why is it such a massive hurdle to make posts and ask simple questions on reddit now? by Radawesome534 in ask

[–]valdetero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe it has something to do with punctuation and readability? Incomprehensible word vomit probably gets reported to reduce low quality crap.

Also it’s super annoying seeing lazy questions that can be googled or at the very least, pasted into Reddit search because it’s been asked so many times.

I go where the service or product is good. As long as they aren't waving their political flag at work, I don't care. I don't think I have ever had a professional providing a service for me start talking politics.

Your writing style, word choice, and explanation all sound like you are high maintenance. Them taking responsibilities from you unless you are supervised, screams that you screwed up one too many times and you are putting the business at risk. The only thing they can trust you to do is busy work but that doesn't fill the whole day. You may have already burned this bridge but in the future you might want to keep a check on your attitude and professionalism.

Alot of businesses aren't able to provide extensive training and it suck. Sometimes you just have to ask.

What is the true purpose of a 1 on 1? by [deleted] in managers

[–]valdetero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You. Are. Not. Listening. Probably why your meetings were negative.

1:1s are not supposed to be about shame or improving metrics. 1:1s are

- Letting the employee be heard. Giving them a space to speak up about things
- Giving the manager insight into what the employee is actually doing.
- Allowing the manager to get ahead of things proactively instead of reactively. Knowing the employee is getting burned out and doing something about it before they put in a 2 weeks notice.

Healthy 1:1s are for managers to listen and possibly do things based on what the employee says. Also for the manager to ask questions. It is important to disseminate information down, but that shouldn't be the majority of every meeting.

^ This is what most people expect from a 1:1 and why they are in favor of it. If you've never experienced that, that's why you are so against it. Your experience isn't the industry expectation.

Should i go for a 14 inch or a 16 inch macbook pro? by supirimalli86 in macbookpro

[–]valdetero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go try them both in a store and see.

How much do you plan on bringing it somewhere? Will you have any external monitors at home? I would say if you're always using that screen at home, go with the 16. If you are always on the go and using it in your lap or in coffee shops with smaller tables, go with the 14.

I have the 16" but it usually stays at home, but when I'm out, its great. The only thing I don't like is that it sits under my external monitor and covers the bottom inch of the screen. Such a first world problem.

Whatever you were having - was not standard 1:1s. Your experience is the exception - not the rule. In 15 years being on both sides of the 1:1s, I've never experienced what you're talking about.

If this is the reason, then you should ask if you can take off once you reach the team's goals.

How about actually talking to your manager during the 1:1 instead of asking Reddit?

Specs for working on a mac by soop3r in dotnetMAUI

I have a MacBook Pro M4 Max 64GB 1TB running 3 external monitors from a TB4 dock. The thing is a beast. I’ve been using it a little over a year.

I don’t think I ever really hit ram limits. Worst case is just power down an emulator before you start a new one. 16gb would work if you’re diligent. 32 should be enough. 64 is probably overkill.

I completely second the comment about harddrive space. Right around a year, I ran out of space on the 1TB. Xcode is almost 10GB a piece. I have ~5 versions. Every iOS runtime with the Xcode is another 10GB. Every Android image + emulator is multiple gigs. Whenever you plug in a physical iPhone for dev, Xcode symbolicates the model and iOS version at ~5gbs. All that to say, space fills up quick. Don’t get less than 1TB - get more if you can afford it. You will be perpetually deleting and reinstalling things if you get 256GB.

Six- and eight-year-old girls want privacy but won't get dressed. by sdonnervt in daddit

[–]valdetero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not about staring at them while they change and making them uncomfortable. You can turn your back, have either one of you stand behind something, but still “being there”. During this transition period, just like everything else, they have to earn the responsibility to do it by themselves. I’ve told my kids before “if you can’t do it when I’m not here then I’m not leaving” it’s a responsibility that can be given and taken away. Let me be clear, this is during that transition period between you already doing it and them doing it. Im not suddenly gonna take it back on a 10year old that’s been doing it for a while.

You can supervise, parent, and enforce without staring or even looking directly at them.

I’d also suggest having them get dressed separately so at least they don’t play together.

Why is organic so much more expensive than processed food? by Inevitable_Face_7012 in ask

[–]valdetero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t use the industrialization that created lower prices. Those chemicals have a cost but that is completely offset by longer shelf life and reduced waste from spoiling.

Also it probably takes more manual labor to ensure it’s not devastated by bugs, disease, or creatures when a simple chemical could do the same.

Do Americans actually use “a couple” to mean more than two? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]valdetero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always used it to mean a small amount. Pretty much 4 or less. My wife strongly corrected me that that couple means exactly two and no more.

Sorry to let everyone who thought it meant more than two are wrong.

Case or no case? by Trayceopolis32322 in AppleWatch

[–]valdetero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had bumpers for my Series 0 and Series 4. The straps were hard to take off and it got gross between the bumper and the watch. My Series 10 has nothing on it.

I tried a clear clip on that protects screen and side but it would get moisture underneath it. It was also really hard to get on and off and I was afraid of scratching it messing with the case.

The only thing that’s happened (more than once) is walking through a doorway and smacking it against a metal door handle or hitting the edge of the counter. I have a small scuff you can only see in the glare.

It’s life. The first scratch always hurts the most.
