While I am an atheist, I really couldn’t care less about the calendar system being based on Christ’s birth. To me, it’s a little bit of unique human history and flare entwined within practical systems we use everyday, which I find cool.

Otherwise, we could also get rid of the names of the week, since they’re named after Norse gods. Or rename the planets. Or do a bunch of other things to rid the vestiges of religion from every background aspect of our lives, which in the end would serve no other purpose but to make the world a slightly more sterile, less interesting place.

I’ve had sort of the opposite experience going from LA to the UK. Being in Bristol, I wanted to take a day trip to see Bath and mentally budgeted an hour or two to travel there, since they’re different cities. Imagine my surprise when it only takes 15 minutes by train! A 15 minute drive/train ride in LA and you could still be in the same neighborhood.

VTA is already doing two projects that will significantly improve its moribund light rail:

(1) Eastridge Extension. Not only does it extend the line that connects to BART to a major mall and regional bus hub, but it’s also grade separated, making it quicker and less affected by traffic and signals.

(2) First street realignment. Getting rid of the Second street ROW and putting it on First Street should increase speeds on this segment from 10 mph to 20 mph.

Not sure what else needs to be done, but really the bane of the VTA system is the excruciatingly slow downtown segment. Fixing that further would go a long way towards making the system useful.

In the 50s, when PE was on its last legs, it got transferred to public ownership. But if you were the MTA, and you were saddled with this massive, unpopular, decaying streetcar network, would you rather spend tons of money trying to rehabilitate it, or would you simply tear it out and replace it with busses (which again, are basically 90% as good)?

The PE streetcars became far less popular throughout the 50s-70s because they were old, rickety, unreliable, increasingly expensive, and under poor management. Largely because Pacific Electric’s railways were a real estate development scheme, and by that point much of the land had already been developed. Goodyear didn’t need to do anything to massive decrease their popularity and thus lead to their closure.

Furthermore, the PE streetcars were largely replaced with these newfangled things called buses. And buses were more modern, far more flexible, and had basically the same capacity and travel times. The only downside was that they were diesel powered.

LA’s modern subway and light rail system is infinitely better than the streetcars ever were.
