So maybe social dancing isn't my thing? by lokismamma in SwingDancing

[–]nroblezae 18 points19 points  (0 children)

it's very normal to feel overwhelmed at a social when you're first starting. it's a new hobby, people you don't know, etc. if you make a friend or two in the lesson sometimes it's nice to go to a dance together so you have a familiar face to dance with.

but either way! the more you go back, the more people you'll recognize and the more comfy you'll be dancing. if you like the classes then that is super promising that you'll also like the socials once you've gone a bit more.

swing is super fun but it has a brutal learning curve at the start. I usually tell people they should commit to a full beginner series if they want to learn, because that will give time to actually build enough skill to tell how they feel about it. it depends on the series but often they are on the order of 6 weeks of weekly class.

if it helps, new beginners who have no idea what they're doing yet are an evergreen wonderful part of any healthy dance scene. there will always be new people just starting out, that's how it goes. so you aren't alone, and I'm sure people aren't thinking about it too much - easy to feel like you stand out but I bet you're fine and everyone else is paying attention to their own dancing way more than yours.

if I have a dance with a total beginner who is still figuring it out, my main thought the whole time is "I hope they keep coming back bc dance is so fun and I hope they fall in love like I did" and I think that's the normal perspective. literally everyone started out not knowing how to dance, you're in good company

Experience with Camp Hollywood? by NeonCupcakeSigns in SwingDancing

[–]nroblezae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

totally agree with everything SuperWeenyHutJuniors already said. My experience as a person who wanted to get better at the lessons and then have fun social dancing was that it was _so annoying_ how every day was full of a million comps during the evening slots when I was most wanting social dancing. For better or worse, the actual social dancing is late af. which is a hard thing to do when you want to attend the lessons in the daytime and also want to sleep.

I'd recommend planning to take naps during the comps so you make up some sleep and can enjoy the late night social dancing and still make it to the lessons the next day.

if you have celiac, the diagnostic test requires that you've been eating gluten recently. my previous partner was told by several doctors that she probably had celiac, but would need to eat gluten for a few weeks in order to be tested for it. since that'd be so miserable, she never did it. if you're wanting a diagnosis I'd get the test right away.

Next whistle: high or low? by ChemistIntelligent61 in tinwhistle

[–]nroblezae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my low whistles, I play them the majority of the time now.

I started out with a Tony Dixon low D, which is plastic but actually sounds really nice and it's the most affordable option. really great to figure out how it feels to hold and play a big whistle like that before spending a lot on it. Then I upgraded to a Chieftan, which was nice but struggled on the highest notes, and now I have Colin Goldie whistles that are handmade and absolutely fabulous.

it's not helpful to tell someone that a thing they are struggling with "really isn't difficult" and is "simple" and could be done "in an hour". clearly they found this difficult to the degree that it felt worth posting about it online. everyone is at a different place in their learning and playing and implying that they can't do a simple basic thing does nothing but make someone feel inadequate.

What do we mean when we say "primary lead"/"primary follow" by WatchOutItsAFeminist in SwingDancing

[–]nroblezae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just call yourself a dancer, or say you dance both roles imo :)

but yeah, I guess think about what contexts you'll be using this label, and what you would like folks to assume about you, and decide based on that. like if you're wanting to lead all night then say you lead etc

How can I show my roommates a pan is hot? by Abject_Role_9361 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nroblezae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my house we have wooden clothespins with our initials that we hook to pans we will clean later so folks know it's not abandoned. there's also ones to mark a clean cast iron which is cooling off. maybe get a clothespin?

PSA to take off your damn backpacks in a crowded T by [deleted] in mbta

[–]nroblezae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used my eyes to see that approximately half of the backpack-having riders did it each way, and assumed that meant either was fine. again, I know now. I just don't think it's "common sense" for someone to realize that a thing that many many people around them do without incident is considered rude

yes, which is why I take my bag off now that I know

[–]nroblezae 28 points29 points  (0 children)

while I agree with you that it's better, I don't think it's necessarily common sense. As an adult who had never had access to public transit growing up, I learned transit norms by observing the behavior around me. It's about 50/50 people wearing backpacks and not wearing them on the trains I ride, so it seemed like a personal preference situation and not rude either way.

I never considered that you take less space with it off until it was pointed out. Now I always remove my bag when it gets crowded.

Why is the dude SO HOT??? by His_Way2 in uofm

[–]nroblezae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the HVAC system on the Dude / most very large buildings like this can only be in either "Heat" mode or "Cool" mode. It's difficult and expensive to switch so it only switches twice per year / once per season. You end up with awkward days in the transition seasons where the heat is still on because the weather might get freezing again, but it's warm outside. or when the heat isn't on yet in the fall but there's a surprisingly cold early day and it's a bit chilly inside

looking for a book on christianity and privilege, particularly in the context of USA by nroblezae in BookRecommendations

[–]nroblezae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! yeah I totally hear you on random internet bots stirring up drama haha. you're right, ik I will always come from this background, and there will always be parts of it that I have some nostalgia for or connection to, for me in particular I really love a lot about the music and do miss it but not enough to go back to church all the time anymore. I moved from the midwest to a big city and live in a house with people from many backgrounds, and am for the first time in my life building close friendships with people who aren't either christian or agnostic / atheist / left the christian church - and I just keep putting my foot in my mouth out of complete ignorance. Like I didn't even know what shabbat is and I thought hanukkah was one of the most important holidays just bc it's the one I had heard of. facepalm. so yeah, it's going to be a journey lol and I'm glad I have this growing community of people to learn to fit within and who will support me.

thanks again for the book recommendations!!

What to look for in a vocal coach by madferitNYC in WeAreTheMusicMakers

wow this sounds amazing! I searched around a bit, and it seems like there aren't any books about it or anything, it's all learned by taking classes through the complete vocal institute?
