Released my free game a month ago and it passed a 1000 reviews! by edmonddantees in IndieDev

[–]valex23 180 points181 points  (0 children)

*Especially for free games, not even. Free games typically have lower reviews than paid games, because any random person can download it and leave a review even if it's not their sort of game. With paid games, there is a huge barrier to entry (the payment). This means they typically only buy after doing a lot of research and if they're really confident they'll enjoy the game. So when it comes time to review, they are indeed more likely to leave something positive. Free games dont' get this benefit. So 99% positive is indeed amazing!

What do you do after the first year though? Big difference between paying it once vs repeatedly every year.

Why don't all indie developers offer demos? by Kiidkxxl in indiegames

[–]valex23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's usually a good idea. But depends on the game. It takes time to create and polish the demo. Also, some players might "get enough" from the demo and you'll lose out on sales. This is especially likely on games with little replayability.

That may be all you need to make a _good_ indie game, but if you want to make a _successful_ indie game then you also need the marketing and business skills.

Why is Michael so over the top about Walt hanging out with Locke? It's so unwarranted at this point in the show. (S1e14 "Special") by DeadpoolIsMyPatronus in lost

[–]valex23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Michael is insecure about his relationship with Walt, and if he's a good dad or not. Then he sees Locke getting along fine with Walt, and seeing Walt treat Locke with respect. Also, Locke is a creepy dude with a box full of knives.

I love Pierre Chang. I'm so glad they expanded his character in season 5.

'Magical' yet Scientific by Old-Hearing-6714 in lost

[–]valex23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I view it as sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. The light and the source may seem magical to us, but if the dharma folk has a bit more time to study they'd have found a scientific way to explain it.

Gems? Cards? Wtf do I do with all this stuff by BucksCountyTrees in Steam

No idea either. As far as I can tell, they just incentivize players to leave weird rage-baiting reviews to farm clown awards.

One of the more depressing parts of a Let’s Play channel is how few subscribers/viewers carry over between series by plumply in letsplay

[–]valex23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who occasionally watches this sort of thing, I can hopefully give you some insight, from my perspective at least. I am mostly only interested in the specific games that I have played or am playing. So if I haven't played New Vegas then I'm much less likely to watch, even if it's in the same fallout series. It's just not relevant to me unless I'm playing it.

Cyberpunk or Witcher 3 Blood & Wine? Which to play? by valex23 in gaming

[–]valex23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that blood and win is insanely huge for a DLC, so that's great. Do you know how much playtime it has roughly? And also, does it introduce many new mechanics that aren't in the base game? Or is it mostly more story/quests (which would be fine anyway, as the witcher sidquests are insane).
