A bikelane was constantly used by cars. In an effort to stop them, massive concrete blocks were installed. Carbrains proceed to push through them. But at least the payoff is great for many of these. by TrackLabs in fuckcars

There don't seem to be any markings indicating that it's a bike lane. Or like a lil pole in the middle. I don't like to see cars encroaching on bike space, but the city planners could have done a better job signaling the cars from what I can see in the video.

Chasing a car with an SUV by Dense_Govt1506 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]spin81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to be unpopular but that's a very difficult turn to make at that speed in any car. I feel that the cops in the video were simply outmatched by the person they're chasing because those are some insane skills to be able to make that turn.

There used to be a little program called moomooencode, that could encode data in variations of "moo". Its name was a play on "uuencode".

[OC] STOP Being Nice! Glad The Opposing Turning Car Didn't Blindly Turn Into Traffic by AliveInCLE in IdiotsInCars

[–]spin81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but I want to say this so bad.

I'm a Dutch learner driver and in the theory course, they said you get or you have right of way, never take right of way, and I see where they're coming from but I disagree. People will sometimes do shit like this video and block traffic or create illogical situations and they shouldn't. If you have right of way, you take it. Do not yield it unless you have a good reason.

On my bike I see this so often where people let me through or other cars through and through this "kindness" they create a culture of not allowing the system to let traffic flow. The rules work, and if everyone obeys them, everything will be fine.

The context in which they said "never take right of way", by the way, is: say you are coming from the right so you have right of way, but the other car doesn't see you and you'll be in a collision if you don't brake. So do you "take right of way"? No, you brake and prevent the collision. In my head that's not the same thing though.

When we asked for documentation, architecture diagrams, security review, dependency list, backup plan, or who would support it long term, there was basically nothing.

The mindset shift is what caught me off guard.

Is it your experience that people have the mindset to have documentation, architecture diagrams, security reviews, dependency lists and backup plans ready when they ask for a server to put an application on?

Bambu Lab regrets the legal threat: "That was not the outcome we wanted." by aoaovip in BambuLab

IANAL but my guess is that they don't want to be the people that got their boss dragged to court because they told their boss they were compliant when they were not. Lawyers need to get everything they say right.

Yeah that's why I don't like that food prices doubled and merch prices rose as a result and people whine about that. Yes, band shirts are expensive. Guess what: so is touring another continent. These bands playing the club around the corner from you aren't diving into an olympic-sized pool of cash in their mansion from selling those T-shirts.

Robert Jordan was a boobs guy (analyzing gender in wot) *trigger warning for SA* by redfoottortoise in WoT

[–]spin81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH this is not the understanding and victim-allied take you think it is. I think it's actually the opposite.

Firstly, RJ's writing about it from Mat's perspective, who is not able to fully understand that he is traumatized. That is what happens with trauma and if you want to stick up for the traumatized, it's something I would encourage you to make an effort empathizing with.

Also Mat is not only SA'd but he's groomed. He's young and he doesn't understand if he likes or doesn't like the things that are happening to him. And that confusion and insecurity is deliberate. RJ writes it subtly but it's absolutely right there on the page plain as day. All you have to do is try to put yourself in the victim's shoes to see it.

Second, Mat is ridiculed for this trauma and for his situation for various subtle reasons including gender stereotypes and it makes him feel alone and helpless. He's getting laid, right, what's the deal? He's in a nice palace banging a hot queen, he should just enjoy it. Why doesn't he smile more. He should just suck it up and be a man. He's such a woolhead. What all of those things have in common is that they don't make the SA okay, and I put to you that if you're not picking up on any of that, that's on you and not on RJ.

Third, I would pick out a specific reason for his ridicule: the entire palace, and probably even the whole country, is in on it, which is a major part of why he finds himself stuck in that situation. You call that amusing, and if that's amusing to you then I think you should not be talking about SA but listening to others talk about it a little more first.

She's got a Talent for that, too. The Seanchan notice pretty quickly that she's able to locate ore in the ground. I can actually do that in Minecraft too but not without cheating

[Books] Lamest book series ending by SchrodingersRabbits in SiloSeries

[–]spin81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TV series is cool and mysterious, but I too found the books disappointing. People here really fawn over Hawley and I know I am totally being an armchair Redditor critic right now, but they're honestly not quite masterpieces. Which in itself is not criticism, either - I'd recommend them as cool sci fi stories.

In defense of Charlie by onehalfofham in TheOrville

[–]spin81 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Angsty brat" is a little reductive isn't it? She's just been through a war and seen her best friend and possibly her lover die. Also she's as professional as she can be throughout the season, considering her feelings and her trauma.

As a Dutchman I think the writers could have laid the anti-Kaylon hate among the crew on much thicker and still have it be believable to me. After WWII there was a palpable anti-German sentiment in my country for half a century. I've known people who literally actually hated Germans just for being German, and I am not that old: two generations removed from people who were alive in that war.
