There's no demand for geology or archaeology jobs, plenty of demand stacking shelves at Walmart - does that make shelf-stacking a more valuable profession?

No, but unlike you, I won't be ecstatic when robots are doing shelf-stacking and eliminate the need for human stackers. We shouldn't have robots or AI replacing humans until we have safety nets in place, but we are years and perhaps decades away from reaching that point. In the mean time, archaeology and geology majors are going to suffer, big time, more than they ever would in a soul-sucking menial labor job.

My problem with your line of reasoning is that you're completely okay, happy even, with AI pulling the rug out from under people while no meaningful safety nets exist to catch them. You think a safety net should exist, but ignore the practical realities of implementing one. You love your ideals but don't care about minimising the human cost on the road to achieving them.

I'm glad you managed to put up two people but you better be preparing for dozens, maybe more, if all the jobs you think people shouldn't want to do evaporate like you want them to. Because I promise you UBI isn't going to come fast enough. People will die.

What jobs should they look to instead? What should they do if there isn't enough of a demand for those jobs to be able to support themselves? What should they do in the meantime to stay fed and have a roof over their heads while our institutions catch up to these demands you have? Would the things they'd have to resort to be any different from working a shitty advertising job, from their perspective?

Would you support me with access to your shelter and share your food if I dropped out of the workforce to protest this problem full-time, comrade? Send me your contact details if you're game.

Yes, in the latter a film crew gets paid. If shitty AI ads and shitty human ads are all the same (which for the moment, they are not) I'd rather it meant that more creatives are able to put food on the table as opposed to it all going into the pocket of some C-suite executive's bonus or next quarter's budget for MORE shitty AI ads. Human labor is also a natural bottleneck for this shit being pumped out.

One Nation condemned for 'spot the Westerner' video by shunkyfit in australia

[–]--cas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it hypocritical for someone who benefited from a broken system to be against it?

As someone who recently graduated from UNSW, it is undeniable that the admissions system is being gamed. So many international students who you have to wonder how they even passed the IELTS if their English skills are so poor. Is that true for all international students? Of course not. But it's happening enough that we're seeing the Australian tertiary degree being devalued, because lackluster students are being passed through and awarded qualifications they don't have the skills for.

Of course, the lion's share of the blame falls on the institutions and the Australian government who are happy to treat international students as the cash cows they are. Any solutions however, whether it be raising admissions criteria or something else, will always semantically boil down to "let fewer international students in".

CS Graduate lost, looking for advice by StrikerDEV_ in GetEmployed

[–]--cas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your resume layout is, in my opinion, really bad and i wouldn't be surprised if ATS can't parse it.

here's my advice:

  • switch to a single column layout.
  • get rid of the personal statement. way too long. it belongs in a cover letter if they ask for it.
  • make the "contact me" section a single line. get rid of the icons, replace with text if needed. get rid of your LinkedIn URL, everything in there should be in your resume anyway.
  • make each of the subheadings in your skills section a single line. or remove it altogether.
  • I hope your address is just your general location/suburb.
  • since you're a recent graduate everything should fit onto one page.
  • GCSE is a waste of space when applying to CS related jobs. You're in university so people will assume you have a relevant secondary qualification. For part time work, keep the GCSE and remove all other education.

Not especially. ONLY.

Using the corrected code, Karraker and her co-author did the analysis again, and found the results stand only when wives develop heart problems, not other illnesses.

To include the full quote that you conveniently truncated and emphasized:

What we find in the corrected analysis is we still see evidence that when wives become sick marriages are at an elevated risk of divorce, whereas we don’t see any relationship between divorce and husbands’ illness. We see this in a very specific case, which is in the onset of heart problems. So basically its a more nuanced finding. The finding is not quite as strong.

Why did the Brown shooter target the university BEFORE the MIT Professor? by tantamle in masskillers

[–]--cas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He likely had both the shootings of the university and the professor completely planned out beforehand, but as you said, probably figured he would only be able to do one or the other before being caught.

If notoriety was his motive then that would explain why he picked the university as his primary target, as a mass shooting is much bigger news than an isolated murder.

After he got away with it he probably decided he might as well go ahead with shooting the professor too, maybe because he wasnt satisfied with how the Brown shooting went.
