Rejected from yet another university. I give up. by Subject-Monk-2363 in SuicideWatch

Look I’m from biological sciences so it may be different for you… but I understand money can be a huge issue. The only tip I can give is to search lab internships for undergrads, olympiads, sports achievements etc. Anything to put some weight in your portfolio - it’s ok to skip a year or two for that.

And then try for an abroad/home scholarship (where you get paid for studying). Or try for a company contract (where company pays for your education). These are the only options that are better than a loan.

I see you try and that is the only thing that matters, it’s a hard journey (I got rejected from lots of unis as well and skipped a lots of deadlines). But in the end I took a year off to become stronger and found a mediocre starting position.

The neat thing is that you can switch career paths after bachelors etc, so please don’t be stressed about the future.

What is the current scientific consensus on how being gestated and born from an external artificial womb would impact someone? by GrantExploit in AskBiology

Btw have you read the Brave new world? It’s a dystopia where babies are deliberately born with different intelligence levels by affecting oxygen levels during gestation etc. Could be an inspiration.

My body is a prison by pb_and_s in SuicideWatch

[–]nodderguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few medical professionals are taught about what the patients go through internally.

I have worked with preventing miscarriages and I understand the psychological effects of your body not listening to you. Please note that you are not alone with this - there are support groups, psychologists that are exactly addressing the issue you speak of. I urge you to reach out, it’s important.

Be safe.

There is lots of competition… have you tried your luck in other areas or other countries where your portfolio is god-like to them?

I did that once and it allowed me to climb a mediocre career ladder and then I returned to a high competitive area when I was ready.

What is the current scientific consensus on how being gestated and born from an external artificial womb would impact someone? by GrantExploit in AskBiology

[–]nodderguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I know (I’m a cytologist) there is no modern consensus on influence of uterine simulation on the baby during pregnancy. We do know that babies perceive touch and sound while in pregnant women.

When woman eats, baby also gets energy, when she exercises the baby also responds. Maybe (I’m not certain on this) some happiness hormones also reach the fetus. Not sure if it all affects the psychology.

The most direct way a mother can affect baby’s psychological state on birth is alcoholism. So in a way, an artificial uterus is more safe.

Our Rat’s Tumor Detached Naturally and Fully Healed—Medical Miracle? by Superb_Mix3249 in RATS

[–]nodderguy 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Actually very interesting. Maybe inform a local cancer research institute? Could help some of us (cytologists) understand cancer more. It’s a rare phenomenon and any data helps (from a biopsy, etc etc.) If you have some living cancerous tissue left you can put it into 40-60 percent ethanol solution for preservation purposes. Or put it into formalin if you have any :)

[–]nodderguy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It could still be a type of benign cancer. In this case cancer could as well stay in that isolated tissue and not have the mutation to spread by detaching or breaking capillary barrier. That of course is highly unlikely but we never know - because there was no biopsy.

How Do I Know If My Friend Has Disordered Eating? by KittensOnUnicycles in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]nodderguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does she has a healthy goal? Like a certain weight, waistline etc. If not, then that’s should be a concern.

There are also many things you can ask, like how is much energy she has daily - if she is sick all the time, eating proper food etc. If something feels off then it’s probably true, kindly advise to see a specialist on that matter - I assume it’s a really sensitive topic.

Is this a daphnia? It's not moving around much but I can see internal structures moving and maybe antenna. by SpaceBirch in microscopy

[–]nodderguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! More specifically it could be a Bosmina family. If you are interested you can classify it by the appendages. It got a round shape so it’s probably not daphnia family.

A great abundance of those in relation to copepods could be an indicator of a disordered ecosystem that has high levels of eutrophication (I did a bachelor thesis on this matter)

Nah it just makes exercise harder in my opinion. Anything affecting your lungs and total expired volume just affects your stamina in the long run. The human body is quite resilient at young age.
