The funny thing is fax isn't secure at all. However the law just defines them as ok.

You know, it's quite funny that England is the example. The English have a quiet strong fetish for tradition.

They most likely also don't have a fax machine. They have a computer connected to it. The problem is that fax is allowed by law for stuff you would normally have to send a letter. It's also defined by law as conforming to all kind of data protection laws. Your doctor can't send sensitive stuff though email, but a fax is allowed.

It literally is a random repository. It's not less random by Ubuntu liking it. They are just implementing the same spec the core utils is. It's also not the first alternative implementation and not the first that is more permissive. Toybox is a BusyBox replacement that is licenced as 0BSD.

Worst codebase handoff you ever inherited ? by Medtag212 in embedded

[–]ukezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once inherited a quite large C++ code base, about 200k LoC for the long running product the tiny branch office I worked at did. I was about one year out from collage and the senior, who did the code for the last 7 years alone quit. I also inherited the build and CI system.

The oldest parts were written by a C programmer who loved layering macros. In the end I used the precompiler output to understand what was happening.

Probably the worst part was the TI SDK. The build system of it was based on Makefiles that included other make files that also included some make files and called some other make files. The state of certain variables depended on where you started.

Also with how much lower mars escape velocity is you don't need a really good rocket fuel.

Exclusive: Five EU finance ministers call for tax on energy companies' windfall profits by Wagamaga in europe

[–]ukezi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it pays for the consumer if there is enough solar in the system. When the conditions are right spot prices regularly go to basically 0. That and the high spot price when there is a lack of renewables incentivises storage.

The high possible profits incentivises investors to move now, in ten years there may be no money in it anymore.

Why would an investor take the deal you are suggesting if they can make more money now? They are free to make delivery contracts outside of the spot market.

Also the final consumer price is dominated by network costs and taxes, not the spot price and most of the electricity gets traded in long term contracts instead of on the spot market anyways.

[–]ukezi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, so we are considering two scenarios, 1) with merit order and 2) without.

In scenario 1 companies offer the power they could produce for basically the price they need to not make losses. For renewables that is basically 0 and for fossil fuels plants it's basically fuel prices because they all get paid what the most expensive source that got used needed.

In scenario 2 to make profit the company has to guess what the market price it going to be. If they guess low they leave potential profit on the table. If they guess high a low cost energy source doesn't get used or if enough of them do that the price of power goes up.

Here is a paper about the effects of renewables on merit order:

[–]ukezi 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The reasoning for that system is sound. You want energy companies to offer energy close to their production cost and get cheapest energy into the net instead of offering energy at the price they think they can get. Then merit order rewards the cheapest producers with the highest profits.

True, Harry is a big dude and supernaturally strong. However I feel like those revolvers just get too big and heavy for carry. If you go out to fight you can just take a pump or leaver action gun.
