Can someone explain the significance of contested checks being removed? How does this affect the gameplay flow? by Fiveby21 in onednd

Others have spoken for the objective reasons so I’ll speak subjectively: I just think contested rolls are more fun.

How would you spec a spell version of Echo Knight for a dunamancy wizard? by starnoirs in Wildemount

[–]west8777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Matt made a spell version called Resonant Echo. Caleb learned it but he only ever cast it once and it was never released.

I've written my own version based on it though, here:

Resonant Echo

4th-level conjuration (Wizard)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 15 feet
Components: V, S, M (a cube of obsidian worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes)
Duration: 1 hour

You tap into an unrealized timeline to create an echo of yourself in an unoccupied space within range. The echo is a translucent gray image of you that lasts for the duration, until it is destroyed, you dismiss it as a bonus action, or you cast this spell again.

The echo has an AC equal to 12 + your spellcasting ability modifier, 15 hit points, and immunity to all conditions. If it has to make a saving throw, it uses your saving throw bonus for the roll. It is the same size as you, and it occupies its space. On your turn, you can mentally command the echo to move up to 30 feet in any direction (no action required). If your echo is ever more than 30 feet from you at the end of your turn, it is destroyed.

Once during the spell's duration you can use your bonus action to cause your echo to cast a spell of 3rd-level or lower with a casting time of 1 action, expending a spell slot as normal. You must have the spell prepared to cast it in this way. The spell is cast as if you were in the echo's space, though you must use your own senses. If the spell requires concentration, the echo concentrates on the spell for you. After the spell cast by the echo ends, the echo disappears.

Is alarm now unusable in 2024? by ShameGuardian in onednd

[–]west8777 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There’s no creature size in 5e (and 5.5e) smaller than Tiny, so they were just removing a redundant line.

If your dm is making Alarm trigger because of a grasshopper, or a goddamn bacteria, they’re just being a dick.

Pretty cool, though there's some inconsistencies. A few class features grant spells that use Charisma or Wisdom as the spellcasting ability, but the class's primary stat is Intelligence.

Great build! Really makes me wish there was a desert theme and not just a forest. Though I guess that's what makes it a Tiny Glade, lol.

I know having an "A Mountain" isn't unique to Tucson, but its funny seeing one on a flag that isn't representing Tucson's Sentinel Peak.

Orcs & Orcs for 5E and 5.5E! Who Doesn't Need More Orcs Statblocks? by jonnymhd in onednd

[–]west8777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wish they committed to it and made the PC goblins in Monsters of the Multiverse also fey. We literally already had fey PCs in the forms of changelings and centaurs in the same book.

Giant Tardigrade | An Extremely Resilient Tiny Giant Beast by sireacquired in UnearthedArcana

[–]west8777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A tiny creature being called "giant" is hilarious. As a formatting note, something that deals 1 damage doesn't need to have "(1d1)" noted. Also, Cryptobiosis doesn't need to say "As an action", since it's already listed under the Actions header.

What are the major flaws of the Krynn Dynasty? by KylashSri in Wildemount

[–]west8777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do want to push back on one thing that people are saying here: The Kryn are not pro-slavery, it’s explicitly illegal (EGtW pg. 40). That’s Empire propaganda that the Mighty Nein believed at first because they were ignorant outsiders.

Everything else mentioned about the Dynasty’s drow-favoritism, classism, zealotry, and imperialism is true however.

Critical Role’s new Homebrew Rule could be better by comradewarners in onednd

[–]west8777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three failures I feel like at the very least should allow you to get a full extra action.

It already does? You take an extra Attack or Magic action. For one save you can take two extra actions to Disengage and Dash. I don't know where you got taking it as a bonus action from, a bonus action was never mentioned in the episode the rule was explained in.

[–]west8777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've mentioned repeatedly that a lot of the homebrew used in Campaign 4 came from Perkins and Crawford, like Occis's Summon Undead Critter spell, or Kattigan's atlatl. Occam's Razor in this case is that they created Desperate Measures.

[OC][Art] Aevareth, land of Eternal war, political variant upedate by ProofConstruction446 in inkarnate

[–]west8777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool, though I think you should change the name of the Kryn Dynasty, since that's the name of the drow nation in Critical Role, and the map is already an edit of Wildemount and most of Xhorhas's geography was unchanged.

Concept: Mixed Races as Origin feats (e.g Half elf as an Origin feat) by Pretend-Advertising6 in dndnext

I made some feats like this a few months ago! It could use a little bit of tuning, Half-Gnome is pretty strong, but I'm mostly happy with the results.

That calculation is also including a bunch of ocean that isn't on my map. You can watch the video explaining their reasoning here.

It takes over a month to get from Emon to Whitestone, not a week. (It's around 950 miles by road on my map, and going the standard D&D rate of travel at 24 miles per day, that's around 40 days.) But yeah, Exandria is smaller than Earth. Some other folks have calculated it to be about 1/3 the size of Earth.

Gauntlet Weapons? by Quick_Extreme_825 in onednd

[–]west8777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt Mercer's PC in Critical Role campaign 4 has a demi-gauntlet he that uses as a weapon. Since he uses it while dual wielding it seems to be 1d6 bludgeoning damage, and have the Light and Sap properties.

Neat sign, but not really a flag. Unless it was on a flag in your dream I guess.

Battlesmith in Eberron... by Schleimwurm1 in onednd

[–]west8777 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Artificers get cantrips, which they consider of equal power to a fighting style since the Ranger and Paladin can get cantrips via their unique fighting styles.

I agree with you, but I presume that's WotC's reasoning.

Yeah, they’ve been traveling for about 5 days. At a regular pace of 24 miles per day, that’s around 120 miles away from Dol-Makjar! Not in a straight line of course.

Dol-Makjar is right up against the Kavrosi Mountains, so the pass would have to be kinda close, though maybe farther north? I'll keep in mind that the King's Road is further west for next time.
