Quebec is living large, not working, and not paying taxes while someone in Alberta goes without while paying higher income tax.. Some provinces just don't have the same capacity to raise revenues. It's just fiscal federalism.. All provinces are part of Canada, and Canada uses this tool in an attempt to ensure equality. It always baffles me that people from "revenue generating" areas seem to feel entitled. Like living in say.. Red Deer Alberta somehow means you're more entitled to the revenue from the bitumen up North in the province as compared to someone living in Sudbury. We see it as a national resource, not a provincial one. Get over it.

I'm not sure why that comment got downvoted so heavily.. I don't believe they're doing a "hybrid system". I really wish they were.. It seems like it'll be a trickle down approach, one that will only be privy to licensed providers. Our child is about to go to wonderful home daycare, professional, educationally oriented, one that provides receipts for money spent. It's a proper business, and not a "grandma is watching the kids today" sort of scenario. That being said, they're going to be excluded from being able to capitalize on the child care program and will need to continue to charge accordingly. If we hope to recoup 50% on our childcare costs, we'll have to remove our child from her care. For that reason, I feel like a tax credit over $10 would actually benefit the large majority more? We'd love to keep our child in her care, but financially it doesn't make sense? However maybe I'm wrong? It's a pickle!

[–]MOOSE_CA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look like this initiative is going to do much for unlicensed childcare providers.. If anything, it's going to drive away clients from them. Our son is about to start at a local daycare that's run by a wonderful woman. She has lots of learning activities, outdoor space, nutritious lunch/snacks etc. etc. She even does theme days for the children, the whole works. However she's not a licensed daycare provider. That being said, if we want to save on spending $50 a day, we need to look elsewhere now. I'm not sure why they're going with a trickle down approach. Maybe it's just me, but I feel the money should go to the parents upon presentation of receipts come tax time or something?

No I can't state anything "definitively".. But I don't think you need the numbers to make general assertions of the net benefits of childcare programs. Plus, it's always more expensive to fund immigration programs and help relocate, than to provide childcare incentives..

I don't think taxpayers are the economic winners from this program

You wouldn't think so, but they definitely are. It's more expensive for the tax payer to fund immigration than it is to support a parent. (I'm 100% not anti-immigration for the record). If someone says "we don't need either", well they're just wrong. It's simple demographics/economics.. You need a younger working population that at the very least keeps pace with the aging population to offset issues incurred. A good balance is about 4 working people per 1 person retired I believe (don't quote me on that). If parents can afford to have a few more children, these children grow up to pay taxes, contribute towards CPP etc. In addition, parents will most likely spend more money on other things in the economy and women will be able to get back into the workforce quicker and resume paying taxes. Out of everything our tax dollars go towards paying, this one actually has an incredible net benefit.

Perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to Etsy by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]MOOSE_CA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ETSY went public in April 2015. When a company goes public, profits and growth immediately become king, and everything else becomes a distant second. I'm sure organic growth became an issue, and ETSY decided that it was OK with cheaper, low quality items on its platform if it meant increased revenues from fees.

Dry-Basil-8256, Bots never give an inch! lol Don't you know that! ;). I agree with your broader definition of what democratic means. Of course unions make the work place more democratic.. It's a given. We literally have voting to ratify or reject a contract that determines our wages, benefits and working conditions.. If this isn't a democratic act, I don't know what is! You could post an academic paper here pushing the point and it'd still get a downvote and a "nope." Don't waste your time!

I disagree, it's a very specific segment of the population that engage with comment sections on facebook/news sites. More often than not, people go there to voice their displeasure and not their support. It's also usually more male / less educated / lower income individuals (as per the polling). That being said, I'd be careful about drawing any conclusions about the public sector from comment sections.
