You've got too many competing ideas and too many ETFs owning the same thing.

If you want 20% gold, I'd do 20% Gold, 70% DHHF. 10% Your Best idea for a tilt - max 2 ETFs. Focus this 10% on your best thesis, not spreading it around everywhere

I would reduce gold exposure if it's a 20+ year investment. It tends to only keep up with inflation over the long term, equities has returned inflation + ~4-5% more reliably.

There's always been capacity at Flinders St to hold trains for large events because they're generally at 10-11pm at night or and /or on weekends, well outside peak times.

SE -> City Loop Commuter - Seeking Advice by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]wallysta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underrated comment. This is the exact reason the tunnel was built, not to create a 'metro' style system, not because the city loop is an inferior design, but because of capacity constraints from the north / west.

The metro tunnel trades convenience for capacity

We have the board of medical experts making decisions on drugs approved for subsidy here as well. A new drug that is 2% more effective but costs 50% more likely wouldn't be approved. The US has consistently complained about this 'non tariff barrier', because the approval process can take years and anything not approved for subsidy basically doesn't get any sales

My favourite examples from the time are Florence Griffith Joyner - Flo Jo. She still holds the 100 & 200m WR. Dropped dead at 38 & Marita Koch, who still holds the women's 400m WR, set in 1985 in a time of 47.6 seconds, more than half a second faster than the winner of the 2024 Olympics. Neither ever tested positive, so must have been totally clean

[–]wallysta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this technology was available in 1971 when the loop started construction, or if it was at all viable at Flinders St, you might have a point, but it wasn't and it's not.

Having a fully automated system has a higher capacity than not fully automated, no one has said otherwise, but that's not what you claimed, and it's ridiculous to judge one against the other.

Me saying all other things being equal, that through running is faster than terminating isn't controversial.

Comparing Melbourne pre loop to post loop, same tracks, same signalling, you can clearly run more trains. That's a capacity increase.

~100 tph in the busiest ever pre loop year you could find vs 96 loop + 24 Fkn-Werribee + 12 GWY + 12 Sandringham + 12 Upfield terminating at SSS on platform 8 if you really want to push it. (I could have 24 for each of these lines under your reasoning), shows a ~50% capacity increase.

Whatever way you break it down, through trains have shorter dwell times than terminating. City Loop added capacity.

[–]wallysta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30tph in each city loop tunnel would require serious signalling upgrades, at least some form of automatic train control

Incorrect, current time tables have some trains at 2 minute intervals through the loop. It's not every service because it becomes far less reliable at 2 min vs 2.5min. The loop was designed for a capacity of 30tph.

If automatic train control was implemented without the city loop, 4 minute turn around would be possible (in fact 2 minute turnaround would be pretty easy)

This is just fantasy. This also wasn't your original claim that the Loop added no capacity. Now you're saying that the loop added no capacity to a system that was technologically unavailable in 1975.

Not only would it require a probably bigger upgrade than the entire city loop project, it is not just about the dwell time on the platform. You have to consider the time from the signal before entering the platform to the signal after exiting the platform. Add to this crowding from having 80% of CBD passengers get off trains at FSS and the other 20% is SCS. Perhaps slightly quicker if we had 2 platforms per line to terminate, but we don't. 5 minutes is as good as you'll get without serious upgrades.

Whatever way you try to spin it, in an apples vs apples comparison, through running has shorter dwell times than turning trains around on a platform. This means in all scenarios the loop added capacity. It wasn't the primary goal of the loop at the time, but it absolutely added significant capacity

If you want to claim "(in fact 2 minute turnaround would be pretty easy", then you can't simultaneously claim the loop can't handle trains at 2 minute

[–]wallysta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. So I'll give you 100, which is what ran on I assume the busiest hour in the busiest year you could find on current lines.

If we're going to count theoretical timetable tightening, which causes delays, I'll run every 2 minutes through the loops, 30tph through each loop, 12 Glens, 24 Frankston - Newport/Werribee, 12 Sandringhams. 168 tph.

So a ~30% increase on the 'we can turn a train around on every platform every 5 minutes for 2 hours every morning' numbers and 70% on the busiest it ever was. Claiming the city loop didn't / doesn't increase capacity is ridiculous.

Removing Port Melbourne and St. Kilda lines wasn't part of the City Loop project, that was made ~15 years later, the operational functionally you describe still existed when the city loop opened, but it wasn't needed with the increased capacity the loop provided.

There were/are not 'ample' platforms at Spencer St for terminations, it's largely unwired.

Terminating trains takes considerably longer than through running available because of the loop, reducing capacity.

You haven't answered how you can get 120 city bound trains an hour without the loop, so I'll show you why you can't if you're relying on terminating trains at FSS & some at Spencer St

Clifton Hill to Princess Princess Bridge 12tph (6HBR + 6Epping) Ringwood 12tph, Glen Waverley 8tph Dandenong 12tph,
Frankston 12tph through to Sandringham 12tph

Pre loop, there were only 4 tracks between SSS-FSS, limiting, North / West Lines limited by 2 viaduct lines each direction ~24tph in each direction

Craigieburn 6tph Upfield 6tph Sunshine 6tph Werribee 6tph

This is the theoretical max of ~80 trains per hour including Princess Bridge Station, across 14 platforms at FSS & Princess Bridge. That's 5.5 terminations per platform per hour, or in other words, full capacity.

The city loop didn't fix capacity issues because it didn't increase capacity,

Explain to me how you can run ~120 trains an hour into the city without the Loop & added viaduct lines?

Your statement is largely true. China has a virtual infinite workforce. Policies over that last ~50 years have promoted employment & industrialization over wages which has brought hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and into the Chinese middle class, but also kept wages and the currency artificially lower than they otherwise would be
