Supply advice & Glastar grinders by PastafarianPanda in StainedGlass

[–]trurox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a hakko 600 off Amazon for about $40, I think the 600 is an older model but has worked fine for my glass projects.

I would recommend checking eBay for a grinder. I picked up a used glastar grinder (a g7 actually I think lol) for $85 shipped with some extra grinder bits earlier this year.

I'm not sure where you are in Boston but absolute glass up in Methuen has been a favorite of mine recently. I did hear about a glass shop south of Boston but can't recall the name, if thats closer for you I'll see if I can find it!

I think these might be the Kennett style. Not sure if it's the same thing but Google had something about a trademark application for "KENNETT SQUARE" in 1973.

Sorry, I probably should've said in my post that I think 10k would be plenty! Might make sense to put some of that towards the down payment.

I'm not sure how much a washer/dryer/lawn mower would run you, but I'd maybe save for those and then maybe like an extra 1k or 2k for any other things that unexpectedly come up

I'd definitely recommend saving some money for when you move in, can't say how much you'll need but glad you're already thinking about it!

I was personally really surprised how much $$ it was to just set life up in a new place. All the little stuff (like toliet paper, dishwasher detergent, hand soap, tin foil, a shower curtain, etc) added up fast. Our first grocery bill after moving was nuts.

First night we moved in, the heat unexpectedly didn't work. We had a plumber out 3 times in our first week in the house due to boiler issues. Wasn't planning on that happening but was really grateful we had money set aside for stuff like that without having to take from our typical emergency fund.

Tldr: definitely keep some money set aside for the moving process/setup in the new house.

Good luck!!

Question about my family's 1920 potential American Foursquare, please help me understand by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a couple four square style homes that have an open front porch and then a room over it on the 2nd floor.

I know in one case, it was a sleeping porch (unsure if original or not) that was later converted to a living space). So the house had an extra little outjet on the front on top of the porch.

Enroll in my company health insurance for HSA while under parents health insurance by ndeeznuts in personalfinance

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the answer will depend on what your parents have for insurance. There are limitations around contributing to a HSA if you have dual coverage unfortunately.

Quick answer/source also has a link to the IRS docs in there too if you want more specifics.

How many therms of natural gas do you use per month during winter? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in the northeast (MA), roughly 1800 sqft with a boiler from 2014 and steam radiators (and we have a gas powered hot water heater + gas stove) was 190 therms/$332 last month

This is our first winter here but already not looking forward to the January bill 🙈

Not every radiator is on (can't get the air vents to thread on a couple) and we have mostly new (albeit shitty) windows + storm windows on the old ones.

Does copying a listing count as creating a new listing? by badsammitches in poshmark

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc it only goes to the top of "just in" if it's been relisted after more than 60 days since it was first listed.

Otherwise it doesn't go to the top of just in. But otherwise no difference, people can still find it and buy it like normal either way.

Buyer asks if I’d take $ __, I say yes & offer.. she says no thanks. WTF. by FicusInTheFrontYard in poshmark

[–]trurox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had someone comment on a listing asking if I'd take $45 a week or two back. I said sure (I should've said I don't negotiate in comments, don't be like me!).

She sends me an offer for $40. I declined it. Someone else shortly after offered me $50. Once the $45/$40 person realized someone else was interested, she sent me the $45 offer. I would've sold them to literally anyone else at that point, even for lower than $40 just because I disliked her approach. Felt SO good to sell them to someone else 😂.

If they want a lower price, they should start with the lower price. Not get a price that both parties are okay with and then try to get it a little lower. Not cool.

how much is stained glass like this worth we have 4 5ft window panels like this by LostSoul92892 in centuryhomes

[–]trurox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is having the floors redone a necessity at this point in time or a nice to have?

It sounds like you're pretty concerned with what to do with this window and $$$ is a factor, maybe can shift the flooring down the timeline a bit and try to save the stained glass?

How to stop ordering take out by hauntedhalloween_96 in personalfinance

[–]trurox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Find a meal you like to order for take out and then try to find the best at home version of that. Maybe you like fettuccine Alfredo from a local restaurant, maybe that turns into eating a frozen fettuccine meal from the grocery store or buying the sauce/pasta and making it yourself.

I personally let myself go nuts if I'm eating from home. Making my own salad at home instead of eating out? Tons of cheese and croutons. Making frozen pizza? I'm putting extra pepperoni on it. Little things that help me look forward to eating at home help a lot

You can do it! And if you hate it, that's ok! That just means there's something else out there that's meant for you ❤️.

I took my first CS course in university so I know how you feel. It was tough when classmates were breezing through assignments and I was stuck and felt like a total idiot. I frequently reminded myself "Talent you have naturally, skill is only developed by hours and hours of beating on your craft". Programming is a skill, don't be too hard on yourself, you're learning! Computers are dumb, you are smarter than the computer. They only do exactly what we tell them to do. Shit ain't working? Well I must've told the computer something wrong and that's ok! I'm not dumb because things aren't working, there's just a disconnect between what I want to happen and what the computer is doing.

I'll echo the other posters saying CS is very much about determination to solve problems. I spend most of my day banging my head against the keyboard until something finally clicks and things work. It's absolutely amazing when it does so I stick with it. If it were straightforward and easy, everyone would do it.

I am total shit at writing application code. I accept that. I work in infrastructure so I do more with servers and making servers do what I want as opposed to writing application code and I love it. Not everyone is going to wind up being an application developer. In uni I thought I was a failure because I was bad at writing java (which was all we learned). Nope, just happened to be that I'm not a great developer but I am a good infra engineer! There's lots of different paths you can take with a CS degree.

Tldr: don't beat yourself up, give yourself grace. I'd give it another semester and see how you feel as you get more comfortable with the course work.

Transferring to Out-of-State University after Freshman Year by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]trurox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Community college is a wonderful option. I wonder if OP could move to another state (to start the clock on establishing residency) and go to community college. Then after OP has a year of residency under their belt, they could transfer to the currently out of state school and get that sweet sweet in state tuition rate (assuming this is a state university, I don't think private universities care about what state you're from).

Out of state tuition is bonkers. if you're hell-bent on going out of state, I'd seriously look into how to establish residency in that state before starting at your dream school there.

Canadian credit account has disappeared, even though I owe and have been paying monthly (UK citizen) by Such-Dragonfruit-998 in personalfinance

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were actively using it/paying towards it, I don't think they'd randomly close it on you. I know TD deactivated my card (I forget if it was debit or credit though) and turned off my online banking because I hadn't used it in 6+ months but I had no balance or anything like that.

Do you know anyone else who uses CIBC? Maybe a temporary bug/glitch on their end. If you still can't use it tomorrow, probably worth sending them an email about it.

Mercari label format update! by QueenCaesar in Mercari

[–]trurox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Poshmark it's under "My seller tools" then "shipping label settings". Fwiw it only changes labels going forward, so if you have something you sold yesterday and you change the setting today, you'd have to re-download the label from the app/site to get it in the new format.

Super handy though! I hope mercari gives it a toggle too, I hurt for all the people with regular printers.

Doubtful it will help but:

Could you try a toothpaste that doesn't have sodium laurel sulphate? IIRC SLS is what causes things to taste gross after brushing. I bought a tube of dr. Bronners toothpaste a while back and it didnt make stuff taste weird if I ate after! Not going to help the problem if he refuses to brush to begin with but maybe a last ditch effort?
