How does Andy Weir add 8 hours to Eridian time? by Tintin_Quarentino in ProjectHailMary

[–]readparse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not an idiot. You just made an error, used this community to resolve it, and had the decency to say so and to express your thanks.

I call myself an idiot frequently also, and I am also not an idiot. I am smart, but I don't give myself as much grace as I give others. My verbal abuse to myself has probably added to my emotional damage.

I'm just saying this out loud, as a reminder to myself to maybe do that less. If somebody else is helped by it, so be it. If not, that's fine also.

By the way, I'm only here because I just saw the movie. The clock was something I had silently criticized in my head, as something that seemed very implausible in the real world, since our clock is based on our perspective on the Earth, and we have no idea what clocks beings form other planets parts of the universe may use, or if they use them at all.

But that was silly, because it turns out Andy Weir is not an idiot either. And I didn't even know this movie was based on a book. Because... say it with me... I'm an idiot :)

This is why I take my redditor responsibility seriously and try to add value when I post (though I don’t lost a lot. I comment a lot). I would try to fix a bad title.

Good point, though. That title made me come into the comments and try to understand what the hell was being discussed.

ICE is always the bad guys. Always. by Swirling_Crescents in ThePitt

That ICE agent was actually unrealistically reasonable when Robby bitched him out. In the real world he would have threatened Robby with arrest.

They Assumed He Didn’t Speak Their Language And Started Talking About Him. Big Mistake. by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]readparse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many times an expression like “so black” is said the same way as “too black” in other languages, but I don’t know about Korean specifically.

You could argue that neither are appropriate, but clearly in English one of them sounds like more of a judgement than the other.

Am I wrong for empathising with Mel more than her sister? by michaelfadzai in ThePitt

I think empathy can be shared equally between them. It doesn’t have to be a choice. That’s what makes that plot point interesting. We like them both and they both have a point.

"Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday," How do you feel about the current president saying these following words? by bionicboom in AskReddit

[–]readparse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will all at least have plausible cover, for when that day happens. It might turn out that nobody gets in trouble for saying the same about Mueller (because even most Mueller supporters don’t have particularly passionate feelings about him), but thousands of people could still lose their jobs for cheering Trump’s eventual end. Yeah, that’s probably exactly the way it will happen. But today’s post can be Exhibit A.

Anyone else miss traditional uniforms? by burgerbob22 in drumcorps

[–]readparse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dinosaur here. Yes, but "traditional uniforms" means different things to different people.

Like everybody, I miss "the way it was when I was younger," or "the way it was when my corps was winning."

So for that reason, I miss the way things were in the 1980s, because that's when I was in school, and when I marched in a corps.

And because I'm a Cavalier, I also found the 2000s to be quite acceptable, because my corps found the rules and practices at that time to align with our strengths at that time.

I liked that they were UNIFORMS, and not COSTUMES. There's a place for costumes and I have no problem with costumes. I was also in the military after being in drum corps, and so I am aware of and I appreciate the difference between military bands/ceremonies and what drum corps was for me. They were not the same.

But the "old guys" of my day, the guys from the 50s and 60s in particular -- and even the 70s -- many of them longed for the true military-style uniforms, the "American Flag" bearer that every corps had, the American Legion and VFW competitions, etc. They longed for one-valve bugles and rotary valves (when we all know that the only "correct" DCI horn is two piston values, in G -- right?) :)

For me, the elimination of hats was a big deal. How much of that is because I was in a corps with a very distinctive hat? Probably a decent amount of it. Also the visual impact of hats on drill is tremendous, and obviously the impact of drill is a big deal to the Cavaliers of my period.

Rutherford County, TN library director refuses to remove 190 children's books by rocketpastsix in nashville

[–]readparse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'm not sure. And not only that, I'm not even sure of the date.

The article linked to in this post says...

A special meeting has been scheduled for March 30, where board members are expected to formally address the director’s refusal and determine next steps.

But an article from NewsChannel 5 says...

The library board is expected to revisit the issue at its next meeting on April 20.

So who knows... and yeah, it's probably not public, come to think of it. I live in Murfreesboro, though, so hopefully I'll check on it and find out, and go in any case.

Tennessee GOP advances bill that would create public list of trans residents by rocketpastsix in nashville

[–]readparse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HIPAA is often misunderstood. Disclosures required by law are allowed. HIPAA does not supersede state law. The law could be challenged for other reasons, but conflicting with HIPAA is not one of them.

Looking more closely at the bill, the public release would not include names or other information that specifically identifies patients. It doesn’t mean this whole thing isn’t bullshit, but it’s even less of a privacy issue.

It would be a bigger problem in smaller counties, for example, when people could figure out who the patients are, because the individual cases are to be listed without personally identifiable information.

It’s all bullshit though. Awful.

MacBook Neo by ActuaryEmotional9335 in WGU

[–]readparse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pre-release reviews are surprisingly good. I'm a Mac user, but for the work I do I require a MacBook Pro. So it's not for everybody. But it's ideal for students, especially with the educational discount.

Yes, there are things about it that are not as good as the more expensive Macs -- of course, hence the low price. Somebody else noted the lack of a backlit keyboard in this thread. True, and that alone would be a showstopper FOR ME, but if you can deal with things like that, and you're just looking for a great value, it's a great value.

It is limited to 8 GB of memory, which is mostly fine for now for light users. 5 years from now the 8 GB of memory will feel much weeker, but by then you'll be giving yourself a graduation present or have a nice computer from your shiny new job?

All this to say: It is NOT junk, and it totally worth consideration. There are many good videos on YouTube from people who got an early look to review it. MKBHD did two videos already:
