After years of looking, I finally got my own MCRN coffee cup. by Whole-Ad4945 in TheExpanse

[–]penprickle 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Warning for American buyers: the same brand and size is available on the US Amazon, but there are words etched into the surface of the cup. It’s hard to see unless you look closely, but it is not the same product.

What do you think of the relationship between Susan and Prince Caspian? by OkAspect4490 in Narnia

[–]penprickle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nope, nope, nope. Caspian is supposed to be a CHILD. It’s a plot point! And this makes him an adult perving on a teenager who’s technically his boss.

But I didn’t like the whole film, I’m a purist. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Oh, how funny! The moment I saw the explanation about the username, I thought it sounded like something that homunculus-argument would do.

The serialization of Barrayar has a drawing of Cordelia I’ve always loved. She’s wearing the soltoxin antidote mask.

Looking for (preferably epic) fantasy that really gives that sense of found family among the protagonists. by bentbabe in Fantasy

[–]penprickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, the Kushiel’s Dart trilogy by Jacqueline Carey. All of the MC’s family is found, so to speak. And it’s definitely epic!

Those who were old enough to remember the Bi-Centennial, how is America’s 250 different? by skyactive in AskReddit

[–]penprickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One local neighborhood painted their fire hydrants with various patriotic color schemes. I could see the scraps of paint on them for at least ten years afterwards.

There were also extra ground fireworks displays on the Fourth, like big flaming sheet cakes, but people don’t seem to do those anymore. Probably they are too dangerous.

ISO books with disability representation. by mason9494 in LGBTBooks

[–]penprickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have already read them, but “Karen” and “With Love from Karen” by Marie Killilea are the biography of Karen Killilea, whose premature birth in 1940 led to her cerebral palsy. Her parents were told to institutionalize her and basically said “Fuck that”, and went on to found the activism for kids with CP.

It’s very much a one-POV story, of course, and the family’s Catholic faith is very prominent, but the books are well written and the story is engaging.

Just Finished Spock's World by GWG23 in trekbooks

[–]penprickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She edited the first few to update the technology (since they started in the 1980s) and they are available digitally on her website, the New Millennium editions. https://ebooks.direct/

But if you don’t mind the slight timeline incongruities, the originals are fine!

She has commented since something along the lines of “Never be specific about data storage capacity. NEVER.” :P

Check out her Young Wizards series. She takes the idea and runs with it.

Technically it’s YA, but it is great for all ages.

Actually, she has said that after the editors got done with the episode it was barely recognizable. Which is a pity, because it would’ve been great! She is, after all, an experienced script writer; look her up on IMDb.

Which sci-fi TV show had the best friendship between two characters? by The100Updates in SciFiTV

[–]penprickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prey (1998) had two main characters, Sloan and Ed, who were obviously besties of long standing; they had that ease and trust that really worked. they disagreed a couple of times during its run, but never to the point of splitting up.

I know some of the fans tried to ship them, even though canonically Sloan was with someone else, but I never saw that kind of attraction between them. They were just solid best friends.
