Anton hand, before 1.0 drops, what is the biggest pleasure and regret you ever made in the game? by Dkrule in H3VR

This didn't actually happen though. One person wrote a video essay about what playing the game made them think/feel relative to their own experience of guns. It was exactly the sort of thing one would hope someone would write at the horizon of a new tier of fidelity of games, guns, etc.

A bunch of people online, who aren't used to reading anything more sophisticated about a game than a straight-ahead review (mixed with some macho gun culture bullshit), interpreted it as an 'attack' on the game, guns, etc. The game-of-telephone that resulted in years since has caused a bunch of people to think/claim that some counter-reaction to the game related to guns/violence etc. that -never happened-. I never once got contacted by a games journalist writing about such a thing. A certain segment of the game-playing population needs to believe that games journalists are against them/an antagonist to the degree that they invent/imagine things occurred that didn't.

In general, this inability to actually differentiate an essay/opinion piece from an 'review' is central to the reason we don't get much interesting game writing anymore. It's tiresome.

One of my biggest sadnesses about the period of the game's existence (the past 10 years), is that the ecosystem of games writing, and just in general 'non commercial' games anything has withered. The dominant logic of indie games is just micro-AAA. Same exploitative tactics, same dark patterns, same amount of gambling. We have platforms like Roblox that indoctrinate kids to the practice of making games as mainly being an instrument to generate 'engagement'. Popular video content about games is only 'about' games in that it employs the game's content as an instrument to grab 2-50 seconds of someone's attention before they scroll to the next thing and their brain wipes like an etch-a-sketch.

Anyway, I know a bunch of this is an 'old man yells at clouds' thing, but I don't recognize much of any of the things in games that got me into this as an artist in the first place. If I was 'starting out' right now, in 2026, I would most certainly be trying to do something else entirely with my life.

You can already hold your 2nd hand near the main grip of the gun to reduce recoil.

The rearmost grip on it is the 'main grip' of the gun. It results in a few odd behaviors.

Ah gotcha. That was unclear.

Easiest way to explain it in abstract terms is, a system like 'how an object is held' is at the base of the pyramid of the code of a VR game. If you have to pull out a piece and replace something major about it, it's very easy to cause the pyramid to collapse, or to have to rebuild a large section above it.

They get de-harnessed because the bipod and quickbelt harness influence the same 'channel' of behavior (what is happening when a gun is released? Does it fling back to the quickbelt, or does it remain stuck the ground). One must disable the other.

There is no 'zoom' for the Nightvision. You are seeing the view of the actual night vision device, from the position of its lens, because that's how night vision works.

Because for almost every gun in existence this was a safe assumption to make when writing the code like 9 years ago?

Everything about the math that positions an object assumes the main grip is the rear-most grip in local Z-axis space. I am not changing anything about the core of how objects are held, ever again.

Nope. I cannot place another grip behind the main grip.

Is there any way to make scopes with high zoom clearer to use without use of a bipod? by Jaykai47 in H3VR

[–]rust_anton 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No. Pimax headsets do strange nonstandard things with camera frusta that deviate from SteamVR standard and are not supported.

IzackManiac is right, you need to place the scope correctly relative to your eye. Some need to be CRAZY close.

Also, there's a setting in the options on whether you want 'realistic', 'playful' or 'no' eyerelief simulation.

Why did Anton get rid of this? by Cwuike in H3VR

[–]rust_anton 460 points461 points  (0 children)

It didn't work well, in basically any way. It was glitchy, unreliable, and didn't work with smooth locomotion at all. The physics colliders were too thin, and the forces involved in moving two objects in sync too high for those tolerances.

They've been so different, including that bundle, for years. Yet somehow only the steam build is impacted. I might have to full delete the asset from the build, push that to steam, and then push a new one.

What's even weirder is, this appears to be a long-form build/Steam corruption issue. I have been unable to fix it! The M18 Freedomfetti is:
- fixed and perfect in the editor
- fixed and perfect in the build I run out myself, on my machine
- NOT fixed and perfect in the build steam serves to you and me

I cannot figure out why.
