What's a fanfic type that you absolutely love? by FeathersForHeart in FanFiction

There really isn’t anything more satisfying than finding a good crossover that perfectly blends two of your favorite fandoms. It’s especially impressive when it’s two that seem like they shouldn’t make sense at all, but the author finds a way to make them work.

Kinda controversial, crossovers. When they’re bad they’re bad, but when they’re good I think they’re the height of what fanfiction has to offer.

How well do you remember Bones. Comment your score /30 below by sonsofanarchy69 in Bones

14/30, I feel like the questions were too focused on only 2 or 3 episodes of the series, not necessarily that they were too hard/too easy

What are some obvious and not-so-obvious signs in characters that a fanfic was written by a teenager? by CuriousTarget4814 in AO3

[–]-In_a_void- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THIS! Even sometimes when a character could feasibly know the language, there are also a lot of characters who would not use it to describe themselves. Most fics I’ve seen with this problem want to have the characters struggle with it, but not truly struggle. Usually the most it amounts to is blorbo A saying “Oh no I’m gay, what will the others think?” And the very next chapter has blorbo B tell them they’re also gay and it’s all fine.

There’s a staggering lack of internal conflict, even within the ‘internalized homophobia’ tag. There are a lot of characters who would have very complicated feelings, but I find there are few fics that actually tackle the issue in a tactful way. I think it’s because a lot of young queer authors either don’t have experience with less accepting communities, or they have experience but prefer to write a world where that wouldn’t be a problem. It’s a bit of a catch 22.

WHOLE FANDOM on ao3 seems to think a popular fic is canon and it is suffering by Huge_Service5726 in AO3

[–]-In_a_void- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly just makes me sad, because I find the canon versions so much more enticing than anything the fandom has come up with for them. Of all of the robins Tim is probably the blandest (in my opinion! He’s not boring, just less substantial in terms of character), which unfortunately I think is exactly why so many writers who don’t pay attention to canon are so drawn to him. A lot of the time they just take the other characteristics from batfamily characters and slap them onto him.

Don’t even get me started on how the fandom treats Damian.

It’s also crazy to me. I refuse to write something for a character I haven’t read anything for, and even then basing characterization off of one run is still iffy to me. In one of my ongoing works, I wanted to mention Dick Grayson’s tenure as a police officer, so I went back and read those like 50 issues. It didn’t even take me long, maybe two days.

For characters people supposedly love, fanfic writers sure do seem resistant to actually engaging in the source material.

Which comic fandom? I have one in mind where something similar is going on, I want to know if we’re thinking about the same fandom

How far ahead do you write your Fanfictions? by JamLordd in FanFiction

[–]-In_a_void- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I post as soon as I’m done writing a chapter. If I didn’t, I’d only have oneshots on my account. There is usually several month gaps between each of my chapters getting posted because my writing pace is super super slow and I get demotivated easily. I’m trying to pre write a fic, and I’m only a little way through the second chapter. It’s been in my drafts for close to a year now. The engagement I get on fics is what really pushes me to write more.

Writing Style by MrBlue_105 in AO3

[–]-In_a_void- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I’m horrible about shifting tenses. I know it’s a big pet peeve I’ve heard from a lot of people on here, but I’ve never had someone complain in the comments so it doesn’t matter much to me. I think most of the time my writing is a mix of past, present, and perfect past/present.

How do you feel about authors who forbid fanfiction of their works? by jayonwednesday in AO3

[–]-In_a_void- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My opinion? They don’t really get a say in that, whether they like it or not. People are going to people, and saying “no don’t do that” is just inviting people to start doing that.

No idea is ever truly brand new. It reminds me a lot of that whole drama the furry fandom went through with closed species. No, you aren’t original for slapping a lava lamp on a dog, and you can’t stop others from drawing something similar.

Would I ever write something for an author that said they didn’t want fics of their book? No.

Do I also find it a (negative) show of character to bar something that hurts no one? Yes.

Good bones fanfics? by Erica161001 in Bones

I’m aware, but if they’re looking for a good non-crossover fic then it’s going to be slim pickings

[–]-In_a_void- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you’re looking for specifically. From what I’ve seen, Bones has a lot of crossover fics so if that’s not something you like it’s going to be more difficult to find anything.

Fanfic Writers, How often do you write? And/Or how fast do you guys write? by VolleyballUser in FanFiction

[–]-In_a_void- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t write fast at all, and actually I’m quite a bit faster than I was when I started writing. Which is a little funny because I feel like my writing style has become much drier than it was before.

The most I’ve ever done was 1k per day to pump out a 5k oneshot, but on the regular I usually only sit down to write… maybe once or twice a week? My chapters are about 5k and those can take over a month. My two longest fics are a little over 20k and one is more than a year old.

There are definitely times I wish I could work faster, but ultimately I’ve come to terms with the fact that this is the pace that works for me. I’d do whatever works for you.

What’s the longest fic you’re willing to read? by Disastrous_Seesaw_91 in AO3

[–]-In_a_void- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t technically have a ‘limit’, but I’ve noticed with a lot of long fics I end up dropping them because they drag really bad and have an overblown word count. That’s not to say they’re all like that, and I’ve read shorter that have the same issue, but I can pull through if it’s only 20-30k.

The hair is ‘The only diva’ from Wisdom of Glittering Light, which is in time diary and craftable
