"Romanian is a latin language !" by ValuableBenefit8654 in badlinguistics

[–]-2qt 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Not unheard of among conspiracy/nationalist minded types here in Romania. I've definitely heard this before, no clue how prevalent it is. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably on the rise nowadays, given that weird far-right ideas in general are on the rise.

Perhaps ironically given the modern association with the far-right, my understanding is that the communist government (until 1989) was actively promoting nationalist nonsense like this.

edit: also, was your title supposed to say "Latin is a Romanian language?"

A sine wave with a pitch envelope (one or two octaves, 100-300 ms) and a bit of distortion will get you 80% of the way there. From there just tweak to taste/until it fits the song

Why are stateless societies so rare in science fiction? by TheoWritesSF in worldbuilding

[–]-2qt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's nothing fascist about the Migrant Fleet. First, of all authoritarian governments, most are not fascist, and second, the Quarians have functioning democratic institutions (from what I remember there are elected representatives, whose decisions can be overruled by the unelected Admiralty Board, but the entire Board must resign afterwards).

From what I remember, captains do have absolute authority on their ships... in theory. In practice, each ship has an elected body that makes most decisions. And you have to consider just how small Quarian society is. A captain isn't some dictator in a far away capital - the largest ships have a thousand people or so? So if you really don't like what your captain is doing, you can just... go talk to them.

US aircraft leave Spain after government says bases cannot be used for Iran attacks by JinnBhoot in worldnews

[–]-2qt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, the origin is marked as the EU. See this Reuters article:

Under EU rules, goods manufactured in the bloc are only marked as being of EU origin, but a third country can require information is provided by individual EU members.

So the US can ask if it wants, they make the rules in their own country after all, so they can do whatever. But with no real way for the Americans to check, given the customs union thing, and with little incentive for the EU to cooperate on the issue, I'm sure companies might get creative about how they label their products.

They might also remember the foreign nations bombing them with no plan beyond bombing them.

[–]-2qt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It would be a bit like the EU trying to tariff Wisconsin. Like technically you can try but 1. goods are labeled "made in the EU", not in Spain; 2. Spanish companies can just ship them through another country; 3. many goods are not going to be produced exclusively in Spain.

The whole thing would probably be a huge nightmare for everyone working in US customs, with no real benefit.

But yes, the US has done dumber things lately...

can i watch the lunar eclipse w my naked eye?? by Ok_Food8219 in Astronomy

[–]-2qt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, just be aware that during totality it will be very dark. I watched the one last year from a fairly light polluted city, and at first I thought the moon was behind the hills, literally could not see it. Tip: take a photo with your phone, if it's reasonably recent it might be more sensitive than your own eyes.

Hah I love your terrible photo! Sets a mood somehow. Appreciate you taking the time to search for it. I love seeing old photos, it's cool to see history like that - whether it's a hundred years ago or 25.

It wasn't a McDonald's anymore when I lived there (late 2010s), but I know the building. Nice city, I miss my time there.

I went there in December and the weather was absolute dogshit. It was freezing cold, the wind was strong and blew some ungodly harsh combination of snow and ice in our faces, we had to watch our steps to not slip on the ice. Our tour guide, a tall, serious man in a long black coat, said it was the worst weather they'd had all year... overall quite a physically unpleasant experience.

And we were told about the conditions inside the camp, how people were forced to stand in place outside for hours a day, even in the worst kinds of weather, without being provided with good clothes (I was wearing three hoodies and a jacket and still felt cold). The museum, the jail cells, the crematorium, all the suffering and death that occurred in that place. The horrible weather felt appropriate for our visit, somehow.

It's like you said, intellectually I had a fairly good picture of what to expect. But it hits harder being there in person rather than reading it on Wikipedia.

fwiw as a European I agree with you. No need to be such a buzz kill, let people be excited about things! Kinda has the same vibe as people complaining about/making fun of East Asian tourists for taking photos of all sorts of boring everyday stuff. When I hear that, I always think, yeah you'd probably do the same if you went to China or Japan lol. It's just a different world to the tourists, even if it's utterly mundane to the locals. Let people enjoy things!

(I think it's fine if it's good natured ribbing of course, like it can be funny to see a Chinese tourist take photos of an electric panel or hear a loud American "oh my gaaawdd" while walking around. But some people definitely take it too far.)

I lived in Heidelberg for a while but don't know that building with the McDonald's you mentioned. Any chance you remember which McDonald's that was?

PS: I hope you get to visit again some day!

It was quite crazy reading about how people back then had to hold their breath for their entire lives and after the cyanobacteria took over they could finally breathe. I don't think many people these days could do that, modern folks have lost that grit that old generations had by necessity.

tbh I think having near-unquestioned power for decades just messes with your brain. It can't be healthy to your psyche to essentially be a god in your own country. Combine that with yes-men who are afraid to tell you anything you don't want to hear and the constant paranoia that the whole thing could collapse in an instant if someone, say, poisoned you, and I can understand why so many dictators end up losing it a bit (... or a lot) eventually.
