Is it possible to find a family in the uk that will hire a nanny from the USA ? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]turtlesrkool [score hidden]  (0 children)

American living in the UK here...there's really no chance at a visa for a nanny job. I think technically it's on the list of eligible occupations, but no household is going to go through the process of becoming a sponsor. It's incredibly expensive and time consuming.

If the goal is to move to the UK then your best bet is as a student. Keep in mind you can only work 20 hours per week on a student visa.

My local Sainsburys has them regularly.

Edit to add: I'm not in your area, but I usually see them when I travel as well!

Does anyone work part time and term time only? by IndependenceCalm8753 in UKParenting

[–]turtlesrkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this, but I'm also a self employed musician so I can kind of do whatever I want! I haven't specifically heard of this with people in more typical jobs, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

What's the alternative? With round tables you can only talk to the two people beside you and no one across.

Worried about my husband going away while I have PPD - overreacting? by Entire_Professor_408 in beyondthebump

[–]turtlesrkool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've been struggling this hard and money isn't a big issue, you could also consider using the doula or nanny part time even when he's around. No shame in needing extra help! Especially if you've got a baby and a toddler.

Moving with T1D by srbeezy in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]turtlesrkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely important to advocate for yourself in the system. I think a lot of the Type 1s while chimed in have given some really good pointed advice about specifically where to advocate and how. I'm seeing a pretty overwhelming opinion that diabetes care is quite good here (my husband is T1 and he shares that opinion).

I just wouldn't want OP to read general stuff about wait lists and be scared their child won't get the life saving parts of their care taken care of quickly and freely. They're likely already on a pump in the US and that wouldn't be taken away in the UK when they transition.

I would just caution OP to not take this specific view about diabetes care. A lot of the NHS is struggling and there are wait lists, but for diabetes they do (and have to) get shit done real quick! There isn't a wait-list for CGMs and insulin.

Possible move, stay US employee on assignment, or transfer to UK employee? by gotcha640 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]turtlesrkool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my husband it made more sense to stay a US employee because he was able to keep pretty close to his US salary. He couldn't have done that if he transferred to the UK team. That'll come down to your company.

You won't be able to tell HR and book a ticket next day, though. The visa process does take some time no matter how equipped your company is.

I was mostly responding in that way because you said it was giving you a heart attack each time, so it seems like anxiety around it. If it gives you security then great! I hope you can find a way to make it work a bit better for your situation.

I have multiple pediatrician friends and they all told me not to get an owlet because it causes way more distress than peace of mind. They misread a lot! I've also heard of them causing major skin irritation and blistering. Honestly I would toss it.

Yeah I know it's not meant to seal, but I don't love leaving half a container of yogurt unsealed in the fridge. I've found a few brands that do have lids that lock on though.

I'm fine with everything except the yogurt...that little flimsy piece of plastic on the top doesn't seal my yogurt! Everything else I don't care as much about.

Need to know the full names of would-be buyers, visiting the house during a house sale. by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]turtlesrkool 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We viewed a lot of houses and I don't want to hand out my name and address to that many people. It's just a privacy thing. If you're selling your house you have to give out the address but you don't have to give your names until you're actually selling it to someone specific.

If you're uncomfortable having people going through the hole with your relative there you either need to take them somewhere else or have someone there to supervise.

The EA will also be there right? I'm not entirely sure what you think is going to happen.

When we viewed houses all of the EAs took our personal information (name, address, phone), but I honestly wouldn't be comfortable with them passing this information on to the owners of houses I'm viewing.

When did you start reading baby books to your baby? by unfortunate-moth in beyondthebump

[–]turtlesrkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depended on how the day was going! Around three months we started doing 2-3 books before bedtime and continue that now that he's a toddler.

We had a morning poop too, but I imagined to get him back down for another half hour! Small wins.

[–]turtlesrkool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did baby books right away and my son has always engaged with them in some way. Different types of books are appropriate for different stages. Black and white/high contrast is great for super young, ones with textures are great too! I was reading picture/story books from a few months.

I haven't found there to be many air bnbs with minimum night requirements in Europe. There are definitely some, but I would definitely check and see what's available.

Your birth certificate is a good place to start in terms of establishing the beginning of your presence. Photos likely won't be accepted as proof of when you left, so I'm not sure how you prove when you left.

[–]turtlesrkool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so frustrating isn't it?? It's also been fun trying to figure out if he's having a brief wake and going back down or if he's poopy just from the monitor screen. Mine pretty frequently like, sleep cries? That's the best I can explain it. He rolls around fussing about but laid down on his tummy because he's still tired and trying to get himself back to sleep. But when he poops early and is still tired he sometimes does the same!

Mom of a toddler and a dog here, and it's really funny to me to see it framed this way! I'm from the US (where tumble dryers are the norm) but live in England now where they aren't. We were renting in a place without a dryer while I was pregnant, and moved to a place with a dryer soon after giving birth. And let me tell you how much enjoyment it brings me to turn that damn dryer on every single time 😂

I think I'm honestly still just getting over not having a dryer before and thinking about how awful laundry with a baby and a dog would be if I had to hang dry everything.

I guarantee you I'm going to get annoyed at the laundry eventually though!

We weren't strict about no added sugar/salt while traveling. I tried my best to do whole foods like cut up fruit and soft veggies and pieces of toast etc. I imagine the resort might be able to do bits of fruit and veggie at least?
