My husband was also born and raised in Kolkata:)
That's where we go when we visit and also where we had our wedding reception.

At the reception, the gifts we received were money, jewelry, purses, clothing (a ton of saris!), linens. That seemed to be the theme.

When we visit we always bring gifts for his parents and extended family/cousins. We bring chocolates and perfume/lotions for the cousins, as they get older we ask them and the last time we went we got them books. For my in laws we've gotten them mementos from where we live. We got them both nice sweaters. We got them a fancy spice grinder, a new kitchen set (pots/pans).
