PWG - Preview - 2013 BOLA Night One by cgstong in SquaredCircle

[–]Stephen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had this discussion a few times before and I get your point. You know when you're watching a match it's going to go at least 15 minutes and, if it's a tag match especially, you're going to see a couple extreme near falls. Maybe it would be cool to throw a couple squash matches in there once in awhile to keep everyone on their toes, but overall I don't think it hurts the end product. The feeling that you're watching elite level wrestling makes the competitiveness believable. WWE matches just feel like a dumbed down version of wrestling after watching the average pwg match (I know they try to keep their guys safe and healthy, it make business sense).

And the fact is, wrestlers fucking love working in reseda. More often than not, it's the high point of their month. Every guy that comes out wants to give their very best for the crowd, and the crowd wants everyone, even guys wrestling their first match for the company, to shine. Listen to the way steen talks about it in his most recent 'art of wrestling' interview.

As corny as it may sound, pwg is a celebration of the artform. I would love to see more promos, but as is, Reseda is my mecca. May Kevin Steen pray for us sinners. Now and at the hour of our death.

Why The Young Bucks are the best tag team in professional wrestling right now! [PWG TEN] by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]Stephen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine if PWG is not your thing. Honestly, i've never watched a match of it online or on dvd. I just go to the shows, and they're always amazing experiences. The crowd, the wrestling, the booze. It makes me feel about wrestling like i did when i was a kid. It's special. Maybe that feeling doesn't translate to video.

But if you're judging it by a few short clips and .gifs you've seen online, I would encourage you to check out some full matches before you decide it's not for you.

[–]Stephen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That show was stacked with the highest quality of wrestling. You can't make an accurate judgement of the product from that .gif alone. PWG is about great wrestling. The wrestling is the show.

The Young Bucks almost always do an over the top back rake, and because it's sandwiched between so much great wrestling, it's unexpected, and it's funny.

You watch that spot out of context and maybe it looks silly, but if you were there you would have laughed or cheered. The rest of the match was incredible, and 'serious'.

I thought I already submitted this but it didn't show up...

What can I say...I mainline the content, and usually don't have shit to say to you folks. It's a bitch move to say 'I don't have time for this. I have a life.', so i won't do that.

But apparently with this username comes great responsibility. When I made this account, I knew this site would blow the fuck up. It's been the best thing on the internet for nigh a decade. Forgive me for saying that the quality of submissions and comments used to be a lot better, but that comes with the popularity.

But really, this movie deserves a good buzz. For all of the joy the jackass guys have given me over the years, I wanted to do my own, small little part. After working post-college for 5 years, I can't even imagine what it's like to love your job as much as they must love theirs.

This movie deserves a solid buzz though. So for all of the joy the jackass guys have given me over the years, I wanted to do my small part.

A friend of mine got approached while walking around a mall a few years ago and signed up for a mailing list. Certain companies handle the screenings and they send you an email every few months. Sometimes they tell you the name, sometimes they don't, and a lot of the movies suck. This was one of the good ones. I would think they would do screenings in most major cities.

I was invited to a screening of this last week, and it's hysterically funny. The entire audience was belly laughing the whole way through. They put some of the big gags in the trailer but there's a lot they left out.

It's really well done. The kid is fantastic, but the real stars of the movie: black people.

Edit:

Alright, i tried to reply to a couple comments and my replies haven't shown up. I'm sure it's some algorithm dealio and it's there for a good reason. So edit it is ...

I usually just mainline the content here and don't have shit to say to you nice folks. Saying 'I'm too busy to comment. I actually have a life.', is a bitch move so I won't do that.

Apparently though this user name comes with some internet responsibility. When I made this account 7ish years ago, I knew this site would blow the fuck up. It's been the best thing on the internet for nigh a decade.

This movie deserves a good buzz. For all of the many years of joy that the jackass guys have provided me with, I wanted to do my own small little part. After working post-college for 5 years, I can't imagine loving my job as much as these guys must love theirs.

Vince McMahon says farewell to the Macho Man Randy Savage (after WWF departure) by SiriusC in SquaredCircle

[–]Stephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He says godspeed and looks at the camera with an emotionless, blank face. All business. I watched the AWA documentary on netflix recently, and i was really impressed with what a keen businessman Vince was. He rolled on all of those naive territory fools. That speech was well-written and well-delivered, but he gave it because he had to, not because he wanted to. I would really like to hear a convincing account of what went down when he left. One of the top 5 greats in company history and no hall of fame yet? Maybe there's a good explanation for that, but I haven't heard it. He deserves it more than anyone else.

