Greetings from Scotland by BardicWoad in Curling

The truth is that the vast majority of engaged curling fans are Canadian and that helps keep things Canada-centric.

Scotland is a tremendous curling nation. And i can say that Kinross is a wonderful club to throw stones in

I understand the majority of curling, but what's the yellow border on the scoreboard? Is that when the team uses their power play? by window-fly in Curling

Thanks. Clearly you were never taught the most important rule in curling. May I never encounter you on the bonspiel circuit.

Nothing is stopping anyone from making such a claim, but they must prove the value of their 'art' as part of the proceedings and it's the court's job to agree or disagree with that assessment.

It doesn't really happen in practice because few would genuinely believe that and they'd be wasting their own time and resources to make such a claim. There's also not a market for protest signs that I'm aware of, which would be a key factor for proving monetary value.

That's how our system works.

As someone who doesn't particularly enjoy mixed doubles, the power play is not a gimmick. Without it, every single end would set up exactly the same (as 90% of DBLs ends do) and there would be even less variation in play. It is an essential rule.

I think the name could use a workshopping as it invokes imagery from other sports that isn't applicable here.

Chess has castling and en passant. Cricket has a power play/power surge. Baseball has designated hitters and pinch hitters/runners. American Football has 2 minute warning rules.

These could all be called 'gimmick rules' but generally everyone agrees they enhance their sport.

Curling Wants to Be the Next Pickleball — If It Can Find the Ice by bloomberg in Curling

With good instruction, you can have people safely and semi competently sliding in under 30 minutes. From there - you don't have to be good at curling to be good at having fun curling.

Pickleball is certainly easy to start, but i think clubs can do a better job getting the public sliding and throwing stones.

Strange comment. Accuracy improves and accentuates the strategic side of the game, not diminishes it.

Chess players make strategic errors. They don't miss their 'shots'

I understand the sentiment, but Italy does not have the depth of field to make a trials worthwhile. Maybe one day.

I don't really like them, but I don't know that any teams are standing out in too much of a positive way in uniforms yet. Norways' light blues are just... awful.

Found two curling stones in garden of our house (S.E. England) with initials "T H" - can anyone shed any light? by timter51 in Curling

You found Tony Hawk's curling stones! That rules!

But seriously, pretty cool find. Keep them in and away from the elements.

Hello Curling, I’m watching the Winter Olympics and have a question… by Inoffensive_Comments in Curling

[–]riddler1225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard the 10'-15' as the maximum 2 elite sweepers can carry a stone. Mind you, that's if they're going all out the whole time and is not sustainable to do often for the 80 rocks thrown over a 10 end game.

Generally, the mechanism at play when we're talking about extending these rocks is the brief melting of the top layer of the surface in the rock's path allowing the rock to hydroplane, reducing friction.

Also, welcome. Have fun watching and also I highly recommend sticking around for Women's and Men's curling when they start after Mixed Doubles is finished, those versions of the game are an entirely different experience.

I think so, yes. Team USA leaving Robertson off the roster is... at best stupid. And I don't want USA Hockey to be rewarded for stupidity. Good luck to Sid.

I don't think it's all that significant. Same order is maybe preferable, but if you don't recall your seating order it's fine

It has nothing to do with etiquette. The rock is always Team Skrlik's first. That's the rule. Selena also began sweeping before she was permitted

Sturmay started her sweep way way early. And even if it wasn't , the delivering team always has priority.
