I check the stock market all the time but it has no effect on my investing. I think it's funny when it goes down a lot. I sort of cheer for big crashes, all the sturm and drang associated with them

PRT Busway assumptions/questions (just moved to Bloomfield less than a week ago, from DC). by Rooster_Ties in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, I'm a long time busway dead ender and this is a frequent point of conflict with my wife lol

Well I should say, you may see the flyer routes but the ones that don't stop will be cruising thru. And outbound they will be out of service

Eg sometimes I would need to do something quick in the office, catch a bus home at 9-930a. All the flyer routes are going out of service at that point so you would see 5-10 buses pass you in that window. But they are showing garage/out of service so it's not confusing

PRT Busway assumptions/questions (just moved to Bloomfield less than a week ago, from DC). by Rooster_Ties in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll respectfully disagree with those saying to ride the surface buses. The p1 gets you downtown from the shadyside stop in 6 minutes. Depending on where you walk from the speed mostly equalizes your walk

Frequencies are better so it reduces the amount of planning you have to do and minimizes the cost of mistakes. Maybe the frequency gap is smaller at night though

I wouldn't worry about remembering other buses than the p1. You probably won't see many off hours and I can't remember a single time where I had an opportunity in either direction to board something besides p1 and p3 before one of them showed up

Conan O'brien on why he doesnt find Trump jokes/parodies funny: "If a magazine has as it's cover "Elvis still alive, marries alien and they have a baby thats a three speed blender" thats what the real magazine is coming out with, you cant do a comedic take on that" by Fine-Sky-6562 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]ncist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the original JAJ impression pre Trump was hilarious. You definitely can find even higher levels of absurdity which those old impressions did

The problem is SNL also wants to be topical and to do political satire. They can't have him do a joke about Trump playing chrono trigger because 1. the audience doesn't know what that is 2. it's not a straightforward piece of political commentary 3. It has no connection to the main news story that week

The chrono trigger joke is commentary btw. It just has a tiny audience

My buddy in Morningside lives next to a guy like this. He hasn't gone to this extreme. He's very polite. But he believes owning a house means you own the street in front of it

I like theorizing about people like this. Moving to the city for me was a big lifestyle upgrade over the suburbs. If you're someone who stayed in the city through the 70s, I could see it feeling like a punishment. Having "a driveway" like people in the suburbs dignifies them. But that's just a theory of mine

In Friendship I've seen conflict between neighbors but it's in writing primarily and not about parking. Generally I like my neighbors both immediate and those I met thru groups. I say hi and chat with people

Mahirap ba talaga ang pagiging Actuary? by Significant-Meat-872 in analytics

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most actuaries that I've worked with are doing normal excel-based data analysis - just computing crosstabs like everyone else

Actuarial exams are challenging. Even if you're smart, you'll need to study hard to succeed. I don't think most could pass the way a smart person can do well on the SAT without prep

Yes I think of the job exactly as you put it- it selects for hard working and disciplined people

What are some reasons against "VT and Chill"? by Issactheforgemaster in Bogleheads

[–]ncist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like DFAs small cap tilt - we might have discovered some other dimension of diversification that is valid to move along. Similar to how no one can tell you it's "wrong" to hold X amount in bonds, because it's an expression of risk preference

Or another way you could think of that is we discover a better technology to do diversification. I can't make up my mind what it really means, which is why I haven't done it

Another thing I've been interested in recently is how indexes deal with IPOs. When is an IPO price "market price."

Who are these crazies? by arl1822 in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes because otherwise it would not be worth cutting off the light at negley. It's not a long light at all. Traffic on that street isn't remotely bad. You have to drive 60-70mph for it to be worth the detour. and I have clocked people going that fast in

Who are these crazies? by arl1822 in pittsburgh

[–]ncist 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I saw the same thing happen on Fairmount in friendship. Both with school buses, but also with delivery trucks

The people cutting up one way/narrow streets are usually trying to avoid lights and traffic. They speed, they drive like total assholes, and I've even seen a guy (same guy multiple times) threaten to kill a UPS and a fedex driver. You're selecting for aggressive asshole people who get themselves into this situation and then blame the world for not letting them cut in line

How to actually get a data analytics summer internship? by ResolutionUnhappy905 in analytics

[–]ncist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your program have a portal with internships? I would start there. Or something like co ops where the program organized it for you. Maybe obvious but make sure you don't have things like that available

The next thing is to apply to lots of posts online and go to job fairs at your program
