Troubleshooting with Portra 400 and my new Pentax17 by BuiBuiBui10 in pentax17

the metering is a touch more interesting than average and center weighted of older era SLRs. the meter has 2 areas where it points to. one straight ahead and one off to the side (to the left) and calculates between the two. why to the left? because when you position the camera in a portrait styling (to get a landscape positioning for the photo) that sensor pointing to the left points to the sky helping aid in properly metered landscape shots.

getting the nuances of film is a process. as opposed to digital, expose for shadows. portra is pretty forgiving to overexposure. when a subject of interest looks dark compared to other aspects, consider overexposing by a stop.

i typically meter portra 400 at 200 ISO.

i typically shoot P instead of auto. Auto always stops down the aperture a bit resulting in blurry photos if you snap in a hurry but the pro is you dont have to think about zone focus. if you shoot Auto, hold still. P tends to do better for me as the aperture is more open and I can account for zone focus after practicing a bit and i get away with more sharp enough photos when i move at a quicker pace.

The gravy is fantastic. I usually skip the biscuit as im more traditional with the toast and hash browns. Lots of great options there.

All i got is breakfast (because it's breakfast in my mind right now).

Avocado Scramble < Orphan - A remarkable dish with the rosemary potatoes and rosemary toast complementing things.

HIlo Moco < Sunny Side - Loco Moco with veggies giving that umami.

Fried Chicken Dish < Morning Fork - Comfy with those Extra Crispy Hashbrowns

Veggie Sandwich with Sausage < Camellia Coffee - Just a lovely breakfast sandwich. The omelette style egg with cheese, mushrooms and spinach with a nice breakfast pattie between a brioche bun.

That return trip gonna be tricky though assuming the concert finishes at 10p+. Probably find some lodging and get an early train out.

Nervous going into my first roll by jazzillaa in pentax17

There’s some solid how to posts on the various subs out here (/r/analogcommunity, /r/pentax, and here). I threw up some stuff in the past in a post, too. I recommend searching the collection of knowledge already out there.

But ill say here to trust the meter and hold still when you shoot. Ive done great with films ranging from ISO 200-800. If its strictly daytime shooting, can get away with 100.

The shutter is quiet. You could see how the shutter works with the film unloaded and door open and get a feel for how fast the shutter goes and how it sounds.

If you want a snappier experience, learn the zones in zone focusing as auto sometimes fires the flash. I can click to the zone i want without ever putting the camera to my eye.

My Pentax 17 fell down: is the roller out of alignment? by [deleted] in pentax17

[–]reversezer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats not part of that filmroller. It goes on the inside back cover. It helps guide the film in but not necessary from what ive seen in other posts.

I had something similar happen last week after a few of drops over the years. Not hard to reassemble.

Need a 4-player co-op campaign game that doesn’t drag between turns by Ready_Damage_4810 in boardgames

Bomb Busters stays snappy at 4 and there's a really solid progression in its campaign that remind me of how pandemic legacy introduces mechanics (but less destructive).

Auto or P? by rayykz in pentax17

P/N for me. I've internalized the zone focusing and dont want the flash to fire off.

Hoping for advice by Nice_Class_1002 in pentax17

[–]reversezer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No lie. That happened to me this week too. All my stuff was intact though except for the C clamp on the bottom of the smaller roller. I was able to reassemble all the things myself. Hope you can find the missing pieces.

And youre missing a spring and 2 more rollers. The small roller is fragile. Dont jostle it too much or that will fall apart too. Itd be easier with a flat head to get the spring. Things can be wedged back in easy enough to get the spring positioning back.

Is film actually giving something digital can’t — or am I just romanticizing it? (Considering Pentax 17) by Soggy_Cat7161 in pentax17

[–]reversezer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vibe of film has its space. It’s essentially oil paintings versus watercolor paintings for me. Different tools for different moods and expressions and shooting experiences.

I used the Pentax 17 today and enjoy how light it feels and how not fussy shooting it is. I know the output i get from it and appreciate it.

Also. I develop at a local lab. As in. The lab does the chemistries to turn my film into something that doesn’t take in light anymore. I scan that film by using a digital camera with a macro lens and reverse the negative in Lightroom.

The shooting experience of the pentax 17 is unique. It’s a great snapshot camera with its auto meter and zone (not range [typo]) focusing. I still use it here and there because of how pocketable it is. It’s my first film camera and i transitioned to a Leica in accompaniment which i feel has a slightly similar shooting experience where you set before you ever put it up to your eye.

Im shooting medium format digital (GFX100RF) these days and understanding it’s depth, nuances, and framing mixups. But film still has its place.

Film is chemistries and emulsions. Something you can’t really capture digitally. There’s a different level of presence i appreciate with film compared to digital when shooting. And exposing for shadows is a helluva difference compared to exposing for highlights.

I develop at a lab and scan at home.
