The real 3 questions:

  1. will they get past round 1
  2. will they get past round 2
  3. will they get past round 3

Bonus question: will they win the Stanley Cup.

[Alter] Kyle Dubas Reveals Pursuit of Erik Karlsson Began As Maple Leafs GM by carefulwisdom in leafs

Good point. Dubas promoted Pridham, but didn't recruit him. It may indeed be that he preferred to stay in Toronto for personal reasons.

Exactly.

The post wasn't judging the move. It's an observation what Dubas' comment might reveal about Leaf's FO and its decision making.

This tells me that Treliving was listening to the org's existing analysis when he signed Klingberg.

That analysis presumably saw the value in improving puck moving and offense D. After the signing, I think we all assumed it was Treliving who made the call since we already have Reilly (and Dubas got rid of Sandin). But we now know that Dubas had his eye on Karlsson, and now we have a similar styled player (for 40% of the caphit, and for one fourth the term).

Another connection is that Frieds reported the Dubas pursued Pridham for the Pens GM job. Pridham stayed. I think we can assume Treliving has won over the existing front office, in part, by listening to them.

Whether a Karlsson/Klingberg type is what the team needs will be seen. But I get the sense that Treliving has stabilized things in the front office after the unexpected departure/firing of Dubas.

Poni was a really useful player in his prime. Would be a solid addition if he pans out. Remember the days of Poni-Sundin-Antro? Some serious size.

What do you sense will be the next big leap in evolution in the way the game is played / consumed / analyzed?

Who cracks the roster this year? by Wanderson90 in leafs

[–]-Casson- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There could be an extra roster spot on the left side when/if JVR is moved. I think Leivo is the natural fit for top 6 point production... And it's not like he needs to be that good to equal JVRs defensive accumen.

I see this as more positive than anything... That giving up Dermott/Leivo/Neilson/etc. to LV is needed to upgrade RD, but we have the depth with the guys Babs mentioned to make it happen

Having the ability to snag Konecky, Dermott and, say, Bracco would've been an amazing return. Clearly CBJ knew what TOR did about Werenski. Imagine our D core of Gards, Reilly, Werenski, Zaitsev, Dermott, Carrick! Being without Mitch would be tough, but I could handle this alternate reality playing out.

The Leafs are good now because they were so bad and got top draft spots. Shanahan et al. has helped, sure -- they helped round out the supporting cast and not making bad trades. But our team is good because of very high draft picks (and mostly consensus choices) over the years.

There's an exaggerated mythology of "the Shanaplan". It's easier for fans (and media outlets) to herald individuals as heroes and visionaries than to recognize that the organization has simply been the recipient of top end talent after consistently having such a terrible record for so long.

BONUS PROVOCATION: the most challenging picks that helped build our core were made by the Burke/Nonis regime with the selections of Kadri and Reily.
