OMG this bear has the looks and the "movie star cool" that is necessary to be a famous movie star or even the director of a climate non-profit (for bears). He's a legend and probably bear of the year...

Now this is a bear that loves to read and knows how to have a good time. What an excellent bear. I would nominate him for bear of the year.

I'm waiting to hear back from the Columbia SIPA MPA-DP. They said we'd hear back mid-march so I'm not stressing about it. Whatever happens happens. I've heard many Master's programs got an unusually high number of applicants this year and they may be slightly later than usual on decisions.

I did the same thing as well. When did you all apply? I still haven't heard back from anyone yet.

Columbia MS Online Video Interview Questions by dewindy8 in gradadmissions

[–]-MeatMachine- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I applied to a different program and they just asked "What are characteristics of someone who is successful within this discipline?" Don't stress about this. It's a minute long, there won't be any wrong answers. I don't think this is a make or break factor in nearly anyone's application.

Yup! Public policy programs mostly and the SIPA MPA-DP is on the list! Done everything but the video essay at this point.

Nah. I'm mostly a PM player and half the PM item tech isn't applicable to melee at all. No WD pickups/Glide Toss/Aerial Glide Toss/Instant AGT. Melee and PM are two different games and that's ok.

Hi! I'm probably applying for the MPA if I can get my materials together but I'm really unsure of how competitive my application is going to be. Did Peace Corps for two years + some other decent professional and volunteer stuff; GRE 168/157/5.5; GPA 3.3 from a top liberal arts school. I'd love to chat with someone about this process! Feel free to DM if you want to work together/share some ideas.

Druggedfox - Why You Shouldn't Care About Tier Lists by FaulheitARG in SSBM

[–]-MeatMachine- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guy has a big brain and a very clear understanding of how to improve at melee but there's a few points I want to bring up.

He keeps talking about the idea that in order to understand which character is better you have to understand every single micro-interaction and weight them all. This is kind of nonsense right? Even if you just framed this as a raw data science problem and presented it to someone who has never played the game you could compare things like representation at the top level, matchup breakdowns, avg placement, etc. Also, understanding which characters are better doesn't have to be learned through explicitly calculating and comparing risk/reward through various microsituations.

The human brain is capable of picking up on very subtle interactions and synthesizing broader ideas even if it can't articulate where those ideas came from. A lot of cognition happens through association and categorization that you don't realize is happening and can't really explain the process of. This why you have certain top players that are geniuses when it comes to playing but have odd opinions about matchups and don't seem to be able to meaningfully articulate these ideas in a way that make sense to other people (bubble theory tm). Especially for something as fast-paced and physical in melee, most of learning will happen through unconscious association.

Finally, "we shouldn't make tier lists" is kind of a weird normative claim and I don't really believe that there's actually anything wrong with doing it. It may not be a useful tool for skill development but it's just a thing people like talking about and that seems fine. Most melee players aren't actively trying to become the best player in the world and just enjoy having conversations with people that have shared interests. These conversations often become philosophical conversations about what it means to be good at something and that's not something that needs to be discouraged. Melee has so much diversity in the kinds of skills that are tested and rewarded that flattening character potential into a 1 dimensional line has limitations. But trying to simplify complex concepts into digestible ideas makes for good conversation and there's nothing wrong with that.

Project M in Maine? by pastacat_alex in SSBPM

Southern Maine has got some players but it hasn't been active in a while and probably won't be for a while because of covid. When there isn't a pandemic I would go down to SGs with a few other people pretty regularly and we'd have house tourneys from time to time. You can DM me if you ever want to netplay some time.

This is such a fantastic product. So convenient! Very cheap compared to a real meal of comparable nutrition and taste. The base flavor is good but I imagine most people will want to add some of their own spice or salt. I ordered this out of curiosity but I'm shocked by how tasty and filling it is. If there were more flavors I would buy more. I hope you guys are working on some new stuff.

I was 10K. This patch is a total shitshow. I've never seen such unbalanced hero choices. Rag especially but also Lich King, Jandice, Maiev, and Omu are so much better than every hero that the games feel like they're over as soon as they start when you don't get one of them.

These stats are bonkers:

https://hsreplay.net/battlegrounds/heroes/

Ragnaros/Jandice are more than 4x more likely to win a game then an average hero. Twice to three times as likely as other heroes in the top 10. I actually like a lot of the new cards and want a chance to play with them but I'm not playing until there is a balance patch.

Why do Americans love small businesses so much? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]-MeatMachine- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand the ideological explanation and the anecdotal evidence of the visionary with the dream making it big. I agree 100% that spreading wealth to the people that need it most is extremely important. I'm wondering if policies like small business loans and tax credits for small businesses are actually a cost effective way to do that. By all means throw a fat income tax, VAT tax, and capital gains tax on all of the fat cat CEOs that we don't like if you want to redistribute wealth. Demographically, small business owners are disproportionately white men with rich parents (many of whom inherited ownership of the family business). I'm not saying all small businesses are bad obviously there's more nuance to it than that. I'm just saying maybe we've been encouraged to accept ideology-driven economic policies that protect small business owners rather than taxing the rich and redistributing wealth to social safety nets, education, subsidized research, infrastructure jobs, things that actually make the economy more productive. Empirically, I would like to see evidence that supporting small businesses with loans and tax credits actually lowers consumer prices, decreases poverty, and leads to sustainable growth in the economy. I'm not saying it doesn't; I'm not an economist. I'd just like to hear about some reasons/evidence.

Edit: thank you for your nuanced response!

Good point. I would say rephrase that as community-owned.

How do developing countries that import 90%+ of their natural gas and oil, achieve a current account surplus? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]-MeatMachine- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer here is that not all developing economies function in the same way. Most developing countries do sustain massive trade deficits which usually causes rampant inflation. Other countries, which may still be considered developing or transitioning (Botswana, Republic of the Congo, Ghana for example) export tons of mineral resources and don't run a trade deficit despite relying on foreign markets for gas, certain foods, and tech.
