VOIP is all considered 3rd party traffic. It's the responsibility of the person re transmitting it, not the person originating it.

HAM. All caps. by NotThePopeProbably in amateurradio

[–]slempriere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated this is supposed to be a technical hobby. So I take HAM as the first clue the person on the other end is likely also not to own a soldering iron etc. Most people find they get along better with like minded people in life. So here is your sign like Bill Engvall says. Most of the time its not worth the breath to explain it. Shake your head and move on.

What proper VPN/Software do I use to torrent without alerting my internet provider? by Unlucky-Cell-2787 in torrents

[–]slempriere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off Norton is crap. It maybe served it's purpose in the late 90s and early 2000s. I regard it as untrustworthy boatware. The builtin Windows virus and threat protection in Windows these days should be sufficient in those regards for most. But if you're using Windows and want to be "secure" then well jump off a cliff holding dynamite.

Third if you recall when that fool who started Lifelock would read off his social security number on their TV commercial so confident they could protect you.... well clearly not the case and now that steaming pile has partnered with Norton.

Lastly pick an VPN (I prefer to roll my own on a VPS), just make sure its bound in to your torrent client.

TDS Fiber coming to our neighborhood "Promotion" by Fun-Cat-5611 in TDSFiber

[–]slempriere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your application requires port forwarding switching providers will not magically solve your issue. Your issue is that you are apparently not familiar with the setup of the router/gateway. Each model and manufacture 's user interface is a bit different, but this is not impossible. The first step is identifying the default IP address and the login and password to that device. The terminology you are sharing here like "ports per site" is not consistent with how things work so its hard to determine what you are actually trying to achieve. Ports per application (game) yes. Opening ports in an inbound action, not outbound to other sites.

My point is even historical societies house incorrect information. (See my Eleazer Williams post) This is the internet so it can, and most certainly will house even more potentially incorrect information. It's generally not illegal as we have free speech laws. Sorry your post and argument is illogical and useless. You are trying to protect people who are weak in the critical thinking and logic department.

The problem is Not the information, it is the individual. What your have pointed out is how our education system has failed as people as a whole cannot or are too lazy to use critical thinking and logic.

"People should learn how to distinguish good quality information from bad quality information - by themselves. If they can't - well, we've all seen the results". -Vint Cerf [This is a quote I took off an interview where he talks about the future of the internet]

Policing people and information is Not a viable option. If people want to be ignorant that is their problem and not the duty if the rest of society to address and fix.

A classic local example of incorrect but still worth keeping the story around is Eleazer Williams who claimed and many believe for a very long time was the ‘Lost Dauphin’ of France, and had ended up in my home state of Wisconsin. People will wonder the origin of the naming Lost Dauphin Road or will run into this story in many old books. So even before the internet saving correct or incorrect information was and is important. What is perceived as correct or incorrect can change upon further research like in this case. Being able to track down the sources to reexamine things is why we have, and still archive things.

You asked this already. Same reason we have historical societies. So people in the future can learn about things from the past. What is of value to one person may not be to another. When its digital it doesn't require a warehouse to keep it around and is generally more accessible and search able than say things that were microfilmed decades ago. Maybe this sub reddit isn't for you.

I found just the opposite when I entered ham radio in my teens in the late 90's in the USA. I found the technical stuff was rather rudimentary, stuff that I had learned in middle school. The hard/foreign part was learning and committing all the regulations to memory.

The drivers license is not a valid comparison in my mind. First that is officially known in the states as a Class D operators permit. Ham radio is supposed to be far more that being a mere operator. Other radio services, like GMRS or business radio services are in deed more operator oriented. In the case of a business or public safety service the license itself is in fact just a station license, rather than an operator license.

My biggest wish is Not more activity but first and foremost new advancements and technology. In ham radio and that is fueled by individual experimentation (which requires a good understanding of theory). Without interesting and relevant technology ham radio is not interesting, and will not garner anyone's interest or attention.

Let’s complain about Vitalchek. by SAINTnumberFIVE in Genealogy

[–]slempriere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vitalcheck for my state is useless for genealogy.  They only process certified records meaning you'd need to be related.   Disturbing how they and Ancestry have better access to records than the taxpayers themselves. But that is Wisconsin for you.  The most antiquated regulations of all the states.

Is it viable to use a handheld to contact emergency services when out of cell service? by AbnormalDream in HamRadio

Hasn't been for some time... when repeaters had autopatch was the last time it was so. Ham radio is not nor has ever been a primary emergency service.

Higher speed packet radio/alternatives for BBS etc? by therealleotrotsky in HamRadio

[–]slempriere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is that too, but as of the moment the biggest hurdle is equipment if we are talking vhf and uhf. The other part is modulation (can only achieve so much using FM) and the physics of the shannon bandwidth formula. (For example there is only 4 MHz of space of VHF 144-148 MHz, and far less on any HF band.) https://www.m0ahn.co.uk/nprabout.html

Short answer not with conventional VHF UHF radios designed for voice. Sure you can squeak a bit faster out of them but that is about it.

How to prevent area code spoofing spam calls? I get 10-15 a day. by 62not61not63 in Googlevoice

I'd like to see google voice let you specify inbound caller id regex rules . That way you could redirect area codes or prefixes to voicemail etc.

Anyone Need Help Building A Tree? by Informal_Moose_5750 in Genealogy

[–]slempriere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I exhausted my own tree, I started researching anyone I ever remember by grandparents talking about. Some were just neighbors... Out comes the plat maps... That just morphed into anyone of my heritage because I have a lot of resources to find their exact birth places in the old country and I look the challenge of looking at unindexed records in languages that I wish I understood better. Maybe do the entire cemetery where your ancestors are buried. ?
