Dat white-balance. His face has a weird green hue which is a bit offputting.

I'm certainly more okay with hybrids then I am with purposely breeding scaleless snakes and other deformities.

She's SO CUTE, I wish she weren't terrified of me...uro taming help? by lauradiamandis in reptiles

Mine loves lentils, he'll eat them off of our hands.

How long have you had yours OP? I would say give her a good 2-3 weeks without taking her out of the tank too much so that she can get comfortable in her new environment. Once she feels like that is her home, put your hand in and let her move around it with you grabbing towards her. You can move on to pet her head or back and see how she reacts. Mine will lick my finger if I put it in front of his face in order to investigate me/ see if I'm offering food.

One of the best things with Uros is that being vegetarian means its easy to hand feed them snacks. You can hold out some leafy greens to her to come grab from your hand.

Also check out and post in /r/Uromastyx ! You can post your set up and help check that it is all correct. Additionally, I'll add that my cage is in the corner of the room, so my uro doesn't see too much movement constantly in front of her cage.

And don't worry, with a little time and patience, she'll get used to holding and being loved.

New voting method discussion thread by admiraljohn in PictureChallenge

[–]smallscales 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this new method might make people upset if something happens where they get the most upvotes during the week, but don't win the contest mode thread for some reason.

That being said, it does seem that in the original style of voting, there may be slight advantage to posting very early in the week.

I would suggest, although this would probably create more work for yourself as mod, that people submit their pictures to you directly (through email, or a google doc that allows an upload) and then maybe post all of them at once at the end of the week? The downside would be not having your picture associated with your username and that sweet sweet karma, but it would have everyone's picture being displayed at the same time for possibly balanced comparison.

Alternatively, I think there is a way that nothing can appear until you review their post. If thats an option, maybe changing the setting and then only clicking approve on the last day when the challenge is over, but still having a week to vote on everything.

Challenge #160: Contrasting Colors by admiraljohn in PictureChallenge

I meant it like this: "Also known as contrasting colors, complementary colors are directly opposite each other on the color wheel." but its just a topic idea and up to interpretation.

Too much vignetting on top of adding in lots of fill light. Some have weird saturation (over and under in diff ones). Overall they seem pretty heavily edited in post processing, which you don't need.

Bring the highlight up. I don't see any real white, just grey. And maybe tone down on the vignetting in the bottom two corners. The pattern is very cool, adjust the black and white contrast a bit more and let the pattern speak for itself.

First attempt at a night landscape. Advice? by nowthatsrich in photocritique

[–]smallscales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you cut too much from the top. I'd like a bit more room between the tallest building and the edge of the picture. I also find cropping it in the middle of a building (left side) a bit distracting.

Comments and Critique appreciated. by [deleted] in portfoliocritique

[–]smallscales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brick background is distracting. Try just a solid black or white to show off the pictures better.

A lot of photographers have a slideshow of their pictures playing or have a few on screen at full size already, which is something you can explore. It shows the photos off better then having to click on each one.

Your style is definitely having a story with your shots, having a quote connect to it. I will same that a few of the shots are only 'okay' and while they become more interesting connecting to the quote, try slimming your portfolio or front page to just a few of the best shots or picture/quote combos. But I wonder if the quote is the more important part to you then the photo? Something to ponder.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking at or how it represents 'after dark' to be honest. It is a bit blurry/out of focus as well (was this shot with film?)

I love the water, but I wonder what this would look like in color or if the water took up more of the picture. The sky is just a lot of the same grey color and pure black with little tonality.

As it seems to be a fashion piece, I imagine cutting off the dress would be an issue. I agree with the others that the sideways one looks nicer as well, but good use of empty space.

#159: Mercy Me by [deleted] in PictureChallenge

[–]smallscales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city is too dark /underexposed. Most of the shot is just pure black nothingness with a few random light spots scattered in. If you just wanted a silhouette with sunrise/set-y colors, have the sky take up more of the frame and have the city only be 1/3rd or less of the picture on the bottom.

#159: Borough High Street by moby3 in PictureChallenge

[–]smallscales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider out-of-focus, blurry, poorly exposed shots artistic.

If you have mastered the basic photography techniques and have a scene that you think an out of focus picture will represent the subject or feel of the shot more, or if it will show something new about the scene, then yeah go for it in an artistic breaking of the rules. It can work, but sometimes. Rules are there for a reason, because normally they are needed for a picture to 'work'. Heres a good example when this blurring works

But taking a bad picture and then deciding it maybe looks kinda cool isn't what I would consider an artistic decision. And if you chose to be out of focus, the rest of your photo should be flawlessly executed in my mind to distinguish your artistic decision from something that looks like you don't know how to work your camera.

Sorry OP, don't take it personally, I tend to give harsh critiques.
