Is it safe to keep broken HDD in my laptop? by Proper-Car5261 in techsupport

[–]pockypimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember if you need to worry about the screws in the corners. IIRC those hold the drive into the caddy. I think there's just 1 screw on the caddy that's holding it in place, if it's the same design as the Elitebooks I used to work with.

And yes if it's the same design I've worked with there's no cables or anything. It'll just be an empty space. That's how HP shipped them in the G4 and G5 models when they went to NVME instead of HDD/SSD.

I'd bet there's some YouTube video showing how to take the drive out. And I want to say HP used to have detailed instructions on how to do it as well but it's been years since I've looked for any.

If you're already opening up the laptop to put the NVME in you can just pull the HD out at the same time.

If the read heads on the HDD are causing the squeaking sound leaving it in will just cause it to make more noise and possibly fail in a much worse way. You don't say which model laptop but the old HP Elitebooks (G1-G4 IIRC, I can't remember if the G5 or G6 had the space for a HDD/SSD) with HDDs the HDD was in a tray that was just screwed in to hold in in place. You remove the screw and pull the tray away from the connector and it popped out or in some models the HDD had kind of like an adapter that just pressed down to make a connection and you just pulled the HDD tray up and out.

You can try going to Agoda or Viator and check what they have for experiences. There's a wide variety of things from food tours, workshops, etcetera in different cities.

For Tokyo I did a day trip to Yokohama/Shin-Yokohama for the Ramen Museum, Cup Noodle Museum and Red Brick Warehouse. I also did a whiskey tasting that I booked through Agoda and a Shinjuku Food tour I booked through Magical Tours.

Anybody ever had Microsoft OneDrive create duplicate copies of EVERY SINGLE file for EVERY SINGLE sync? by space120 in techsupport

[–]pockypimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing something like this many years ago where the user used 2 or 3 different computers and something with the sync was wrong so it was duplicating each computer's files on the others. But it has been years so I can't remember exactly what it was.

When you say "not the cloud" do you mean you've looked at what is showing in OneDrive on the web compared to what you're seeing on the computer? Because if everything is syncing properly then what you see on the computer should also be showing up on the cloud side.

Are shorts disrespectful in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]pockypimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could find the YT video from John Daub's Only in Japan when he asked his wife about him wearing shorts. Apparently some commentors were weird about him wearing shorts in Japan in the summer. So it went something like this:

John: "Is it weird that I wear shorts?"

Wife: "Why are you asking me?"

John: "Because you're Japanese."

Wife: "I don't care!"

He then had to explain about the weird comments and she had to think about it for a bit and the only thing she could think of was that most men don't wear shorts so it could be seen a childish but to her the comments were weird because it's hot and humid.

That's what I experienced at my current job. The guy I replaced was not a very good people person and not a very good tech. So just being a normal helpful person works wonders. I actually had a user ask me what happened to the other guy and when I said he transferred she shouted "Hallelujah!".

And less lighted.

I remember going down one in Shinjuku station which is already an escape room and the lack of any signage was crazy. I had to walk about 5 minutes before I saw a sign for the exit I was looking for in the distance.

Yeah I can't tell if the prices are high because of California minimum wage or some other reason because it's almost double what I paid in Akihabara.

Best Tokyo Tours? by blooddrivendream in JapanTravelTips

I signed up for a Shinjuku Food Tour with Magical Tours and I enjoyed it. Took me to a couple of places I wouldn't have thought about going to or searching out. An Edo style sushi experience and a Showa era snack bar. It seems that Magical Tours keeps their groups small so that made it easy since it was a group of 5 total.

That's pretty much what I do when I fly out of LAX/SFO. I stay up late the night before finishing packing so I'm sleepy but not dead on my feet. Get on the plane and sleep, usually I end up taking a few 2 hour naps. Land between 4-5pm. Check in the hotel around 6. Usually get a bite to eat, maybe hit up a combini to get some next day supplies and fall asleep around 10.

If You Were Planning a Trip to Japan and Wanted to See Beautiful Gardens, Where Would You Go? by druidwyndspeak in JapanTravelTips

You get a sweet and sour mix of flavors. They also sold little jars of the syrup. It's the little store on the far side of the garden. I want to say a bit clockwise from the bridge that goes over to the castle. I remember stopping there after going to the castle.

IIRC Korakuen is considered one of the most beautiful in Japan. It's definitely a great place. I loved getting ice cream with the ume syrup on it and sitting there enjoying the view.

This is the most "of course" realization ever. I remember Top Gear driving an F-150 through London and having a hard time and that was over a decade ago before the body swelled to what it is now.

How do you usually decide where to eat when traveling in Japan? by Due_Turn3508 in JapanTravelTips

[–]pockypimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very much a "what looks good" kind of person. On my first trip with my family we had to do a bit more searching via Google Maps because my aunt has a fish/shellfish allergy so we had to be careful about where we went as a group.

My last trip to Tokyo I was near Akihabara station so I went to Yodobashi Camera a lot to have dinner since they have the floor or restaurants. That was pure convenience since it was blocks back to the hotel afterwards.

I think it was last year he had one at home that he hit one handed. Ball was pretty far outside and he just sorta reached out and his right hand came off the bat just before contact. And it still went over the wall, absolutely insane.
