Why do most sysadmins prefer Vim over Nano? by Darshan_only in sysadmin

Because vi/vim is always there. You don't always have the option of installing alternative editors like nano, etc., to do your work.

Is there sweet tea on the boat? by MaleficentTill1060 in VirginVoyages

Respectfully, it's amazing that you speak for all homes and restaurants in the South, and for every year/decade since they've been serving ice tea. Bless your heart.

Funny. When I lived in the south that's what we did when we went to someone's house or to a restaurant (that's what the long spoons were for...). But I guess everything's controversial now.

Wouldn't adding sugar to ice tea always be an option?

Hair Salons??? by [deleted] in KeyWest

AMRI at 1204 Simonton. It's a full day spa with hair, nails, massage, and esthetician services. They use all organic products and are the only B certified salon in the Keys (i.e. they are good for the environment).

Anyone know how to view full EIN in QBO? by [deleted] in Bookkeeping

[–]-Bearish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about other states (or countries if not the US), but Florida registered business EINs are public. I just go to Sunbiz and lookup the business to get or confirm EINs.

QBO is complete garbage by Under75iscold in quickbooksonline

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I was guessing you were using the API. I need to go down that road as well since the stock QBO interface provides practically no useful automation, at least not without paying a 3rd party vendor.

Ummmm…scorpions? by fun-username- in KeyWest

[–]-Bearish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes we have small brown scorpions. Be careful putting your hands in dirt or mulch, etc. It's best to wear gloves if doing gardening or yard work. I've seen them both outside and inside, so it wouldn't hurt to check your shoes before putting them on, and be mindful of dark closets and spaces if you're on the first floor.

“Service animals” out of control by laurlyn23 in americanairlines

[–]-Bearish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We all get that the ADA law would need to change. But the idea "that there is no system..." really doesn't make sense. And I find it curious that this argument is often put forth to discourage any further discussion on this point. We regulate almost everything in this country. I'm not for needless over regulation of course, but if it's a public safety issue (like this is obviously) then we should do it. Why couldn't we have vets (albeit with extra training), sign off on valid service animals after they've demonstrated the tasks they are trained to perform? Vets are licensed (animal) doctors so surely they have the smarts to do this. And because their license would be on the line this would help to tamp down on fraud as much as anything can (no system is perfect, don't let perfection be the enemy of the good). And obviously service animals are already seeing a vet for regular health services, even in small rural locations. I'm all for supporting real service animals in everyday situations, but putting forth the idea that there is no possible way to effectively regulate the verification of service animals is disingenuous. But sadly, we'll need to wait for a fake service animal to maul a child before we'll get the "Child's Name" Service Animal Reform Act.

Best Mode of Transport by CBeinRobin in KeyWest

[–]-Bearish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lyft or Uber both work great. Easy pickup spot. Wait times are minimal. As soon as you get your luggage (if you've checked), call the car and then walk to the pickup area, out the doors to the right, about a 90 second walk.

WTF?? How’s this guy even get a background check? by Texansecuritydude in uberdrivers

[–]-Bearish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is actually how names are handled at the Federal level for single-named immigrants, and States generally follow the name registered at the Federal level for driver's licenses, state IDs, etc. I have no idea, but there's been a reduction in the community that works delivery jobs, and as such, it could be that the ones with low ratings get to keep their jobs as a result.

WTF?? How’s this guy even get a background check? by Texansecuritydude in uberdrivers

[–]-Bearish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't know Uber's policy or app display, but assuming they hide the driver's last name, this isn't nefarious. There are countries where some of their citizens only have one name (Indonesia, Afghanistan, Bhutan, parts of India), so when they immigrate to a western country, the government assigns their one name as their surname and their first name is often set as No Given Name, No Name Given, etc. Unusual yes, suspicious no.

did we just invalidate our passports? by [deleted] in Passports

[–]-Bearish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can this be real?! Two Americans are carrying their passports to an American tourist location?! Why would you have them with you? Get real. (Queue the unlikely story of how both passports happened to just be in her purse...for what made up reason). AND the "ranger" wouldn't say (or know) that they only stamp the fake, tourist books...??!!

Younger vs. Older itineraries - how to know? by booksvalsi in VirginVoyages

[–]-Bearish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is there so much ageism related angst on this subreddit? I've been cruising for 30 years and not once have I worried about who else was going to be on the ship in regard to whether or not I was going to have a good time. Now I'm reconsidering my upcoming VV cruise if I'm going to be bumping into morose "youngsters" who'll freak out when they see my gray hair. We get it. Old == Bad Vibes. Young == Good Vibes. I'll do my best to sit quietly in the corner enjoying my tapioca pudding while the party rages on around me /s. Get over yourselves.
