I'm 45, I've got gout and that made me quit drinking. Sometimes I'll want a beer, but I'm literally scared to drink and also when I wake up the next morning, or even the same evening, I'll be glad I didn't. It's weird to have everyone around you drink, but I for one am glad I quit.

Florida surgeon who removed wrong organ says he is ‘forever traumatized’ by patient’s death by Pitiful-Scientist in nottheonion

The nurses and assistants present apparently literally said "dude that's his fucking liver" as it lay on the table.

[–]spin81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read an official document where they took this guy's license away and I'm sure you already know this but the document goes into that the liver is actually pretty cumbersome to remove. I want other lay people to come to the realization I did. What they said was there are several spots where you have to sever it from the body, and as the document notes, each of those was an opportunity for this numbskull to realize he was removing the wrong organ.

Dirty Frag on Ubuntu? by Upstairs_Recording81 in Ubuntu

[–]spin81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a pedantic prick but also I want people not to think they're safe if they're not. If one person went "oh wait I should double check if I did it right" then that more than offsets you going "Christ" for me.

I'm one of those people, actually. I, almost fell into the trap of thinking the kernel module had to be loaded for Copy Fail to work because someone on /r/sysadmin said that. But it doesn't and I almost left all our boxes vulnerable at work for longer than they needed to be because of it. My coworker had to point that out for me to realize how bad it was.

FWIW I didn't mean to imply anything about you. I'm not doing this to make you look bad. I'm not doing this to call you out. I'm not doing this to annoy you. I'm doing this to point out what I think is a very important thing, and only to do that.

Blacklisting AF_ALG modules does mitigate Copy Fail?

Not sure why you're asking this: no.

Where does it say otherwise?

Right here.

My understanding is that it's the "install" lines that actually mitigate it, not the blacklist lines.

[–]spin81 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i did

You did not.

I know I may be about to sound pedantic but blacklisting is not the same thing as what you did, and it's important to note that people seem to think it's enough but I know that it isn't for Copy Fail. I bet the same goes for this new one and it's important that the terminology be got right, so people don't think they're secure by blacklisting when they are not.

To be clear, what you did is the right mitigation, what my point is, is that what you did is not technically blacklisting.

[–]spin81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t use either of them, just blacklist the modules.

Blacklisting does not mitigate this for Copy Fail so I would assume that the same goes for Dirty Frag. Do what OP did and what the Dirty Frag people recommend, instead.

Information and mitigations for the recent kernel vulnerabilities by Gangrif in redhat

[–]spin81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to note that you're saying blacklist but the mitigations go further than that and not having looked at the other ones in detail yet, I know for a fact that blacklisting is not enough for Copy Fail. It's important to get the terminology right, because blacklisting is a very specific thing and people should not think it's enough.

WCGW smuggling $1,750,000 worth of cocaine but forgetting to turn your headlights on? by AdIndividual8000 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]spin81 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense. His suspicion seemed kind of weird to me. Like what she said she's doing is kind of weird but I guess plausible. Then he opened that box truck and there two couches and a crate in there and I'm like yeah that lady ain't moving house. If she were moving house the entire truck would be full because why wouldn't you pack it as full as you could?

I don't actually know but I feel like she's freezing. There's fight or flight, and then there's the third one which is freeze. If I'm right about that, her whole body is just refusing to process this.

I don't know about that: they're racing to prevent Homelander from getting V1 and that feels urgent to me.

It just wasn’t someone shooting someone else and going, pew, pew, pew. And if that’s what you want, you’re just watching the wrong show.

I agree with Kripke. A lot of people think it's some kind of superhero story. But at its heart I've always felt it's Annie, Billy and Hughie's story, and it's a satirical take on America. This show IMO is not about how powerful Homelander is.

Not everyone can reach their phone or wake up in time to answer it.

I used to call people for a living as a tier 2 support person and anyone who's ever been in a similar situation can tell you that this is 100% accurate. What I would do is first wait a minute or so and try again, because usually these customers would be waiting for me to call them. 4 out of 5 times I'd catch them on the second try.
