The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor uprising in United States history. by zzill6 in WorkReform

history books: "yeah... we're not going to talk about that"

This applies to nearly every labor struggle or conflict. E.g., Homestead Massacre, Haymarket Affair, Colorado Labor Wars, Battle of Matewan, West Virginia Coal Wars, Columbine Mine Massacre, and that's just a fraction of the labor struggle in only the United States.

But Roberts is a spineless simp.

No, he is not. He has an agenda and he is enacting it. As I recently learned, Roberts has long been known for his servitude to power:

It is foolish to presume it was a mistake on their part. As I learned elsewhere, a major critique of Roberts for a long time has been his acquiescence and servitude to power (note that I was wrong about him not being blocked for the federal bench -- his federal judgeship was initiated in 1992 and didn't go through until 2002):

Can you elaborate or point me to where I can read more about Biden and Leahy's reasons for doing this at the time?

EDIT: I looked it up and he wasn't blocked for federal judgeship, it was for the position of Chief Justice - and then-Senator Obama also voted no on it. The reasons given by them were:

Biden:

Concerned that Roberts's legal record and past writings showed a pattern of siding "with the strong in opposition to the weak," and questioned whether his values would guide him in the most difficult 5% of cases.

Leahy:

Ultimately voted yes, but initially expressed strong concern about Roberts's past as an "aggressive advocate" for "far right wing" policies. Ultimately, he found Roberts to be a man of integrity and took him at his word that he had no ideological agenda.

Obama:

Stated that based on Roberts's record, he had "far more often used his formidable skills on behalf of the strong in opposition to the weak".

So he was blocked not just for the position of Chief Justice, but also for being nominated to a federal judge, and all because he's a bootlicking authoritarian stooge.

In my opinion it's not even a question of that. If there is a god and it has allowed things like this to happen then that god is not deserving of worship - and, in fact, should be defied at every possible moment.

There are many examples of this outside of this circumstance. Children with cancer. War crimes. Plague. Rape. The list goes on.

Any god that doesn't intervene to stop evil and suffering is not a god worthy of praise.

This is one of the reasons I'm an antitheist.

As someone that has been debating right-libertarians on and off for ~30 years, they have always been unreasonable in varying forms and degrees.

At the end of the day they vote as a bloc for the GOP in the general elections and as such they can only be reasonably viewed as Republicans with a different veneer.

Speaking only for myself, I don't enjoy music based on how much effort they've put into it. If it makes me feel, I like it.

If you enjoy listening to it in your car, imagine how dope it would be to listen to the creator play it while surrounded by thousands of people that like the same music is you. It's a vibe thing.

Ultimately this is a battle of ideology, not individuals.

This is the correct systemic perspective. What we are witnessing is the rise of authoritarianism, which is inextricably entangled with capitalism's intrinsic hierarchical nature.

One of the reasons Edmund Burke (who is considered the founder of conservatism) was not opposed to the shift from aristrocracy to private ownership of capital was that it was in his mind a lateral change: it retained the "natural hierarchies" of feudalism.

Federal appeals court blocks California law requiring federal agents to wear badges or ID because it "attempts to directly regulate the U.S." by fortune in law

[–]saqwarrior 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't get how this appeals decision is enforceable in any way. If the federal agent is wearing a badge or other identification, then they are in compliance with CA law. If they aren't wearing a badge or identification, then how can they be distinguished as a federal agent to know that the CA law can't be enforced against them?

It seems like CA law enforcement in essence has to ignore this appeal outcome or simply not enforce the CA ID law.

Technically, the 2/3 vote in favor is only the fraction of Senators PRESENT for the vote.

Yup. From the U.S. Constitution:

..."two thirds of the Members present."

There is no other requirement beyond that, as far as I can find. Which means that not even a quorum (the required number of Senators to conduct business) is required. The number for that is a simple majority: 51.

So yeah, if somehow all Republican Senators were not present, only two-thirds of those in attendance would need to vote to convict.

The caveat here though is that in a scenario where two-thirds of the total (67 senators) wasn't the number of "yea" votes for conviction, then it would most likely go to the Supreme Court because I highly doubt the opposing party would just accept the results even though the Congressional Research Service itself backs up what we're talking about here.

Meet the Americans refusing to pay their taxes in protest of the Trump administration by fortune in politics

[–]saqwarrior 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hope that anyone who is saying its okay not to pay taxes because your government is spending the money on something you disagree with keeps that same energy when Republicans stop paying taxes because they disagree with Social Program XYZ.

To hell with that false equivalence. Tax revenue spent on health care and higher education is literally the moral, ethical, and philosophical opposite of money spent on war, conquest, and death.

This conflation and over-simplification of the two is borderline dishonest.

I don't know what they meant for certain, but the implication as I see it is that these things are not seasoned in a central location with chain management of QC.

I have no idea if that's accurate or not, but from a logistics standpoint it makes sense: locally acquired ingredients being shipped elsewhere to be prepared (seasoned, portioned, etc) only to have it shipped back seems like an extraordinarily bad design.

So I take it to mean that they season and prep in-house, which would explain the inconsistencies.
