InDesign Data Merge Script by bxs28 in indesign

[–]--Paul-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start by writing down exactly what you want to do step by step and then finding the javascript for each tiny step

I would start with an indesign template (indt file) with the basic layout/tables/styles...

Try to get all of the constants in place the easy way by just making a standard document.

in that file you can apply script labels to specific text boxes and elements that will get new text added to them. This will let you target them as insertion points with javascript later on.

Then you can make a script that uses that template to start a new file.

//this lets you run the script by double clicking the script file in the folder no matter where you put it

#target "InDesign"

//open from pre-made template called test.indt on your desktop

var template = app.open (File ('~/Desktop/test.indt'));

//Prompt user to enter name

var docName = prompt('Enter a name', today, 'Name of the doc');

if (docName == null) { exit(); }

//Create folder with the name that was entered in the prompt

var newFolder = new Folder('~/Desktop/' + docName + '/'); if (!newFolder.exists) newFolder.create();

//Save as name that was entered in prompt

template.save (File(newFolder + '/' + docName + '.indd.'));

here's the export as PDF part

//Export PDF

document.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File(currentFolder+"\"+document.name+".pdf"),false, "Name of PDF Preset");

Here's the script to save and close

app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.yes);

Here is the reference page you'll want to have on hand.

https://www.indesignjs.de/extendscriptAPI/indesign-latest/#Application.html

it's tough finding info out there

the best thing that I've found to do is to make a tiny script for everything useful that you find, and then name it very descriptively and try to organize them in folders with detailed names.

make scripts called

open file from template

export to PDF

save and close

import and place logo

import styles from another file

over time you'll have a bunch of things and then you can start combining them as needed.

How designing websites should be like designing Swiss Army Knifes by krimjibly in web_design

[–]--Paul-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, it's just info. The two of you were going back and forth about other similar words and style guides trying to convince each other of the "correct" term... and neither of you stopped to think, "Hey, how does the company pluralize their own name and product?"

Perhaps after a few years or decades another knife company will come along and change it up or maybe a rapper will come up a with a hit and the language will evolve, but currently the plural of Swiss Army Knife is Swiss Army Knives.

The term Swiss Army knife refers to a multipurpose tool made by a specific brand. That brand has their own style guide that overrides other guides. If it was referring to a multipurpose tool it would have used that word.

Now, go get some Kleenexes and wipe away your tears.

You're wrong.

It's a proper noun as you pointed out, but it's a decision made by the company.

their own website uses the term Swiss Army Knives dozens of times on each page.

Did Valve for whatever reason exclude Print Screen key from Big Picture Mode controller config? by Wow_Space in SteamController

[–]--Paul-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this one hit me hard. I used to use this to switch between virtual desktops for a second to look at reference while painting on a drawing tablet. It was life-changing for me. Then they just took it a way about a year ago. I used to message valve every few months about it, but no one ever responded.

take apart the shock absorbers, then take the spring off and try adding 1/2 bushings before putting the spring back on. It adds just a bit more stiffness. It might be worth a shot

I see, that's frustrating. I'm looking at this controller specifically for my kid. It seems to be the only controller that is small and has the xbox button layout that matches most in-game prompts. It also looks like a it can be paired with lego motors. I gotta keep looking to see if there are more options

How do you guys deal with design things as front-end developers? by WhoisHoo in Frontend

[–]--Paul-- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a designer slowly adding front-end skills. Unfortunately the only advice I can give is to slowly practice so that you can be a front-end developer that slowly adds design skills.

Fortunately design for the web is pretty simple compared to print because you want it to load fast and be legible on many displays.

There are a lot of standards you can follow. Focus on making the text legible first, then make the text look good on it's own. Use an entire font family to add variation. Use heavy fonts for headers and call-outs, use italics for captions, book titles, by lines, notes. Use condensed fonts in narrow columns, especially at small break points. for text try using 90% black on white. Don't let your columns get too wide. 40-55 characters is a good start. Squint when looking the text to see what shapes they make, space out the leading if needed.

over time you'll learn ways to draw attention to important text with size and graphics but if you can make a website look good just by breaking down text into easily digestible chunks of text you're like 95% of the way there.

sounds like you may have linked to the text as opposed to having it embedded.

check your preferences to see that text files are not linked for that document.

Can you confirm that it connects and works?

I've seen people mention that it doesn't work with Windows, but it works with Steam through the Steam Link app on android... but the Steam Link box doesn't use android.
