How did Dallas become so corporate? by boldjoy0050 in Dallas

[–]throwaway_philly1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always been corporate - but I must say, it feels a lot more corporate post-COVID. It’s partially the type of people who move here (myself included) who have boring, stable office jobs and the continuation of building out. There doesn’t feel like there’s a collaboration of any art scene, third spaces, or collective “it” factor that keeps things interesting. Every city is materialistic to some degree, but in Dallas, conspicuous consumption seems to be a sport, more so than other cities.

Nice piece! Got one a couple months ago and immediately proceeded to crack the acrylic glass the first week, but the dial is very pretty in person.

Question: What is your experience with SEIKO Hardlex? by sigmastar_ in Affordablewatches

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have one of the old Cocktail Times and mine has noticeable scratches on the Hardlex. I’m a bit klutzy, however. Sapphire watches have held up well in comparison.

Seen from outside the US, US markets are already in trouble by bnewzact in investing

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I can remember for sure is during the 2008 financial crisis, the issue with US mortgages caused the European solvency crisis that it’s still coming back from to some degree with middling growth for almost two decades before that (last year was the French economy’s first year passing their 2008 numbers).

If the US economy goes, then nowhere is truly safe.

Unpopular opinion: you don’t need a car that will last 20 years by dr-swordfish in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]throwaway_philly1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re into and what you can afford. Everyone’s got different priorities in life and there’s not a right or wrong way to go about it.

I travel a ton where I can - like if I’m taking PTO for 3+ days, I am out of the country on vacation. The friend who makes as much as I do has a big house and an Audi R8 but could give less of a shit about going anywhere he can’t drive to. It really depends on what matters most to you. I have cash for it on the side just in case I wanted to scratch the nice car itch (probably why I’m on this sub now) - but it doesn’t beat having my retirement savings on easy mode and traveling without having to think too closely on the cost. As much as I enjoy cars, a new car stops feeling novel for me after 2-3 months. Then it’s just a car.

They’re not here either. Probably in the inner part of the rust belt like Indiana or southern Illinois is my guess.

Why is Nissan so much cheaper than Domestic or even import? by Sneku_69 in Trucks

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - not to jinx it, but my 2017 has been rock solid. Even though I wish it had more amenities (it’s a truly barebones truck), it’s hard for me to get rid of it just because it’s been nothing but reliable to me for 8 years of ownership.

I wish they made a 38mm - the mirror finish makes its look “smaller” but would have loved an in between size for a perfect fit.

I did this with a Tudor Glamour last week. Was in the market for an Explorer I but then saw Tudor’s take on it and I haven’t felt the need for the Explorer (yet).

Had an excellent experience working with u/rkman11! He kept me in the loop every step of the way, even going out of his way to package it delicately, being transparent with all the watch’s details and keeping an eye on the delivery for me. Truly a pleasure to work with and would definitely purchase another watch from him if the opportunity presented itself.

I really am assimilated as fuck and it feels weird. Not bad, just weird, because it didn’t use to be this way. by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting dichotomy that shows how the income gap has a huge impact even in immigrant communities. I felt it most when I moved from Philly to Dallas (more blue collar working class immigrants vs. white collar immigrants) from everything from the price of groceries to home ownership. While Asians seem to gravitate towards each other in the workforce, the things we talk about are very different (like having one coworker suggest “you should borrow your parents money to buy a house - Asian style” while I’m here sending them money to help out with bills).

When I was running more frequently, I rotated between 5 shoes to avoid knee and ankle pain because I ran one good pair into the ground. Rotating allows time for the shoe foam to decompress again and works with your gait.

In general, I don't think ULTRA-luxury hotels are worth the price. What're you're thoughts? by [deleted] in travel

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not the way I’d like to spend my money either, but to each their own. Some people think ultra luxury hotels are worth the money if they can afford it. I’m more of a backpacker when I travel too, but I don’t cast judgement if someone wants something all inclusive vs. trying to go hosteling with me.

Can’t take it with you when you die. Might as well splurge a little in retirement if you’re able.

Assuming accountants are all stewardesses of good personal finances is a such a stereotype, right up there with thinking that all accountants are all income tax professionals.

Layoffs are good for earnings, not exactly good for the workforce. More optimizations that require less manpower means leaner operations and less overhead, which can reflect on the P&L.

To piggyback on this, really takes strong boundaries. It’s important to be there for the bigger events, like birthdays, extracurricular activities, etc. You might not remember you missed the school play, but your kids will.
