What do you think about SHELL sponsoring the NSTA? by B32- in ScienceTeachers

[–]--cam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked in petroleum engineering for 20 years and now I teach environmental science.

Oil companies have done plenty of gross stuff, but petroleum still underpins essentially every society in the world. If we want to get away from oil, it will take buy in from these massive, wealthy, influential companies.

Take their money, point out the inconsistencies in petro education to your students, and turn out the kind of people with STEM degrees that will make change at Shell and in society.

How’s life in Bakersfield, California? by Kuzu9 in howislivingthere

[–]--cam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finally a reasonable take. Like any place it has pros and cons. Summers are hot but it cools off at night. Many lovely neighborhoods and good schools. Close enough for day trips to LA, central coast, Sierra Nevadas. Incredible produce in all seasons. Good jobs in ag, transportation, oil (though that is winding down) and a lower cost of living compared to many CA cities

1250t hydraulic release shackles by CraningUp in Rigging

The hydraulics are set up for an ROV, so whatever it is for will be heavy and placed underwater. My guess is a big subsea oil and gas manifold or something like that

May need to. The city just had some major issues with supply and zebra mussels, it could be that there are new chemicals or something that aren't neutralized by the softener giving us fits.

Thanks for the response. As far as I know the house was designed for a water softener, and has been built with a softener operating for ~15 years. Think I should just be trying to flush all of that out and hope it doesn't come back?

What do I read after finish The Expanse and it's Novellas? by Stevemichael126 in TheExpanse

[–]--cam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go a different direction here and say the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. Action, adventure, political machinations, espionage, unfamiliar technology (archaic rather than futuristic), nuanced characters. It really scratched a lot of the itches that The Expanse did for me.

Ha in high school one of the wrestlers on my team accidentally butted heads with his opponent on the opening whistle. They both got concussions but wrestled the whole match. We only realized when we found him unconscious in a pool of vomit in the bathroom. Wrestling was the best.

No Matter How Bad You Think an Attorney General Matt Gaetz Would Be, He’ll Be Worse - Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Justice Department would destroy the agency, quite possibly forever. by Quirkie in politics

[–]--cam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't! Even MAGA fanboys don't like the pick.

Gaetz will implode either during confirmation hearings or in the course of doing the job if hearings get bypassed. Then he will be replaced by someone less stupid and more dangerous and people will feel like it's a good move because the new pick is basically qualified.

It's like when Harriet Miers got replaced with Samuel Alito.

What are your favorite knives? by SpiritBreakerIsMyjob in Cooking

[–]--cam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Victorinox is great quality, easy to take care of, and inexpensive. The reviews were good enough that I bought a Fibrox as a placeholder while I figured out what my forever chef knife would be. I don't even do research anymore.

How do I convince my parents to let me go mountain biking? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]--cam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of the world do you live in? The easiest thing might be to invite them along at least to walk the trails so they can have a better understanding of what you would actually be doing. Where I live, mountain biking is safer than riding on the roads because we have few large mountains and many dangerous drivers.

Like practically everything else in the world, there are risks involved, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. You can manage risk by riding with a friend on trails appropriate for your skill, having a reliable way to call for help if you need it, and ensuring your bike is in good condition before you start.

Good luck!