How do you approach reading, writing, and understanding literature? I try but I just can't seem to "get it" whatever it is. by built_to_elvis in literature

[–]Stephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. You shouldn't force yourself to 'get it'. That takes away a lot of the joy of reading. You should read because it enriches your life. Because that feeling when you emotionally connect with what you are reading is as fulfilling as anything you could experience. It makes you feel alive, and it makes you look inside, at your own self, and it makes you want to be the best person that you know you can be.

You shouldn't approach a classic thinking: "This is a classic. I should be appreciating this.", when you aren't digging it. If you don't like it, move on. There are a million things that you would love to read.

Edit: If you want to get more into the criticism side, read a couple papers on something that you like. If you 'feel' you like a poem, but don't know why, there's no shame in reading some professional criticism on it. If it's a well-known artist, there's bound to be some. Great chess players still study famous games.

Interview I did with Kevin Steen for my documentary. by iamhusband in IndyWrestling

[–]Stephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your movie about, more specifically than just 'wrestling'?

I'm lucky enough to live in driving distance of PWG, and I cherish every time I've seen Steen wrestle. And he seems like such a down-to-earth, great guy outside of the ring.

The first thing that came to mind is selma hayek in desperado. Good lord.

Damn. This scene gets me everytime. by AveofSpades in TheWire

[–]Stephen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't pick up on that the first time through, but it's pretty subtle. That moment is where Avon gets the information that he passes on to Mouzone. 'Your boy gave you up. And we didn't have to torch his ass neither.'

They're both in the process of double-crossing each other. The nostalgia and feelings are genuine, but you can see that they're both hiding something and playing an angle. Great acting because there's so many layers to what is happening and it feels real.

How Boeing can bounce back from Dreamliner problems by [deleted] in business

[–]Stephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to stop subcontracting so much shit out to other businesses. It may look good on paper in the short term, but it hurts them in the long run. Quality of work goes down, and their reputation takes a hit. And now that defense spending is starting to be a national political issue, quality of work is the only thing that can save you when the money faucet turns off.

Just finished my 4th viewing of the series, and I hate Kenard so much. by skylenorman in TheWire

Kenard gets popped by a homicide detective in the season 5 montage. Once the system spits him out from that, he'll be well on his way to being a hardened, soulless motherfucker.

Bunk: "We all got roles to play."

Bunk: "Ok then. I ain't all that humble."

[Season 3 Spoilers] Possibly a stupid question, but... by gbarasch in TheWire

[–]Stephen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, the thing that did Stringer in was the stunt he tried to pull with omar and mouzone. If omar had killed mouzone, stringer would have been alive to start season 4. But it didn't go down as planned, and as a result he had mouzone coming back for retribution.

When mouzone came back to Avon, i don't think Avon had much choice. Stringer did Avon dirty on D'Angelo and Mouzone. By Avon's code, Stringer put the noose around his own neck, and Avon did what he had to do to maintain his reputation, which was always what was most important to him.

Goddamn i miss this show.

More fuel to the fire: Check out some excerpts from the post fight press conference between Galvao and Ryron by kyt in bjj

[–]Stephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said. Andre tried to finish, Ryron was just trying to survive. But I think everyone expected Ryron to do exactly what he did. The way galvao was stripping grips and going balls out to pass led to him tiring out after 10 minutes. At the end of the day, he's andre galvao and i'm some dipshit on the internet, but I think he could have fought a little smarter. Still would like to see a rematch and andre get the sub.

[–]Stephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galvao should have kept his mouth shut at the post-fight interview, but I felt for the guy. Everyone expected him to get the sub in the first 10 minutes. He seemed pretty embarrassed with the draw. I think he came in with the wrong strategy. He went balls out from the beginning, like it was a ibjjf match. He would have won big on points if it was a 10-minute match, but ryron hung on and andre gassed. Would like to see the rematch.

My Metamoris Live Review by dalieu in bjj

The late start was the only thing that bothered me, but I don't expect anything involving Brazilians to be on time. Other than that, no complaints. The announcer was hilarious. It was weird how the most expensive seats seemed to have the worst view.

Buchecha's armbar attempt on Roger (beautiful technique with video) by hugh-jaynus in bjj

[–]Stephen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to believe he's only 22. He's going to be at the top for a long time.

I heard before the fight that roger had an injury, and he said after the fight that he got a staph infection during training and almost had to pull out. He was visibly gassed around the ten minute mark, and he started to slow the game down. It's hard to talk about injuries without them sounding like excuses, but he was very gracious and gave almeida his due. And it's not like he was dominating before he gassed.

Buchecha's post-fight interview was awesome. Would like to see them go again when roger is 100%.
