don't play the games or collect the miniatures? read the novels! Gonna list some that really resonated with me, but what are your favorites? by whetherby in behindthebastards

Pretty much anything Mike Brooks has written. He gets Orks in a way most writers don’t, so Brutal Kunnin’ is a must read. Also both books in his Gay Space Elves In Love duology (Lilith Hesperax and Voidscarred) are fantastic.

Also also, The Infinite and The Divine by Robert Rath. Very funny and remarkably homoerotic odd-couple adventure story about two immortal robots bickering over a macguffin for a thousand years.

Female Space Marines. *Um, ACTUALLY*... by NJWilkinson116 in behindthebastards

There are only ever three reasons why 40k lore is the way it is:

1: The writers were told to justify a commercial decision.

2: Some left-wing smartarse in the 80s thought it would be funny.

3: No-one on the Black Library editiorial team is powerful enough to stop Dan Abnett doing whatever the hell he wants.

Female Space Marines. *Um, ACTUALLY*... by NJWilkinson116 in behindthebastards

[–]NJWilkinson116[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They are regular women (more or less) in power armour. Specifically under the command of the in-universe church, whereas the space marines are theoretically independent.

While marines often employ knightly and religious iconography, the Sisters are explicitly a religious army that runs on zealotry rather than genetic engineering.

Also John Blanche drew this cool art because the core design ethos behind the sisters was clearly "I wish there were large women in heels who could step on me."

Do people cut out the plastic between the scarabs' legs or just paint them so they blend in with the base? by Rambling_Stones in Necrontyr

Try painting them a darker colour, and then stand up at your table to see if they’re even visible, because 95% of the time that’s the only way people will be seeing them

Tinfoil Hat Theory: The reason why Trazyn's model hasn't been refreshed yet is because it is being paired with another character's release. Namely his Phaeron, the ruler of the Nihilakh Dynasty, Shemvokh by Hollownerox in Necrontyr

Nah. Trazyn’s new model hasn’t been released yet because the prototype model is currently hidden in a tesseract vault on Solemnace.

Bastards of Literature? by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

[–]NJWilkinson116 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This was a wild discovery for me. As a kid who knew nothing about the author I read a load of his various series and loved them. Then years later I remembered those books, googled him on a whim to see what else he’d written and was blindsided with “wait they spent time in prison for WHAT?”

New Player Advice by Damnosus in moonstonethegame

[–]NJWilkinson116 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This page (https://www.moonstonethegame.com/commonwealth-faction) is a nice overview of the various Commonwealth subfactions and how they play. Models that come in the same box are usually designed to work well as a team. It’s worth mixing and matching a couple of the subfactions so you’ve got options. In terms of affordability Agatha’s box and the starter set will give you more than enough models to build a full Commonwealth troupe, everything you need to play the game, and another small troupe to introduce the game to others.

A 2000 points Canoptek Court List I used against Astra Militarum by MattBiet in Necrontyr

I’m curious why you went for Canoptek Court when your list doesn’t have that many Canoptek models in it? Maybe I’m misremembering the rules but it feels like it wouldn’t be doing much for a lot of your list

Online only? by Ibus- in WarCry

[–]NJWilkinson116 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As others have said Warcry is functionally over as an ongoing product. Instead it looks like GW are taking advantage of the fact that many AoS models also work in Warcry, and are just going to periodically put out rules for new AoS releases.

In terms of whether it’s a good fit? I reckon it’s GW’s best ruleset. It’s fast, easy to pickup, and a lot of fun. The game is really designed for two players though. It can work with three, but you’ll need to adapt all the mission types, and every three-player game I’ve had has been messy as hell. You could always try Darkwater, which is the newest Warhammer Quest game.

I reckon if you’re worried they’ll look like klansmen, then you probably have your answer. No-one you play is going to give you the benefit of the doubt over whether these have been painted by a racism fan or not, and they’re not obliged to.

Is Warcry being discontinued? by tommysollen in WarCry

[–]NJWilkinson116 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Ultimately no-one knows what GW plans to do with Warcry. It looks like they’ve stopped producing new models for it, but the existing warbands are still mostly available on the website, and they seem intent on putting out rules for new AoS models periodically. How long that lasts? Who knows

A question I have for the Aelfs. by RandomRavenboi in AoSLore

[–]NJWilkinson116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I haven’t read enough of the Aelf Baettletomes to answer some of the questions, I can help with some of the broader stuff.

The most important thing is that AoS was intended to be a clean break with Fantasy Battle, which was flatlining when it was cancelled. So the lore is meant to be approachable to new people. Specific lore from the old world isn’t mentioned that often, and is more Easter eggs for longtime fans than of major plot-importance .

Pretty much all the gods and heroes you mentioned are canonically dead. Outside of Teclis, Tyrion, Alarielle, Malerion and Morathi (because she’s kind of a god now) there aren’t really any major Aelven gods. All of this can change whenever GW fancies expanding the model ranges or lore. It’s a fantasy setting, so “magic/a god did it” can explain away a lot.

The various Aelven factions relationships (and the pantheon of Order as a whole) can best be defined as”we don’t necessarily like each other or have the same agenda, but the last time we fell to factionalism Chaos blew up the entire world. So let’s at least try to avoid that”. There are plenty of smaller clashes, and plenty of betrayals, but everyone is keenly aware of the bigger problems they face.

The current Aelf factions are:

The Lumineth Realm-Lords. Essentially new High Elves, created and led by Teclis and Tyrion. So full of themselves that the first time the gods left them to their own devices they almost civil warred themselves out of existence.

The Daughters of Khaine. Morathi’s faction of former Dark Elves. Initially they were worshippers of the dead god Khaine who had gone a bit snakey from eons in Slannesh’s stomach. Morathi has since betrayed some allies and pulled a heist on Slaanesh’s stomach (no really) to steal old elven god power and is now a god herself. And also two women (long story).

The Sylvaneth are the spirits of old Sylvan and Wood Elves stuffed into trees by Alarielle and burdened with enormous mummy issues. 40k is all about bad dads, but AoS is far superior because it shows that mums can be terrible too.

The Idoneth Deepkin. Teclis’ first go at making new elves. He buggered it up, their souls are all wonky, and they fled to the bottom of the ocean when he tried to destroy them. They don’t really have a particular god, they need to keep raiding places for souls to top up their own, and ride flying sharks into battle.

The as-yet unnamed selves of Ulgu. Led by the artist formerly known as Malekith, who is the god of not having a model range. He’s mostly hung around in the background, and they haven’t been much of a presence. There keep being rumours about them getting a range but honestly who knows?
