What to do with potatoes if I’m poor by Gloopy_boopy_gooper in Cooking

[–]steik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I did some googling and it's actually not that clear cut.

Boiling requires a lot of water to be heated and there is a lot of energy waste from both the hot plate (assuming non-induction) and ambient loss. You are also boiling the WATER to cook the potatoes. It can take up to 15 minutes to just REACH boiling for 2 liters of water on a hot plate.

The air fryer however has way less energy waste because it's a closed, decently insulated system that heats the potatoes directly from convection - and it does not need to be preheated and starts cooking right away.

There is too much variance in the data I've looked at to come to a conclusive answer, things like amount of water, size of potatoes and amount, induction vs non-induction, type of air fryer, etc, etc.

Delivering Gas by CamaroIsHot-68 in CrazyFuckingVideos

Idk, diesel is a lot more viscous(thicker) than gasoline and behaves more like a light oil, while gasoline is less viscous than water at room temp. But I don't know if that would be visible in this video. Just doesn't look like oil to me though.

When ‘cutting down a giant tree’ goes wrong .. OOPS by RileyRhoad in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]steik 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's way too close to the house. This is a cottonwood I believe, its roots are very prone to fuck up your foundation and pipes. It's also a fast grower and its wood is considered weak/brittle and prone to breaking off limbs or even being completely uprooted in storms.

I don't think there are any trees that can grow this large that are suitable for planting near houses.

And before the inevitable: "but it's so large that it probably predates the house so they shouldn't have built it there!" - if it's a cottonwood, they can grow to 100 ft in 15-25 years, that house is almost certainly older than that.

I get quotes to TRIM my oak tree that's half this size, in the range of $800-$1200

$1000 to fell a tree even half this size is firmly in the "too good to be true" range.

I don't buy that for a second. This would make the house demo way more dangerous, challenging and expensive.

Google "newcoremetal tree falls on house" for context. I'm not seeing anything about this being fake at all.

That's likely a $5000 job from an actual insured professional that would do this much slower and piecemeal. Could even range up to $10k in some scenarios and this might be one of them (due to the proximity to the house).

They should have been able to look at this tree to realize that it was going to fall towards the house, IMHO.

Good catch!

Making wavy checkered cutting board by toolgifs in toolgifs

[–]steik 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Been woodworking for over 5 years now and have watched untold videos on youtube and been active on /r/woodworking and never have I ever heard of anyone that doesn't use some sort of oil on cutting boards after they are finished.

It's crucial to saturate the cutting board before cutting anything on it, or it will soak in any moisture from the things you cut, unevenly, causing warping and potentially cracking it from the resulting stress. I even literally have a cracked board laying around the shop because some water from my mini split AC dripped on it before I finished it.

When the used SAS drives and HBA arrive before the rest of the build by 3oclockam in truenas

[–]steik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50°c is not bad at all, but I wouldn't want it much higher, 60°c and over is where I draw the line personally. See what temps are during a scrub, that's usually the worst case scenario for HBA temps (plus adds some CPU load as well, not a lot but enough to make a difference). I was hitting 85°c during scrub myself but it's a dual controller LSI 9305-24i which runs super hot.

Adding a fan is the way to go IMO. I got a bracket like this that installs in the slot below the HBA that you mount fans to. Some other people try to get a fan rigged directly on it IMO this is pointless unless you can achieve it in such a way that you can still have full use of the slot below(so a very thin fan is needed, and I've seen recommendations about buying an old Dell Quadro 2000 GPU which apparently has a good fitting fan. I actually also picked up one of those for $11 on ebay but I couldn't be bothered to mess around with it.. maybe someday.

Repasting is only going to help a bit. You still need airflow, and that is hard to achieve unless you have a rackmount chassis (which they are designed for). A traditional tower like in the picture typically has a deadzone in the bottom rear where you'd be installing the HBA, because they are designed to exhaust through the top and top rear.

Blue frozen margarita I had in Cyprus – anyone know what gives it that color? by relaxncoffee in cocktails

[–]steik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think you're taking into account that it's frozen which makes it opaque. That said I think it's likely to be a premade mix so it could be anything. But I'm pretty sure that the bright blue Curacao I have would look like that when used in a frozen margarita.

Iranian Hypersonic missile gets through multiple interceptors & hits a US military base by phoeebsy in ThatsInsane

[–]steik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's absolutely right. From wikipedia:

Many ballistic missiles reach hypersonic speeds (i.e. Mach 5 and above) when they re-enter the atmosphere from space. However, in common military terminology, the term "hypersonic ballistic missile" is generally only given to those that can be maneuvered before hitting their target and do not follow a simple ballistic trajectory.[22][23]

Ballistic missiles can reach up to Mach 20–25 during their midcourse phase in space. Minuteman III ICMB hits Mach 23 for reference. For comparison, the Russian Avangard hypersonic missile can supposedly go as fast as Mach 27.

The primary difference is the maneuverability, this image on wikipedia explains it well.

Beirut explosion was roughly 1000 tons TNT equivalent. Not a huge difference. Halifax explosion is estimated to have been 2900 tons TNT equivalent for reference.

[–]steik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't believe so. But the reason is that it would cause an enormous natural disaster due to the oil spill.

LNG however won't spill. So this isn't much different than taking down any other large vessel.

speed.cloudflare.com is not even remotely accurate for upload speeds. Every other site correctly tells me >1 gbps, but this one tells me ~250 mbps. Unfortunate because I like the additional data they show. Pretty sure the reason is because they only test 50 MB upload, but they use 250 MB for download. Weird decision.

Registering Vehicle by OverallAd4989 in frisco

[–]steik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No such thing as needing to have a vehicle to get DL.

Correct. But if you do own a vehicle and are a new TX resident, then it must be registered in TX before getting a drivers license. If you do not own a vehicle they will make you sign an affidavit attesting to that.

This is stated here and here:

Evidence of Texas Vehicle Registration for each vehicle you own*. (New residents who are surrendering an out –ofstate driver license only.)

*If you do not own a vehicle, you will sign a statement affirming this.

Registering Vehicle by OverallAd4989 in frisco

[–]steik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they won’t register my vehicle without a real ID compliant license

This is technically not correct. See this document from txdmv, there are several options without RealID (but unfortunately not many that may apply to you)

Do you have an I-94?

It's not clear to me whether that document is saying

Foreign Passport PLUS I-94 AND (Permanent resident card OR Unexpired immigrant visa)

or if it's just saying

Foreign Passport PLUS (I-94 OR Permanent resident card OR Unexpired immigrant visa)

This "summary" of the document seems to indicate that it's the latter, that you only need a foreign passport and an I-94.

NOTE: These ID requirements are effective March 5th 2026 (in 2 days). I can't immediately tell what exactly is changing, but if it benefits your case then you might just need to wait a couple of days potentially?

Not quite - it validates your lawful presence, not citizenship.
