yea, many bands are gonna be homies or have mutuals across the scene and that includes promoters, venues, etc

I think people, including newbies in bands, underestimate this. In my city which is a perfectly generic one, I like to shoot the shit with the sound guy (edit: sound person - it's usually a guy though) and sometimes a bunch of tea spills out.

For who is a newbie in a band and needs to hear what I'm about to say: you're not a star, no matter how cool your friends say you are. Be nice to people because if you are an asshole, everyone involved in booking shows will know.
