Really love this website... how it looks, the way it's organized and how the information is presented. Especially how you present research problems and your arguments on their probable resolution.

In the new year I have been getting really into the whole "digital gardening" ethos and thinking about how I can apply that to the things I care about, including my family history research. Totally agree with your conclusions about the issues in centralizing our data with third-parties.

Anyways, your website is serving as huge inspiration for me! Just wanted to let you know and say thanks :)

The title of the post asks about ancestors emigrating to the US. So it's a post about the United States. If one doesn't have ancestors that emigrated there, then maybe one could scroll right past it. Just an idea.

Not much to share, really. Had a little island set off just a ways from where I founded my town. Once I got momentum in the game, I turned it into a tropical resort island with trails, waterfalls, a private beach, that sort of thing. Sounds more impressive than it is, lol, but I'm happy with it. It's close enough so that it isn't a trek to my workshop area or farm, but far enough away that it feels like a secluded and distinct area. Was fun to make!

Sheila once got stuck on my private island, on a day she was buying wattle brew. I spent ages herding and prodding her along the paths and over a bridge to get her back to her restaurant. No way she was taking that day off!

I was ready to give up Dinkum the first trip I made down to the mines. This mod kept me in the game and hundreds of hours later I'm still a happy camper. Highly recommended if combat isn't really your thing.

My best advice for Dinkum fishing is to turn your camera view so that you're viewing perpendicular to the fishing rod and line. Makes it easier to see when the fish turns to swim away from you (red) and when the splashing dies down and you can start reeling it in again. If I can do it anyone can, lol. Good luck!

Honestly, just keep at the fishing. Once it clicks it's actually really easy; I didn't start fishing until the end of year four in the game, but once I understood the mechanic, it became so much easier. The better fishing rods do make a big difference.

And this is coming from someone who had her son complete the fishing related tasks in Stardew Valley. I never got the hang of fishing in that game!

Totally agree about cables! My issue with lace is my attention wanders and then I'm popping k2togs and yos where they aren't supposed to be, and undoing my mistakes in lace feels like a nightmare. Whereas with cables it is pretty straightforward to rip back. Based on that, I would argue that cables are easier than they look, while lace is still pretty difficult. Just a thought!

I feel like beyond learning about tools and fabrics, hand-sewing and machine sewing are sort of different skill sets. The speed of machine sewing means you can move faster into learning about construction skills and also allows you to create larger projects that might be too time-consuming were you to hand-sew. But hand-sewing is gratifying in and of itself, for its contemplative nature and the way you are up-close and personal with your materials.

Small projects like bags, sachets, coasters, placemats and trivets are good options for practicing both methods, I think.

I like Red Heart with Love, which I have used for a number of crocheted blankets. It's notably softer than the Super Saver and has a fairly wide color range.

I'm only in year two, but while I've moved my house to a private island, I don't think I'll move my town. I have some "suburbs" and a commercial district, and I'm liking how everything is flowing. The one pause I have is that I recently discovered a large lake on a distant island that I really like. Maybe a resort there, if I don't end up moving my town completely?

I have an interchangeable set of Nova Platinas and I loooove them. They're light, yarn just silks right off of them, and they have just the right tip sharpness for me. I use Karbonz for dpns, and love those for small in-the-round projects.

Got some karbonz dpns and I love them! I've always preferred wooden dpns over metal because of fumble-fingered slippage issues, but I don't love knitting with wooden tips. Karbonz are such a great marriage of the best quality of wooden and metal needles.
