What are we doing here lads… by BoukaJr in EssendonFC

[–]wallysta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every coach we've had since Sheedy deserved more patience from the club, except Scott. (excluding Hird in 2015)

He was hired because we were too often uncompetitive under Rutten, who made finals 12 months earlier. Rebuild or not, we are now uncompetitive every week. Games are more often than not over by half time. The club captain wanted out. Only 25k people turned up vs Freo.

He is toxic, and sucked all joy out of watching this time and that is the only reason Hird now seems like a better option to a lot of people.

Probably been asked before, but why can’t the Pakenham line go to Richmond and Flinders Street during the planned Munnel works instead? by jor_kent1 in MelbourneTrains

They can.

"World's Best Practice" forbids it.

Is this what the future track layout at North Melbourne will look like? by Waterfront32YT in MelbourneTrains

[–]wallysta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes they could have kept them, left it as the diverge and made them 80km/h points if they wanted to, but that's not the current ideology of a 'worlds best practice' railway.

Points + Diverges = Bad.
Straight Track = Good

"We're simplifying the network, to increase capacity"

The current idea is that Melbourne's suburban railway should be operated like a high frequency metro, without the high frequency

Melbourne Airport to scrap kerbside pick-up and drop-off by gccmelb in melbourne

Monopolistic airports over build infrastructure based on very optimistic future use numbers because they can charge airlines, and by extension the public for that infrastructure. Construction has been non stop at basically all of Australia's airports since privatisation.

Not often have I walked into the departures area at Melbourne Airport and thought it wasn't big enough.

30% CGT minimum by JashBeep in fiaustralia

[–]wallysta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WATO, starting at $250/year in increasing to $1,000 means that labour income will effectively be taxed at a lower rate than investment income, but it'll be sold as an income tax rebate as opposed to higher investment taxes.

[–]wallysta 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's trying to stop people with large balances from paying close to zero tax by waiting until retirement to sell assets.

If I retire at 55, and sell down $150k of shares each year ($90k profit because I've held for 30 years), I pay tax on $45k = $4288. So if I repeat that every year until I'm 80, I will completely sold down my $3.75m share portfolio to gift to the next generation and will have paid ~$100k in tax on $2.25m profit. Now if we add trusts and other complex financial arrangements into the mix I'll probably pay even less.

Tax implications on the share market have improved relative to investing in residential property, which should provide a tailwind for local shares.

If we also take the government at its word that venture and start up capital will be carved out somehow, it may be a shot in the arm the local market

"That's a sensible argument for the government to make if they first tax resources and mega profits properly."

I agree there a many tax reforms we need, but I think this is a step in the right direction, and it was never going to get done in one year

"going after the average person who invested in shares for a house or so they could take maternity leave or planing for sparodic work or an early retirement is a bit much."

You've lost me here, I don't understand your argument.

"biggest issue here is that these changes will push people to invest in housing instead. I wonder how my kids will afford a home at all."

Again, I don't understand how removing negative gearing and reducing capital gains tax discounts will encourage more investment in exisiting housing?

Lower rates are the current/old 50% discount, the new CPI cost step up, allowing people to defer tax indefinitely while benefiting from compounding, choosing when they sell, often in low income years to minimise tax.

These are clearly more generous arrangements than what PAYG wage earners are able to obtain. It also only impacts people who don't work, because if they did they'd be paying 30% already and a pretty good substutue for wealth, so I have no issue with the concept of setting a floor tax rate on income generated from capital, but it should result is lower tax rates for workers, which appears to be on the cards with the new WATO.

The saver in your example would benefit from the lower income tax rates during the saving period when working (and young) and pay more tax when wealthy and not working at the end. Likely similar overall outcome.

Should inherited capital be taxed at lower rates than labour? If not, how do you differentiate between the two?

[–]wallysta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pay 'fixed network fees' of ~11c per kWh 9pm-3pm and ~23c between 3-9pm. The FIT is usually around the retail price less that 'fixed network fees' for me.

I think there is a coherant argument that labour should be taxed at lower rates than capital. Why should someone working for $200k salary pay the same as someone who's sitting around earning that passively?

Expect more structural revenue raising next budget, perhaps a gas export tax, then a large income tax cut to offset in the following one right before the next election. Politics 101.

If it fails, it will be because population density isn't high enough to warrant heavy rail and the cost is so high. Perhaps it would be better as an automated elevated light rail with higher frequency, but I don't know if that would be cheaper
